A tire-and-alignment owner up there phoned us last spring after buying a used two-post at an auction — no manual, no data plate he could read, and a rusted-out carriage he was about to trust with a 1968 Chevelle body he’d spent two winters on. That’s the moment specs stop being marketing copy and start being a safety issue. Why the Model Number Matters More Than the Sticker Price

Every reputable manufacturer builds its model numbers around capacity and configuration. A Rotary SPO12 is a 12,000 lb symmetric two-post; the SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric. A Challenger CL10V3 is a 10,000 lb clearfloor. Once you know how the naming works, you can read a used lift’s column in a scrapyard and know exactly what you’re looking at. That matters because the wrong model in the wrong bay isn’t just inconvenient — it’s the setup that drops a car. Symmetric arms on a modern crew-cab pickup put the doors into the columns. Asymmetric arms with an unbalanced restoration body can shift the center of gravity outside the designed envelope.

The Waterloo shop we mentioned had a lift stamped with a capacity his eyes couldn’t confirm, so we pulled the serial and cross-referenced it with the manufacturer. It came back as a 9,000 lb unit from the late 1990s — not the 12,000 lb machine the seller had promised. He’d been planning to put a dually on it. That single lookup was the difference between a normal Tuesday and an insurance claim. This is the first thing we do on any inspection: confirm the model, confirm the rated capacity, and confirm the lift has an ALI or ETL label. If we can’t verify what a lift is rated for, we treat it as unrated and tell the owner so in writing.

Capacity Math for Restoration and Metal Work

Restoration shops break the normal capacity rules because vehicles come in strange states. A stripped shell weighs almost nothing. A frame-on project with an engine, a full fuel tank, and a bed loaded with pulled parts can weigh far more than the curb weight you looked up. We tell Waterloo metal-work shops to size for the heaviest thing they’ll ever roll in, then add a margin — because the day you need the margin is the day someone drives in a 3/4-ton with a welder in the bed.

For most restoration work, a 10,000 lb two-post handles passenger cars, light trucks, and the odd panel van. Move up to 12,000 lb if you regularly see heavy-duty pickups, and 15,000 or 18,000 lb if you’re doing any medium-duty work. Capacity isn’t the whole story, though. Arm reach matters just as much: a long-wheelbase truck needs arms that extend far enough to reach the frame pinch points, and a low unibody sports car needs arms that drop low enough to slide under a rocker without scraping. We’ve had shops buy on capacity alone and then discover their arms wouldn’t reach the lift points on half their customer base. Ask about minimum pad height and maximum arm extension before you buy, not after. Those two numbers decide whether the equipment actually earns its floor space.

Ceiling Height, Column Height, and the Overhead vs. Clearfloor Choice

The single most common measuring mistake we see in Iowa is a shop owner who measures to the bottom of a truss instead of to the lowest obstruction. Sprinkler heads, conduit runs, garage door tracks, and lighting all count. An overhead two-post typically needs somewhere around 12 to 14 feet of usable clearance depending on the model; a clearfloor with a floor-mounted equalizer needs less overhead but puts a hose or cable channel across the bay floor.

Restoration shops usually lean clearfloor for one specific reason: you want to hoist a body off a frame, or run a chain fall from the ceiling, and an overhead beam sits right where you need airspace. Tire shops often prefer overhead because a clean floor means nothing to trip over when you’re rolling four wheels at a time. Neither answer is universally right — it depends on what happens in that bay all day. In a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls, which is a setup we quote constantly in northeast Iowa, clearfloor is almost always the call. We’ve measured plenty of pole buildings where the sidewall height looked generous on paper and the actual truss bottom came in under 11 feet at the lowest point. Measure before ordering, and measure at the exact spot the columns will stand.

Concrete: The Spec Nobody Prints on the Brochure

Manufacturers publish concrete requirements, and they are not suggestions. Most two-post models call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier-capacity units call for more — sometimes six inches or a poured footing pad. We’ve cored plenty of Iowa floors that looked fine and came back at three and a half inches over loose fill. Anchoring a 12,000 lb lift into that is asking a column to pull free under load.

Before we install in an autolift garage, we core-test or at minimum hammer-test the slab and check for cracks, control joints, and edge distance. Anchors need a specific distance from any joint or slab edge, and a column set too close to a saw cut will spall the concrete out over a few hundred cycles. If a floor doesn’t meet spec, the fix is usually cutting out a section and pouring a proper pad — a day of work and far cheaper than the alternative. We also check floor slope. A slab that drains toward a floor drain is normal in Iowa shops, but more than a modest pitch means the columns need shimming, and shim stacks over a certain thickness compromise the anchor loading. All of this is boring, and all of it is the reason a properly installed lift runs for twenty-five years while a rushed one develops problems in the first season.

Autolift Garage Safety Systems Worth Comparing Model to Model

When you compare two models side by side, look past capacity at the safety hardware. Mechanical lock ladders should engage positively at every position with an audible click, not a vague scrape. Single-point air release is a convenience feature that also reduces the chance of someone reaching under a raised load. Arm restraints — the gear-and-pawl kind — should lock the moment the lift leaves the ground and stay locked until it comes back down. Slack-cable and slack-chain safety devices should stop the carriage if the equalizer system loses tension.

On the used market, this is where the real differences show. We inspect lifts where the lock ladders have been ground down by a previous owner because they “clicked too loud,” or where the arm restraint gears are worn round and the arms swing freely under load. Those are not repairs — those are reasons to replace the component or the whole lift. Any autolift garage running commercial work should also be on an annual ALI-standard inspection schedule, and we do those across northeast Iowa including Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Waverly. It takes about an hour per lift, it documents your due diligence, and it catches worn cables and cracked welds while they’re still cheap. Comparing Four-Post and Scissor Options for Restoration Bays

Two-posts get the most attention, but they’re not always the right answer for restoration and metal work. A four-post gives you a drive-on platform, which is ideal for long-term storage of a project car and for anything with a compromised or partially removed frame. If you’ve got a body sitting on a rolling chassis with the suspension out, a two-post has nothing safe to grab. A four-post carries the whole thing on runways and doesn’t care.

The tradeoff is access. Runways block the underside of the rockers and the outer floor pans, which is exactly where rust repair happens on Iowa cars. Many restoration shops we work with run both: a two-post for suspension, brake, and driveline work, and a four-post for storage and long-term projects. Mid-rise scissor lifts fill a third role — they raise a car eighteen to forty inches for wheel work, sill repair, and body panel access without needing overhead clearance, and some models are portable enough to roll out of the way. A shop with limited square footage sometimes gets more done with a two-post and a mid-rise scissor than with two full-size lifts. How We Handle a Spec Comparison for Iowa Shops

When someone calls us about outfitting an autolift garage, we start with questions, not a quote. What’s the heaviest vehicle you’ll lift, and how often? What’s your lowest overhead obstruction, measured at the column locations? How old is the slab and do you know the pour thickness? What kind of work happens in that bay — tires, alignment, driveline, body? Do you need to store a vehicle long-term? Answers to those five things narrow the field from dozens of models down to two or three real candidates.
