He wanted to do his own maintenance, store one car up top and park another underneath, and he figured seven thousand pounds of capacity would cover anything he’d ever own. That’s about the most common autolift garage conversation we have, and the question underneath it is almost never “what does it cost?” It’s “what does it cost me over twenty years?” Those are wildly different numbers, and the cheap lift is frequently the expensive one. Here’s how the math actually shakes out when you own a lift for two decades instead of two years.

Year Zero: Purchase Price Is the Smallest Number
Most first-time buyers anchor hard on the sticker. It’s understandable — it’s the one number everybody publishes. But across twenty years of ownership, the purchase price typically accounts for well under half of what you’ll actually spend, and it’s the one cost you control most easily by simply buying right the first time.
For a home storage application, four-post lifts in the 8,000 to 9,000 lb range from BendPak or Atlas sit in the mid four figures for the lift itself. Two-post units at similar capacity often price a little lower because there’s less steel, but they demand better concrete and they’re not a storage solution — you can’t leave a car parked on a two-post for six months of Iowa winter. If storage is genuinely part of the plan, and for most home buyers it is, four-post is the category. Add a rolling jack bridge if you want to do wheels-off work, and drip trays if the top car leaks. Those accessories are the two things buyers skip at purchase and buy within eighteen months anyway, so budget them up front. Installation and the Costs Hiding in Your Building
Professional installation for a four-post typically runs a few hundred to around a thousand dollars depending on distance and complexity, and it’s money well spent — we’ve been called out to fix owner-installs where the runways were out of level by an inch and the cables had been routed over the wrong sheave. But the real variable is the building itself.
Concrete is the big one. Four-posts are more forgiving than two-posts because the load spreads across four columns and most freestanding four-posts don’t even require anchoring, but you still want a minimum of four inches of sound, level 3,000 PSI concrete. If your slab was poured thin, or it’s cracked, or the pole building floor was done in sections that don’t match, that’s a saw-and-pour job before anything gets set. Electrical is the other one: most home units run on a 220V single-phase circuit, and if your panel is on the far side of the house from the shop, running that circuit can cost as much as a set of accessories. Ceiling height determines whether you can stack two vehicles at all — twelve-foot sidewalls in a pole building generally work fine for a car over a car, but a truck over a truck needs more. Sort all of this before ordering. In an autolift garage project, surprises found after delivery are always more expensive than surprises found on the phone.
Years One Through Five: Almost Nothing
Here’s the good news. A properly installed four-post from a real manufacturer costs you almost nothing in the first five years. You’ll check and adjust equalization cables, keep the sheaves and locks clean and lightly lubricated, wipe down the runways, and check the hydraulic fluid level once a year. That’s a couple hours of your own time annually and maybe a gallon of hydraulic oil.
What does happen in this window is discovery. People find out whether they bought enough capacity and enough length. The southeast Iowa buyer who planned around seven thousand pounds and passenger cars is usually fine — but if a three-quarter-ton pickup lands in the driveway in year three, an 8,000 lb lift with short runways suddenly feels marginal. Capacity headroom is cheap at purchase and impossible to add later. Years Six Through Twelve: Cables, Seals, and the Parts Question
This is where the brand decision you made in year zero starts collecting. Equalization cables are the classic wear item — depending on cycle count and environment, expect to look hard at them somewhere in this window and possibly replace the set. Cable sets for common four-posts run in the low hundreds. Hydraulic cylinder seals may weep. A power unit motor or solenoid can fail. None of these are catastrophic on their own.
They become catastrophic when nobody stocks the part. We take calls constantly from people who bought an off-brand import lift from a marketplace listing, and eight years later the importer is gone, the cable lengths are non-standard, and the cylinder has a bore and rod combination nobody makes. At that point a perfectly sound steel structure becomes scrap because a four-hundred-dollar part doesn’t exist. That’s the single largest hidden cost in an autolift garage over twenty years, and it’s entirely avoidable by buying a brand with a real parts channel. Years Thirteen Through Twenty: The Long Tail
A well-maintained four-post in a heated or even unheated Iowa pole building will still be lifting cars at twenty years. We service units older than that regularly. In this stretch you’re looking at a second set of cables, likely a cylinder reseal or replacement, possibly a power unit swap, and cosmetic wear — surface rust on the runways, faded decals, worn ramp hinges. Total spend across those eight years, on a good lift with available parts, is generally comparable to one set of decent tires per year.
The alternative scenario is replacement. If you have to buy a second lift at year twelve because the first one is unsupportable, your twenty-year cost roughly doubles and you pay a second installation on top of it. That’s the real fork in the road, and it’s decided at purchase. There’s also a resale component people forget: a documented, well-maintained name-brand four-post holds value remarkably well in the used market. We’ve seen fifteen-year-old units change hands for a meaningful fraction of new. An unsupportable import is worth its scrap weight. Factor that residual into your comparison — it can swing the twenty-year picture by thousands.
Insurance, Safety, and the Costs You Hope You Never Pay
Nobody puts this on a spreadsheet, but it belongs there. A lift failure with a vehicle on it is a five-figure event at minimum and can be far worse. The safety systems that prevent it — mechanical lock ladders on all four columns, a slack-cable detection system, secondary locks on the rolling jack — are standard on quality equipment and sometimes token gestures on cheap equipment.
Talk to your homeowner’s insurance carrier before installation. Most carriers have no issue with a residential storage lift, but some want to know it’s there, and a few will ask whether it was professionally installed. Having an install invoice from a licensed installer in your file is worth having. Beyond insurance, build the daily habit: lower onto the mechanical locks every time, never trust hydraulics alone, keep the area under a stored vehicle clear, and do a real annual inspection. Putting the Twenty-Year Number Together
Rough it out honestly. Take the lift and accessories, add professional installation, add whatever your building needs in concrete and electrical, then add a realistic parts budget — figure two cable sets, one cylinder event, and one power unit event across two decades. Subtract a reasonable residual value at the end. When you run that on a quality four-post with real parts support, the annualized cost of owning a lift lands lower than most people’s cable bill, and dramatically lower than paying a shop for every oil change, brake job, and tire rotation over the same period.
Run the same math on the cheapest thing you can find shipped from an unknown importer and it usually comes out worse, because the replacement event lands squarely in the middle of the period. That’s the whole argument.
