A quick-lube franchise operator in the Davenport area asked us a fair question last year: he needed a second service bay capable of real repair work — CV axle and half-shaft replacement, mostly, since his techs were turning away drivetrain jobs — and he wanted to know whether he should buy a used lift off a dealer auction or a new one with a warranty. He’d found a fifteen-year-old two-post about ninety minutes away for a fraction of new-unit money. We drove over and looked at it with him. What we found, and the framework we used to decide, applies to just about anyone weighing used versus new for an autolift garage build. Here’s the honest version, numbers included.

Why CV Axle Work Changes the Lift You Need
Half-shaft and CV axle replacement is a wheels-free job. You need the suspension hanging, the wheel off, and clear access to the hub and the transaxle output. That rules out drive-on ramps and it rules out most pit-style setups. It also means a two-post is the natural fit for a quick-lube operator adding real repair capability — the tech stands under the car, the wheels dangle, and there’s nothing between him and the inner joint.
Capacity is not the constraint here; almost anything you’d service is under 6,000 pounds. What matters instead is arm geometry and floor clearance. Asymmetric arms let you rotate the car slightly and open the door for interior access, which matters when you’re pulling an axle nut and need to check for ABS sensor routing. Low-profile arm pads matter more than you’d think, because front-wheel-drive cars with plastic rockers and low pinch welds are exactly the vehicles you’re lifting. And unobstructed floor is non-negotiable — a baseplate model puts a crossbar right where your tech wants to roll a transmission jack or slide a drain pan. The Real Condition Checklist on a Used Lift
When we inspected that Davenport-area used unit, we worked a specific list. Columns: check for bowing, cracked welds at the base plate, and rust perforation at the bottom six inches where salt water pools. Carriages: look at the slide blocks and the wear on the inside of the column channel. Cables: inspect for broken strands, kinks, corrosion at the swage fittings, and whether the equalizer sheaves turn freely. Locks: cycle every notch and listen for all of them engaging with a clean click.
Then the hydraulics. Pull the cylinder covers if there are any and look for seep at the rod seal and at the hose fittings. Check the power unit reservoir for milky fluid, which means water intrusion. Run the lift to full height, hold it, and watch for drift — more than a half inch in ten minutes means the cylinder or the lowering valve is suspect. Finally, find the serial tag. If there’s no tag, you have no model number, no parts diagram, no ALI listing, and no way to buy the correct cable set. That unit had a legible tag, decent columns, and a cracked arm restraint gear on one arm. Repairable, but it moved the math. A used lift is only a deal if it’s a known model with parts you can still buy.
Cost Breakdown: The Used Path
Here’s what the used route actually cost on paper for that Davenport project. The lift itself was in the low four figures — genuinely cheap compared to new. Then the additions started. Removal and teardown at the seller’s site, because the columns had to be unbolted, the hydraulic lines drained, and the whole thing loaded: several hundred dollars plus equipment. Transport ninety miles on a trailer heavy enough for 1,800 pounds of steel: a few hundred more.
Then the refurbishment. A full cable set for a common two-post runs in the high hundreds. New arm restraint gears and pins, another couple hundred. A cylinder reseal or replacement, several hundred to over a thousand depending on the model. New anchors are mandatory — you never reuse anchors — and a fresh hydraulic hose set is cheap insurance. Then install labor, which is actually higher on a used lift than a new one because we’re troubleshooting as we go rather than following a factory manual on virgin parts. Add an ALI-standard inspection so you have documentation for your insurer. When we totaled it, the used path landed at roughly 55 to 65 percent of new-unit delivered-and-installed cost, with no warranty and an unknown remaining service life. That’s a real savings, but it’s not the 80 percent discount the sticker suggested. For an autolift garage that has to earn money every day, the gap narrows fast.
Cost Breakdown: The New Path
New pricing on a clearfloor 10,000 lb two-post from Rotary or Challenger sits in the mid-four to low-five figure range depending on arm configuration and options. Freight into the Quad Cities area runs a few hundred dollars, and because it’s a commercial address with a dock or a forklift, unloading is usually a non-issue. Install labor for a new unit on good concrete is in the four-figure range: set and plumb columns, drill and torque anchors to spec, route hydraulics, wire the power unit, bleed, cycle test, and verify lock engagement on every notch.
What you get for the difference is worth naming plainly. A factory warranty on structure and hydraulics, typically five years on structure and one to two on components. Current ALI Gold Label certification, which some commercial insurers now ask about directly. Full parts availability for the next twenty years. A known duty cycle, so the power unit isn’t already a decade into its life. And no diagnostic mystery on day one. For a franchise operation where a down bay costs real revenue per hour, the predictability is the product. When Used Genuinely Makes Sense for an Autolift Garage
We’re not anti-used. We buy, service, and relocate used lifts regularly. Used makes sense in three specific situations. First: a hobbyist or storage application where the lift sees a dozen cycles a month and downtime costs nothing but inconvenience. Second: when the unit is a current-production or recently-superseded model from a major brand with full parts support and you can inspect it in person under power. Third: when you’re getting it out of a shop that’s closing and the seller will let you cycle it, hold it loaded, and pull the covers before money changes hands.
Used stops making sense when it’s an unlisted import brand with no serial tag, when the columns show structural rust, when the cylinder is a proprietary design that’s no longer manufactured, or when it’s your only production bay. We’ve had customers spend more on rebuilding an orphan lift than a new comparable unit would have cost, and they still didn’t have a warranty at the end. The test we give people: if the lift went down for three weeks waiting on a part, would your business survive it comfortably? If yes, used is a reasonable bet. If no, buy new and sleep at night. That question sorts most autolift garage decisions faster than any spreadsheet.
Installation Details That Apply Either Way
Whichever way you go, the install requirements are identical. Minimum four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete cured 28 days, anchors set no closer than six inches to a joint or slab edge, and column base plates fully shimmed and level so the load path is straight down through the steel. In older Quad Cities commercial buildings we frequently find slabs that were poured in stages with control joints running right through the ideal column locations, which means either shifting the layout or cutting and pouring a reinforced pad.
Bay dimensions matter too. For comfortable CV axle work you want at least 12 feet of bay width so a tech can walk around the car with an axle in hand, and 24 feet of depth to allow drive-in and door clearance. Ceiling clearance should be 12 feet or better for a standard overhead unit; if you’re at 10 to 11 feet in an older building, a baseplate model works but reintroduces that floor crossbar we’d rather avoid for drivetrain work. Power is a dedicated 30-amp 208-230V single-phase circuit with a disconnect in sight, plus a clean quarter-inch shop air line for the safety locks. Get those four things right — concrete, clearance, layout, and utilities — and the lift will do its job for two decades regardless of whether it came in a crate or on a trailer.
