An overlanding builder in Davenport called us last spring about an automotive lift for home garage differential fluid work and general driveline service on his built 4Runner and his wife’s built Tacoma. He had been quoted by two other installers, neither of whom had actually come out to look at his pole barn shop, and both quotes were surprisingly different. He wanted an installer to actually visit the site before writing a proposal. We drove out that same week. This piece is the case study of that install, from site survey through the finished job, and what we found matters for anyone planning an overlanding home shop.

A Davenport Overlander Called Us About an Automotive Lift for Home Garage

The customer had built a 30-by-40 pole barn on his east Davenport property specifically to service his overlanding rigs. His 4Runner sits at about 5,200 pounds fully loaded with roof rack, drawers, and skid plates. His wife’s Tacoma is closer to 4,800 pounds fully kitted. Both trucks see regular differential fluid changes, transfer case service, front and rear diff seal work, and occasional axle service after backcountry trips. He wanted an automotive lift for home garage that would handle both trucks and give him room to work under them comfortably.

He also wanted to be honest about his skill level. He had done plenty of ground-level driveline work in the past but had never worked at height. He was not sure whether a two-post or a scissor lift was right for him, and he was not sure whether his ceiling would clear a two-post lift with a 4Runner fully raised. Those two questions drove the entire site survey. We showed up on a Wednesday morning with a measuring tape, a laser level, and a stack of layout templates.

The Site Survey: What We Looked at First

First thing we did was measure the sidewall height at four points along the pole barn. Consistent 12 feet 0 inches at the sidewall. Then we measured up the truss chord to the bottom of the horizontal purlin: 14 feet 4 inches. That was our working ceiling for a two-post lift install. Plenty of room for a 4Runner and even a rooftop tent on top of it if that ever came up. Two-post was clearly viable from a ceiling standpoint.

Second thing we looked at was drive-through depth. The pole barn was 40 feet deep and the customer wanted the lift roughly centered along the depth so he could park a second vehicle in front of and behind the lift. That gave him about 18 feet of drive-through clearance on each side, which is generous. Third thing we looked at was overhead obstructions: light fixtures, ductwork, air compressor lines. All easily relocatable. This is exactly the kind of site survey every automotive lift for home garage buyer should demand from an installer.

Concrete Slab: Depth, Age, and Rebar

The customer had poured the pole barn slab two years earlier as a fresh six-inch pour with rebar on 18-inch centers. That is above and beyond what a two-post lift requires. Standard four-inch residential concrete is the minimum spec for most two-post lifts, and six inches with rebar is what commercial installers dream about. We could anchor the lift columns directly into the existing slab with no reinforcement work needed. This alone shaved substantial cost off the install budget.

If his slab had been four inches without rebar, we could still have installed the two-post lift but with slightly closer attention to the anchor bolt placement and cure. If his slab had been three inches or of unknown age, we would have recommended saw-cutting the anchor pads and pouring reinforced concrete plugs. This is the single measurement most home-shop owners cannot answer confidently. If you do not know your slab depth, drill a small test hole in a corner or dig at the slab edge. Concrete depth drives cost on any automotive lift for home garage install.

Ceiling Height and Truss Layout

We also planned the exact column placement relative to the truss layout. Pole barn trusses in Iowa typically run on eight-foot centers, and the horizontal cross-purlins between the trusses are what would collide with a raised overhead lift bar if the lift column position were unlucky. We positioned the lift columns so the overhead crossbar sat centered between two trusses rather than under one, giving him full unobstructed reach with the crossbar in place.

Small planning details like this are what separate a good install from a mediocre one. A lift installed under a truss with a crossbar that catches the truss on every raise is a lift you will curse for 20 years. A lift installed with the crossbar centered between trusses gives you full unobstructed clearance forever. We spent about 30 minutes on the truss layout during the site survey. That 30 minutes will save the customer thousands of raise cycles worth of frustration on his automotive lift for home garage.

Electrical: 220V or 110V Options

Two-post lifts run either on 110-volt single-phase or 220-volt single-phase power. The 110-volt option is slower to raise and pulls more amps, but it works on standard household circuits. The 220-volt option raises faster and is easier on the motor over the long term. The customer already had a 220-volt circuit run to the pole barn for his welder, and he had capacity on the panel for a second 220 circuit dedicated to the lift.

We recommended the 220-volt option and pointed him at a local electrician for the dedicated circuit. Cost for the circuit run was a few hundred dollars, well spent for the smoother lift operation. If you are planning an automotive lift for home garage install and you do not have 220 power in your shop already, budget for the electrical work upfront. Retrofitting is more expensive than pulling the circuit during initial construction, and 110-volt operation is workable but noticeably slower on every cycle.

The Install Day: Six Hours Start to Finish

We came back on a Tuesday morning with the lift on the trailer. Two-man crew, standard tools, no crane required. Column one was set and anchored by 10 a.m. Column two was set and anchored by 11:30 a.m. Overhead bar and safety cables were run by 12:30 p.m. Hydraulics were plumbed and filled by 2 p.m. First raise cycle tests were complete by 3 p.m. Total time on site: six hours. That is a typical install time for an unremarkable two-post lift job.

What made it unremarkable was the site prep. Because the slab was ready, the electrical was ready, and the truss layout had been planned during the survey, install day had zero surprises. The lift was operational and the customer had lifted his 4Runner off the ground before we left the property. This is what a properly-planned automotive lift for home garage install looks like. Poorly-planned installs turn into two-day slogs with concrete work in the middle.

Differential Fluid Work on the Finished Setup

Two weeks after the install, we followed up with the customer. He had already done a full front and rear diff service on the 4Runner and a transfer case service on the Tacoma. He said the biggest surprise was how much easier the work was at working height compared to his old ground-level jack stand setup. The safety-cam ladder gave him three or four usable height positions and he settled on one that put the differential fill plug right at chest level. Working posture on that job dropped from awkward to comfortable.

He is now planning to service the diffs on friends’ overlanding rigs as favors. The lift has already earned back some of its cost in social capital alone.
