When an automotive lift hydraulic pump starts running slow, whirling, or bypassing under load, most shop owners assume the fix is as simple as swapping in a new pump and moving on. We hear that assumption a lot from EV specialty shops in northern Missouri that are running wheel bearing service bays hard, six days a week, on lifts that were never spec’d for the duty cycle they’re actually seeing. The truth is that a huge share of pump failures and “the new pump doesn’t work right” callbacks trace back to electrical mistakes made during installation or replacement, not the pump itself. We want to walk through the myths we hear most often so you don’t repeat them.

Myth 1: Any pump with the right horsepower will work

This is the single most expensive mistake we see. Horsepower alone doesn’t tell you whether a pump will actually run in your bay. Two pumps can both be rated 2hp and still be completely incompatible with your panel because one is wired for 220v single phase and the other expects three phase, or because the PSI rating doesn’t match your cylinder’s working pressure. We’ve had EV shops order a pump based on horsepower alone, wire it in, and find the lift raises at half speed or trips the breaker every time it’s asked to lift a loaded vehicle.

Before you buy an automotive lift hydraulic pump, pull the motor tag off the unit you’re replacing and get the exact motor number, not just the horsepower. On a lift like a BendPak HD-series 4-post, the pump is rated for a specific PSI, typically in the 2,000 to 2,400 psi range depending on the model, and that number has to match your cylinders or you’ll either underperform or overwork the seals. We match motor number to pump every time we quote a replacement, because horsepower alone gets shops the wrong part more often than any other single mistake.

Myth 2: Single phase and three phase are interchangeable with an adapter

We get this question constantly from shops that are converting an older bay or moving equipment into a new building. Three phase power gives you smoother startup and generally longer motor life, which is why a lot of higher-duty-cycle shops prefer it. But you cannot simply drop a three phase pump onto a single phase panel with a converter box and expect the automotive lift hydraulic pump to behave the same way it would on true three phase power. Rotary phase converters exist and can work, but they add cost, add a failure point, and in our experience are more trouble than they’re worth for a single-bay EV specialty shop.

If your building only has single phase service, which is common in older shop buildings across northern Missouri, order a single phase pump. Don’t try to make a three phase unit work with an adapter because you found it cheaper online. We’ve replaced more than one “deal” pump that fried within months because the phase conversion setup wasn’t sized correctly for the startup amperage the motor pulled every time it kicked on.

Myth 3: The pump doesn’t need a dedicated circuit

Wheel bearing service means the lift gets cycled up and down constantly through the day, sometimes a dozen times per vehicle when you’re checking torque, re-checking, and dropping it back to the ground for a test drive. That kind of duty cycle draws real amperage every time the motor starts, and if your automotive lift hydraulic pump is sharing a circuit with air compressors, welders, or shop lighting, you’re going to see voltage drop under load. Voltage drop makes the pump work harder to reach the same pressure, which shortens motor life and can trip breakers at the worst possible moment, usually with a vehicle in the air.

We tell every shop we quote a pump for: run a dedicated circuit sized to the motor’s nameplate amperage, with the correct breaker size and wire gauge for the distance from your panel. This is not optional if you’re running a shop with real volume. A pump wired on an undersized or shared circuit will nuisance-trip constantly and shops start blaming the pump when the real problem is the electrical supply feeding it.

Myth 4: A used pump is always a safe way to save money

We’re not against used pumps outright, but we are against buying one blind. If a pump’s flange sheared, like the whirling-and-racket failure we see constantly on older 4-post lifts, that failure mode often damages more than just the pump housing. If you buy a used automotive lift hydraulic pump without knowing why the original owner pulled it, you may be buying the exact same failure a second time. Ask for the failure history, not just the part number, before you commit.

New pumps for common commercial lifts are widely available and, for the labor cost of installing a pump twice, usually make more financial sense than a used unit of unknown history. If budget is the real constraint, we’d rather help you find a reconditioned pump with a documented rebuild than a random used unit pulled off a lift that failed for reasons nobody can explain.

Myth 5: All bypass and flow valve issues are pump problems

When a lift won’t hold elevation, or drops to the ground the moment the safety latch disengages, shops immediately assume the pump has failed internally. Sometimes that’s true. But a stuck lower valve, a bad flow control valve, or a failing bypass valve can produce symptoms that look identical to pump failure, and none of those require replacing the whole automotive lift hydraulic pump assembly. We’ve talked shop owners through diagnosing a stuck valve on the phone in ten minutes and saved them the cost of an unnecessary pump swap.

Before you order a replacement, check whether the reservoir has water contamination, whether the flow valve is sticking, and whether the noise is coming from the motor coupling flange rather than the pump body itself. The classic symptom of a sheared coupling flange is a whirling noise paired with slowing lift speed that eventually goes to nothing, which is a mechanical coupling problem, not necessarily an electrical or internal pump failure.

Myth 6: Duty cycle rating doesn’t matter for a small shop

EV specialty shops doing wheel bearing service often run lifts harder than a typical general repair bay because EVs are heavier and the service itself involves more up-and-down cycling per job. If your pump isn’t rated for a high enough duty cycle, you’re going to see premature motor burnout regardless of how clean your electrical circuit is. Some applications call for a 100% duty cycle motor specifically because the lift is expected to run continuously without rest periods, and standard intermittent-duty pumps simply aren’t built for that kind of load.

A shop cycling a lift dozens of times a day needs a different motor spec than a shop that lifts a car once and leaves it up for an hour. Myth 7: Installation is the same regardless of lift brand

Not every automotive lift hydraulic pump bolts on the same way. Reservoir capacity, mounting bracket position, and flow valve configuration vary by manufacturer and even by model year within the same brand. A pump pulled from a Rotary alignment lift is not a drop-in match for a BendPak 4-post, even if the motor specs look similar on paper. We’ve seen shops try to force-fit a mismatched pump assembly and end up with leaks at the reservoir seal or a flow valve that doesn’t bypass correctly when the lift is powered off.
