The European-marque specialty shop in the Des Moines metro that called us for an automotive storage lift install had one big worry: concrete. Their existing slab was fifteen years old, and the internet had convinced the owner he needed to tear it out and re-pour with rebar every eight inches. Not true. We are Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, and we install these lifts across Iowa on slabs that range from perfectly fine to genuinely marginal. Here is the myth-busting piece we walked him through, focused on the concrete myths that first-time buyers keep repeating to each other in online forums.

Myth one: you need a six-inch slab for any automotive storage lift

Not true for four-post storage lifts. The manufacturer actual specification is four inches minimum for most automotive storage lift models, with 3,000 psi mix. Six inches is the requirement for two-post lifts (where the load is concentrated at the base of two columns) and for heavy commercial four-posts rated over 12,000 lb. For a standard 8K or 9K home-garage or light-commercial four-post storage lift, four inches of properly cured concrete is enough. The load is distributed across four columns, each anchored with wedge anchors or drop-in anchors that transfer the load into the slab shear. If your existing slab measures four inches or more and passes the crack check, you are fine. Cutting a good slab and re-pouring is a waste of money that gets sold by contractors who do not know the actual spec. Ask your installer to point you to the manufacturer install manual and read the concrete section. If your installer cannot, that is a different problem.

Myth two: rebar is mandatory

Also not true. Rebar or wire mesh helps distribute load and prevent cracking, but it is not required by any major automotive storage lift manufacturer install spec. What is required is minimum thickness and minimum mix strength. Rebar is a good idea in a new pour, cheap insurance, but if your existing slab was poured without it and has not cracked in fifteen years, it is structurally fine for a storage lift. The concrete compressive strength does the work. Rebar mainly manages tension. Since the columns transfer load in compression through the anchor bolt to the concrete, tension is not the failure mode. What can crack a slab is thermal expansion at expansion joints, freeze-thaw cycles in unheated bays, and impact damage from dropped tools or vehicles. None of those are solved by adding rebar after the fact. If your slab is uncracked and the right thickness, do not let anyone talk you into ripping it up.

Myth three: any crack means you cannot install

Depends on the crack. Hairline cracks (less than one-sixteenth inch wide) running across a slab that is otherwise sound are fine. Nearly every fifteen-year-old slab has them, and they do not affect load transfer for an automotive storage lift. What actually disqualifies a slab is a crack running directly under a proposed column footprint, especially if it is wider than one-eighth inch or shows vertical displacement (one side lifted higher than the other). Those cracks indicate settling or heaving, and installing a column on top means the column can shift under load. The fix is not tearing up the whole slab. It is cutting out a four-by-four square around the affected footprint, removing that section, and pouring a fresh pad tied into the surrounding slab. That is a few hundred dollars of contractor work and a few days for the pour to cure. Then install proceeds normally. Full slab replacement is almost never the right answer for cracks.

Myth four: heated garages need thicker slabs

No. Heated garages actually make slab requirements easier, not harder, because the slab is not going through freeze-thaw cycles. The four-inch minimum applies whether the bay is heated or not. Unheated garages in Iowa winters do stress the slab more over time. You will see more surface crazing and more expansion-joint movement, but that is a durability question, not a load-rating question. For a European-marque shop that keeps the bay heated year-round (which is common for a paint or detail environment), the slab is easier on the equipment and lasts longer. What does matter in a heated bay is the vapor barrier under the slab. If the original pour skipped the vapor barrier, humidity can cycle through the concrete and cause surface deterioration over decades. Not a lift-install problem. A garage-flooring problem. If your automotive storage lift install reveals a moisture-damaged surface at the anchor-bolt hole, we clean it out and use anchors rated for wet-hole installations.

Myth five: you need engineering review for every install

Not usually. For a standard 8K or 9K four-post storage lift on a properly rated slab, no engineering review is required by any Iowa municipality we have encountered. The manufacturer install manual is the authoritative document. Where engineering review does apply: over 12,000 lb capacity, mezzanine or upper-floor installs, or any install where the slab original mix or thickness is unknown and cannot be tested. For a European-marque shop wondering if they need a stamped drawing before install, the answer is almost always no. The manual covers it. What you should do is pull a permit if your municipality requires one (Des Moines and most metro suburbs do not for a private shop equipment install, but check locally). Insurance carriers occasionally ask for install documentation, which is where the ALI cert on BendPak automotive storage lift models pays off. The cert plus the install manual satisfies most carriers without additional engineering.

The CV axle and half-shaft workflow, and why slab matters less than you think

For a European-marque shop, CV axle and half-shaft replacement is a routine job. VW, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes all see it at higher mileage. On a four-post automotive storage lift, the workflow is straightforward. Drive on, lift, position a bridge jack under the axle you are working on, unweight the wheel, pull the axle nut, and drop the axle. Slab thickness does not affect the workflow. The load path is the same whether the slab is four inches or six. What does affect the workflow is runway spread (wider gives better access to the inner CV joint), the presence of a bridge jack (essential), and lighting under the runways (LED strips make CV boot inspection dramatically faster). None of that is a concrete question. Slab is a go/no-go check for install. Once you are installed, it is not a productivity variable. Which is why the internet obsession with over-speccing concrete is misplaced. It fixes a non-problem while ignoring the productivity add-ons that actually pay back.

What we tell every buyer before the slab conversation ends

Three points. One: measure your slab. If it is four inches or more of 3,000 psi mix with no problematic cracks, you are fine. Do not spend money you do not need to spend. Two: pull the manufacturer install manual and read the concrete section. It is the authoritative source, and every reputable dealer will send it to you before you buy. Three: if you are pouring new, spec four and a half to five inches with wire mesh, and you will never worry about it.
