Myth One: ALI Gold Is a Brand Award
The first thing the Davenport shop owner assumed was that ALI Gold was a marketing tier — something a manufacturer buys the right to print. It is not. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program in which an independent lab tests a specific lift model against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard. The lab loads it, cycles it, checks the locks, reviews the manuals and the labels, and then the model is listed. The gold-colored label on the column means that exact model number passed and remains under a periodic audit program.
The critical detail people miss is that certification is per model and per configuration, not per brand. A manufacturer can have twelve certified models and three that are not certified at all. Buying a well-known name does not automatically get you a certified unit. Myth Four: EV Weight Is Just a Capacity Question
Electric vehicles are heavier than their gas equivalents, and everybody knows it. The instinct is to solve that with more capacity — buy a 12,000 or 15,000 pound unit and stop worrying. Capacity is part of it, but the harder issue is where the mass sits.
A skateboard battery pack puts a low, wide, centrally located slab of weight under the floorpan. That changes the center of gravity, changes the front-to-rear balance compared to a gas car of similar footprint, and it eliminates a lot of the underbody real estate you would normally use as a lift point. Manufacturers publish specific lift points for these vehicles, and they are not always where your muscle memory expects. Pad on the wrong spot and you can damage a pack enclosure or a structural sill in a way that costs more than the visit was worth. Adapters matter here too — many EVs need taller pucks or model-specific adapters to clear rocker cladding and reach the reinforced points. Wheel Bearing Service Is a Real-World Stress Test

You are applying serious torque at the hub, often with a slide hammer or a press kit, sometimes with a long breaker bar and your full body weight, on a vehicle that is up in the air. Anything loose in the arm restraints or the carriage shows up as movement, and movement while you are pulling on a hub is exactly what nobody wants.
On EVs it gets more demanding. The hubs carry more static load, the fasteners are frequently torqued higher, and rear motor assemblies can put drive components right where you want to swing a tool. We advise shops to set the vehicle at a height where you are working at chest level rather than overhead, to seat the lift firmly onto its mechanical locks before touching a fastener, and to confirm all four arm restraints have engaged. If a restraint pin is worn and skips a tooth under lateral load, the arm can walk. That is a five-dollar part causing a catastrophic outcome, and it is precisely what an annual inspection catches. What We Actually Check on an Inspection Visit
People ask what a real inspection involves, so here is the honest version. We start with the anchors: torque check on all bolts, visual on the slab around each footprint for cracking or spalling, and a look at whether shims have shifted. Then structure — column plumb, welds, carriage rollers, and any deformation in the arms. Cables and chains come next: we look for broken strands, corrosion, proper tension, and equalization between carriages. If the two sides do not rise together, something is wrong upstream.
Then the safety systems. Every lock position gets tested for engagement and release. Arm restraints get checked for full tooth engagement. The overhead shutoff or floorplate switch gets verified. We test the hydraulic circuit for creep by holding a loaded vehicle and watching for drift, and we inspect hoses and fittings for weeping. Finally, labels and manuals — a certified unit needs its operating instructions and warning decals legible and present, and replacements are inexpensive.
