What 12-foot sidewalls actually let you install

The lift height number that matters is not sidewall — it is clear ceiling height under the lowest obstruction. A 30-by-40 pole barn with 12-foot sidewalls typically has trusses that drop the clear ceiling to about 10-foot-6 at the center, sometimes less if there is a purlin run or a light fixture in the way. An overhead automotive two post lift wants at least 11-foot-6 of clear rise between the top of the shackle and the underside of the cross-tube. If your West Des Moines pole barn measures 10-foot-6 clear, an overhead 2-post will hit the truss on the way up. A floor-plate 2-post moves the cross-tube to the floor, which frees the ceiling and lets you lift full ride height in the same building.
