Every winter we get calls from farm shop owners around Iowa City who want automotive two post lifts in a pole building that already holds a combine head, a welding table, and a project truck under a tarp. The question is almost never “which brand” first — it’s “will this actually fit, and will it hold what I put on it?” We install and service this equipment across central and eastern Iowa, so we’ve walked a lot of gravel driveways and tapped a lot of slab edges with a hammer before anybody signed a purchase order. This article is the pre-purchase checklist we run through on the phone, and the biggest fork in that road is symmetric versus asymmetric arms.

Start With the Building, Not the Lift
A farm shop is a different animal than a commercial bay. Most of the pole buildings we work in around Johnson and Linn counties were poured for equipment traffic, not for lift anchors, and the two things rarely line up. Before we talk capacity or arm geometry, we want three numbers: usable ceiling height under the lowest obstruction, slab thickness, and door header height. A 12-foot sidewall sounds generous until you account for purlins, a hanging light, or a loft on one side — and a loft on one side with a wall on the other is one of the most common layouts we see in farm shops. That layout usually pushes the decision toward a baseplate model rather than an overhead crossbar.
Slab thickness is where people get surprised. Most manufacturers of automotive two post lifts want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and several of the 10,000 lb models want more than that with specific rebar or cure-time requirements. We’ve had callers tell us their concrete is “about five inches, maybe less” — that “maybe less” is the whole ballgame. Coring a small test hole costs almost nothing compared to pulling anchors out of a thin slab with a car in the air. If your pour won’t support the anchor spec, the fix is a cut-and-repour pad under each column footprint, and it’s better to budget that up front than discover it on install day. Measure first, shop second.
Symmetric Arms: What They Do Well
A symmetric lift places both columns directly across from each other, with all four arms roughly the same length, and the vehicle sits centered between the posts. That means the vehicle’s center of gravity lands close to the columns, which is exactly what you want when you’re lifting something long and heavy — a three-quarter-ton pickup, a dually, a service truck, a van with a utility body. Farm shops lift a lot of that. If the heaviest thing you’ll put in the air is a work truck rather than a sedan, symmetric geometry is usually the better structural match, and the arms will reach factory pickup points without gymnastics.
The tradeoff is door swing. Because the vehicle is centered, the columns sit near the middle of the doors, so getting in and out of a car on a symmetric lift is tight. For a farm shop that’s mostly trucks and tractors-adjacent work, that rarely matters — you’re not sitting in the driver’s seat while it’s up. But if half your work is climbing in and out of cars to start them, cycle a window, or read a dash code, that pinch adds up. We also point out that symmetric lifts tend to have simpler arm sets, which means fewer parts to inspect and fewer restraint gears to wear out over a twenty-year service life. On a farm where the lift gets used hard in bursts rather than continuously, simplicity has real value. Asymmetric Arms and Seasonal Storage
Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and pair short front arms with long rear arms. That shifts the vehicle rearward so the doors clear the posts. If your shop use case is a mix of cars, crossovers, and the occasional half-ton, asymmetric is the more pleasant lift to live with day to day. It’s the standard choice in most general repair bays for exactly that reason, and it’s why so many of the automotive two post lifts sold into home and hobby shops are asymmetric or true-adjustable designs.
Where farm shops need to be careful is long-term storage. A lot of the folks we talk to around Iowa City want to park a convertible or a restored pickup up in the air from October to April and use the floor underneath. Storing a vehicle for six months on an asymmetric lift is fine mechanically, but it magnifies loading mistakes: put a long-wheelbase truck on short front arms and you’ve moved weight away from the columns in a way the geometry wasn’t drawn for. Honestly, if seasonal storage is the primary job and daily service is secondary, we’d steer you toward a four-post lift instead — drive on, park, done, no arm loading to second-guess. Capacity: Be Honest About the Heaviest Vehicle
We ask everybody the same question: what is the single heaviest thing you will ever put on this? Not the average — the maximum. A caller in northern Missouri told us his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 pounds, and a 9,000 or 10,000 lb lift covered him with room to spare. A grain hauler’s farm shop with a one-ton flatbed and a dump insert is a different conversation, and 12,000 to 15,000 lb capacity starts making sense. In shops that run mixed fleets, we’ve installed 14,000 lb units simply because the owner didn’t want to think about it again.
Capacity isn’t just a sticker. It changes column height, arm length, pad reach, motor size, and anchor spec, and it changes price tier significantly. Jumping from 10,000 to 14,000 pounds typically moves you up a tier or two and may require a taller ceiling for a clearfloor overhead model. It also affects adapter needs — heavier trucks with frame-only pickup points want truck adapters and often stackable pads, which is an add-on cost people forget. And be realistic about frequency: a lift rated at 10,000 pounds used at 9,800 every week wears differently than one loaded to 6,000. Buy one tier of headroom above your real maximum and the equipment will outlast the building it sits in. That’s not upselling — it’s the cheapest insurance on the list.
Clearfloor vs. Baseplate in a Pole Building
Clearfloor models put the equalizer cables and hydraulic hose in an overhead beam, which leaves the floor totally open — great for rolling toolboxes, floor jacks, and sweeping. The catch is the beam needs vertical room, usually 12 feet or more of true clear height depending on capacity and column height. A pole building with 12-foot sidewalls often has trusses, wiring, or a hanging heater eating into that number. Measure to the lowest thing over the lift footprint, not to the peak.
Baseplate models route everything through a plate across the floor, so the total height requirement drops considerably. We’ve fit baseplate units in buildings with a 139-inch maximum height where a clearfloor model was simply impossible. The tradeoff is that floor plate — you’ll roll a jack over it, and in a farm shop with dirt, chaff, and gravel tracked in, that plate becomes a spot you clean around. Some owners hate it and some never think about it again. What matters more is that baseplate designs put the crossover hardware where you can see and inspect it, which we consider a small maintenance advantage. Either way, the anchor requirements don’t change: the columns still need full-thickness concrete under every base plate. Among the automotive two post lifts we install in rural Iowa, baseplate models are probably 40 percent of the total, almost entirely because of ceiling limits.
Power, Concrete, and the Install Realities
Most single-phase 10,000 lb units run on 208–230V, and a lot of farm shops already have that for a welder or a compressor — but they don’t always have it near the lift location, and running a dedicated circuit with a disconnect is a real line item. Three-phase is more common in commercial shops than farm buildings. We’d rather know about your panel before the truck shows up than have a crew standing around while an electrician gets scheduled.
Then there’s getting the columns upright. Two-post columns are heavy and awkward, and a lot of farm shop owners already have the right tool for this — a skid loader or a forklift. That helps a great deal, and we’ve done plenty of installs where the customer’s own machine did the lifting. Some customers tell us up front they don’t want install at all, and that’s fine; we sell the equipment and support you through it, and we’d rather you call with a question mid-assembly than guess. What we won’t do is skip the anchor torque spec or the initial safety-lock cycling test. The Checklist We’d Hand You Before You Buy
Here’s the short version we’d read to you on the phone. One: heaviest vehicle weight, then add a tier. Two: clear ceiling height measured to the lowest obstruction over the bay. Three: slab thickness and age, cored if you’re unsure. Four: door header height, so you can actually drive under a raised vehicle if you need to. Five: what percentage of your work is cars versus trucks — that’s your symmetric-versus-asymmetric answer. Six: available voltage and distance to the panel. Seven: whether you plan to store a vehicle up in the air for months at a time.
Answer those seven and the shopping gets easy, because the field of automotive two post lifts that actually fit your building is usually two or three models, not twenty.
