Why Oil Pan Work Drove the Whole Spec
Most people shop capacity first. This customer shopped access first, and he was right to. An oil pan gasket on a modern transverse four-cylinder is a job where you’re under the vehicle for two to four hours with a torque wrench, a scraper, and a very specific tightening sequence, and you need the pan at a height where your shoulders aren’t loaded the entire time. On jack stands in a driveway, that’s roughly eighteen inches of working clearance and a lot of ibuprofen. On a properly specced two post, it’s six feet, standing upright, with a droplight where you want it.
That requirement pointed us at a clearfloor design with a genuinely clear floor — no crossbeam at ankle level, because an oil drain pan and a transmission jack both need to roll freely under the vehicle. It also pointed at arm geometry: he wanted the front arms out of the way of the crossmember and subframe bolts he’d be reaching, so we specced asymmetric with three-stage telescoping front arms and low-profile pad adapters. And it set the capacity floor at a modest number, because his book is passenger cars, minivans, and half-ton pickups. Ten thousand pounds was plenty. The Ceiling Problem We Found on the Site Visit
We drove over with a tape measure before quoting anything, which is a thing we do for every Iowa install and which saved this project. The door track and the opened door panel sat at about eleven feet, and a gas unit heater hung down to nine feet six inches directly over where he wanted the lift.
Two options. Move the heater, which meant a licensed gas fitter, a permit, and a two-week delay. Or go baseplate, run the hydraulics and equalization cable through a low floor channel, and put the lift where the ceiling was open. He chose the heater relocation, and here’s why we agreed: baseplate designs put a channel across the floor exactly where an oil drain pan and a creeper want to travel, and his entire business model was fluid work. A three-inch hump in the middle of the bay would have annoyed him every day for a decade. Two weeks and a gas fitter’s invoice was the cheaper long-term answer. How Freight Actually Works, and Where It Bites
Here’s the part that surprises nearly everyone buying equipment online. A two post lift ships as two or three crated pieces on an LTL freight pallet, typically 1,700 to 2,400 pounds depending on capacity. That weight is above what a standard truck liftgate is rated for, so the carrier is not going to set it gently on your driveway. In freight terms, you’re getting dock-to-dock or a curbside drop where the unloading is entirely your problem.
If you don’t have a loading dock — and a rented single-bay shop in Ames does not — you have three choices. You go to the terminal with a trailer and a forklift and pick it up yourself. You rent a forklift with at least 3,000 pounds of capacity for a half day and coordinate its arrival within the carrier’s delivery window, which is usually a four-hour range they will not narrow. Or you buy from someone local who delivers on their own truck with their own equipment. Our customer initially planned option two, and the rental yard’s four-hour window did not overlap the carrier’s four-hour window. That’s when he called us back. Unloading Day: What We Brought and What We Watched For
We delivered on our own truck with a forklift already on the trailer, which turns a logistical headache into a ninety-minute job. But even with the right equipment, there’s technique involved and a few ways to damage a brand-new column before it ever gets bolted down. Columns ship lying flat and strapped to a skid, and the natural instinct is to fork them from the side and lift. Do that at the wrong point and you bend a sheet-metal cover or crush the top plate where the overhead crossbeam mounts.
We fork under the skid at the marked points, keep the load low and level, and carry it inside before anybody cuts a strap. Then we unpack in sequence: hardware and small parts box first so it doesn’t get lost under packaging, then the carriages and arms, then the columns last. Any freight damage — a crushed corner, a scraped column, a gouged cylinder — gets photographed and noted on the delivery receipt before we sign, because once that paperwork is signed clean, the claim is dead. In this case one arm had a scuffed powder coat from shipping and nothing structural, so we noted it and moved on. Concrete: Core Drilling a Rented Slab
Anchoring into somebody else’s floor adds a step, because you need the landlord’s blessing in writing before you drill twenty holes in their slab. We got that first. Then we checked the concrete itself, because a 1990s light-industrial pour in central Iowa could be anything from four inches with fiber mesh to eight inches with rebar on twelve-inch centers.
The test is straightforward: drill a half-inch pilot at each proposed anchor location, drop a bent wire in, and measure. We want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at every single anchor, not an average across the bay. We also want the anchor pattern to sit at least six inches clear of any control joint, expansion joint, or slab edge, because an anchor set near a joint can spall the concrete out sideways under load. This slab came in at six inches with visible aggregate and no joints in the footprint, which is about as good as it gets in a building that age. Where a slab comes up short, the remedy is saw-cutting a four-by-four-foot section at each column, digging down eight to twelve inches, and pouring new footings with a full 28-day cure. We’ve done that on plenty of jobs and it’s not exotic work, but it adds three to four weeks to the timeline. Plan for the possibility rather than discovering it on install day. Setting the Columns and the Load Test That Matters
With the slab verified, the install itself is a half-day. We chalk the footprint from the manufacturer’s template, verify the drive-through width against his widest expected vehicle, drill with a rotary hammer, blow the holes clean, and set the anchors to the exact torque in the manual with a calibrated wrench — not by feel, not by impact gun. Then we shim and plumb each column, because plumb is the single biggest determinant of how long the carriage slide blocks last.
Next comes the overhead crossbeam, the hydraulic lines, the power unit wiring, and the equalization cables. Cable tension is where we spend the most time and where most DIY installs get sloppy. Both carriages need to arrive at full height within about a quarter inch of one another, and getting there means cycling the lift empty several times, re-checking, and adjusting. Then we bleed the hydraulics, verify every lock engages and releases audibly at every position, and load-test with an actual vehicle — up, down, held at height, locks set, arm restraints checked. The customer’s own daily driver did the honors. He signed a documented test record, which is the piece of paper his liability carrier eventually asked to see. This is the difference between properly installed automotive two post lifts and equipment that merely stands upright.
What It Cost Him, and What He’d Do Differently
All in, this project landed in the mid-to-upper single-digit thousands for the equipment and installation, plus the gas fitter for the heater relocation and a few hundred in lighting and an air drop. Compared to the online price he’d first found, the delta was real, but nearly all of it was work that had to happen regardless — freight, forklift time, anchoring labor, and a load test. Buying local didn’t add cost so much as make it visible up front.
Asked what he’d change, he said two things. First, he’d have measured the ceiling to the lowest obstruction before he ever started shopping, because that one number would have narrowed his options in an afternoon instead of three weeks. Second, he’d have gone twelve thousand pounds instead of ten. Not because he needed it for the oil pan gasket and brake work that fills his schedule, but because in the eight months since, he’s turned away two three-quarter-ton diesels that would have been good money. Going up a capacity tier would have added maybe fifteen percent. That’s the most common regret we hear about automotive two post lifts, and it’s cheap to avoid on the front end and expensive to fix afterward.
