Automotive two post lifts get bought for a hundred different reasons, but the one we hear most often from RV and trailer service shops is depressingly simple: somebody is tired of crawling under a chassis on a creeper to pull a drain plug. That was exactly the situation at a trailer and RV service outfit near Sioux City that called us a couple of springs ago. They had two bays, a floor jack, four jack stands, and a fluid service schedule that was eating their labor hours alive. What follows is the honest version of their first year of ownership — the used-versus-new argument they had with themselves, the install, and what the first real service call looked like twelve months later.

Why a fluid-service shop wanted columns instead of a drive-on

The first conversation was about whether they needed a two-post at all. Their work is oil changes, transmission and differential service, brake fluid flushes, and the occasional grease-fitting marathon on trailer axles. A four-post drive-on is easier to load and easier to store a vehicle on, and it never requires you to think about arm placement. But everything they touch on a fluid service is on the underside centerline, and runways get in the way of nothing except exactly the spots you need. Wheels-free access matters when you are pulling a skid plate to reach a filter.

So the shortlist narrowed to a 10,000 lb asymmetric clearfloor or a 12,000 lb symmetric, both with a low-profile arm set for the light-duty tow vehicles they see between RV jobs. We also talked about height. Their building had roughly 12 ft to the bottom of the joists, which is workable for a clearfloor overhead in the 10K class but tight if you want to raise a tall crew cab all the way up. That single measurement drove more of the decision than the price did, which is normally how it goes with automotive two post lifts. Ceiling and slab first, capacity second, features third.

The used vs new argument, laid out honestly

We sell both, and we service both, so we have no religion here. The used case is real: a well-maintained Rotary SPO10 or a Challenger clearfloor with intact columns and good carriage slide blocks can serve a small shop for another decade and cost roughly half of new. Structural steel does not wear out on a schedule. Cylinders can be resealed, cables can be replaced, and the power unit is a bolt-on commodity item. If you have the cash flow of a two-bay shop and a spare weekend, used is a legitimate answer.

The used case falls apart in three specific places. First, unknown history — if nobody can tell you whether the columns were ever anchored to a proper slab or whether the unit was dropped during a prior teardown, you are buying a mystery. Second, parts orphaning: certain discontinued imports have no carriage, no arm pins, and no lock dogs available anywhere, which turns a cheap purchase into scrap. Third, certification and insurance. Some shops need an ALI-certified label on the column to satisfy an inspector or a fleet contract, and you cannot retroactively certify a used machine. The Sioux City shop weighed all three and went new, mostly because their trailer contract work involved a customer audit. Among automotive two post lifts in the 10K range, that certification detail decides more purchases than anyone admits.

Reading the slab before anyone signs anything

We ask about concrete on every single quote, and we get vague answers most of the time. “Probably four inches, maybe five” is the standard response. That guess matters, because a 10,000 lb two-post concentrates enormous load into a small anchor pattern, and the manufacturer spec is not a suggestion. Typical requirements land around 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI minimum concrete, cured, with a defined distance from any expansion joint or slab edge. A column sitting three inches from a saw cut is a column that will eventually loosen its anchors.

At the Sioux City building we cored a test sample in one bay and hit 4.5 inches of decent, well-cured pour with no rebar we could see — adequate for the 10K clearfloor they wanted. In another bay, the pour had been done later and was thinner, so we simply told them which bay to use. That is a cheaper conversation than the alternative. When a slab genuinely does not measure up, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad under each column, usually a two-day job with a concrete sub. We have also had customers with heated floors where coring is off the table entirely, and in those cases the honest recommendation is a four-post or a mobile column set rather than gambling on anchors. Slab reality dictates which automotive two post lifts are even on the table.

Install day and the first week of learning curve

Install on a clearfloor two-post is roughly a one-day job for a two-person crew when the site is ready and the electrical is stubbed in. Columns get set and squared, the overhead beam and hydraulic lines go up, anchors get torqued to spec, the power unit gets wired and bled, and then the lift gets cycled through its full travel repeatedly to purge air and prove the lock dogs engage evenly on both sides. We finish with an equalization check — cables adjusted so both carriages arrive at the same height and the safeties click in unison.

The learning curve for a fluid-service crew is mostly about arm geometry. Their techs had spent years lifting from wherever the floor jack fit, and a two-post punishes sloppy pad placement with a vehicle that feels tail-heavy. We walked them through factory lift-point diagrams, showed them how the asymmetric arm swing lets you open a door without hitting the column, and made them practice the up-to-the-first-lock-and-shake routine on three different tow vehicles before touching a customer’s truck. Within a week their fluid-service time per unit dropped noticeably, mostly because a tech standing upright with a drain pan at chest height simply works faster than one lying on a creeper. That efficiency gain is the actual return on automotive two post lifts, not any single line item on the invoice.

What oil and fluid service actually demands from the equipment

High-cycle fluid work is harder on a lift than most people expect. A restoration shop might raise a car twice a month and leave it up for weeks. A fluid-service bay raises and lowers fifteen or twenty times a day, which means cylinders, cables, sheaves, and lock mechanisms accumulate cycles fast. That is why we push cycle count, not calendar age, as the maintenance trigger for high-volume shops.

Practical implications: keep the columns clean because oil-soaked grime on the inside of a column turns slide blocks into sandpaper; grease the sheaves and check cable tension on a real schedule; and watch your fluid reservoir level, because a slow cylinder seep shows up as a lift that drifts down overnight long before it shows up as a puddle. We also recommend an oil-resistant containment habit — a drip tray under the drain point rather than letting used oil run across the arm and into the carriage. On the electrical side, a dedicated circuit prevents the nuisance breaker trips that plague shops running a compressor and a lift power unit off the same feed. None of this is exotic. It is the difference between a machine that hits fifteen years and one that starts acting strange in year four.

The first service call, twelve months in

We came back to that Sioux City shop right around the one-year mark. Findings were unremarkable, which is the goal. Anchor torque had relaxed slightly on one column — normal, and exactly why the annual re-torque exists. Cable equalization had drifted about a quarter inch, so we adjusted it. The lock dogs were clean and engaging crisply. Arm pad rubber showed wear on two of four pads from constant reuse of the same lift points on a fleet of near-identical tow vehicles, so we swapped those out.

The one genuine issue was the power unit reservoir sitting low, which traced back to a weeping fitting rather than a cylinder seal. Ten-dollar fix, five-minute job, and a problem that would have become an expensive one if it had gone another year. We also did the ANSI/ALI-recommended annual inspection paperwork so their audit file stayed clean. Total cost of that visit was a fraction of one bay-day of lost revenue. That is the part shops underestimate when they compare automotive two post lifts on purchase price alone: the ownership cost curve is flat and cheap if you inspect annually, and it spikes hard if you wait until something feels wrong. How we would tell a Sioux City shop to decide today

Start with three measurements before you look at a single product page: ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and age, and the wheelbase plus curb weight of the heaviest vehicle you actually service. Those three numbers eliminate most of the catalog instantly and save you from falling in love with a machine that will not fit. Then decide clearfloor versus baseplate. If your ceiling is under about 11 ft or you have a garage door track in the way, baseplate is the answer and there is nothing second-rate about it.

On used versus new: buy used if the unit is a mainstream brand with available parts, you can inspect the columns and carriages in person, and you do not need a certification label. Buy new if you have contract or insurance requirements, if downtime costs you real money, or if the used options in front of you are orphan imports. Either way, budget separately for install, anchors, and possibly electrical — those are not optional line items.
