When a collector in Urbandale called us about automotive two post lifts for his six-car garage, the first question out of his mouth was not about capacity or arm reach. It was about the electrical panel. He had four project cars in various states of disassembly, a fifth he actually drove, and a growing pile of coilovers and control arms he could not install because he was tired of working on jack stands. He also had a 100-amp subpanel that a previous owner had run to the detached building, and he wanted to know whether it would carry a lift. That question turned into a year-long project we followed from the first site visit through his first annual service, and it is worth walking through in full.

Why a Collector Wanted a Two-Post Instead of a Four-Post

The obvious choice for someone storing vehicles is a four-post with a rolling jack. Drive on, park, stack a second car underneath. We suggested exactly that at first, and he pushed back for a good reason: the bulk of his shop time is suspension work. Coilover swaps, bushing replacement, spring perch modifications, shock dyno testing on a friend’s setup. All of that wants the wheels hanging free and the underside completely open. A four-post holds the car by the tires, which is precisely the wrong thing when you are pulling struts.

He ended up doing both, but the two-post went in first because it was the one that unblocked actual work. Storage could wait; the pile of parts could not. This comes up constantly with hobbyists — the storage lift is the fun purchase and the two-post is the useful one. If your garage time is mostly wrenching rather than parking, automotive two post lifts win on access every single time. You can walk the full length of the car, swing a spring compressor without hitting a runway, and get a transmission jack underneath without navigating around a frame rail. The tradeoff is that you cannot leave a car parked on it indefinitely and reclaim the floor space, and you need a slab that will take anchors.

Reading the Electrical Requirements Before You Order

Here is where most home installs go sideways. Nearly every two-post power unit ships wired for one voltage and one phase, and swapping it later is not always trivial. The common configurations are 208-230V single phase, 208-230V three phase, and 460V three phase. Residential garages in Urbandale and the rest of the Des Moines metro are single phase, full stop. Three phase does not exist on a residential service, and no amount of wishing changes that. If you buy a used commercial unit off an auction site with a three-phase motor, you are buying a phase converter too.

Most single-phase power units on automotive two post lifts draw somewhere in the 20 to 30 amp range at startup on a 230V circuit, and manufacturers typically call for a dedicated 30-amp circuit with appropriately sized conductors for the run length. That last part gets ignored. A 30-amp circuit run 90 feet out to a detached garage on undersized wire will sag under load, the motor will run hot, and you will be replacing a starter or a motor inside two years. We told our collector to have an electrician size the feeder for voltage drop over the actual distance, not just for the amperage on the nameplate. He upsized a wire gauge and never had an issue.

Single Phase vs Three Phase and When It Matters

People ask whether three phase is worth chasing. In a commercial building that already has it, absolutely — three-phase motors run cooler, start smoother, draw less current per leg, and generally last longer. In a home shop, it is not worth the cost of a rotary phase converter unless you have other three-phase machinery already. The single-phase power units we install perform fine. A 10,000 lb capacity unit will take a car to full height in roughly 45 to 60 seconds either way.

What does matter is voltage stability. If your garage sits at the end of a long feeder and you are seeing 205 volts under load instead of 230, the motor works harder for the same output. We have diagnosed “slow lift” complaints that turned out to be nothing but voltage sag from an overloaded subpanel with a welder and an air compressor on it. Before spec’ing automotive two post lifts for any building, we ask what else runs on that panel and whether anything else will be operating at the same time. A hobbyist who runs a 60-gallon compressor, a MIG welder, and a lift off the same 100-amp subpanel needs a load calculation, not a guess. Our collector’s electrician ran that calc and found he had headroom — barely — as long as he was not welding while the lift was in motion.

Slab, Ceiling, and the Layout Nobody Measures Twice

His garage was newer construction with a documented six-inch slab, which made anchoring straightforward. That is the exception more than the rule. Plenty of Iowa garages built in the 80s and 90s went in at four inches with no reinforcement and a vapor barrier that makes core testing awkward. If you do not know your slab thickness, find out before you order. We would rather core-test and tell you that you need footings than watch a column tilt eighteen months later.

Ceiling was tighter. He had roughly eleven feet of clear height to the truss bottom, which is enough for a clearfloor overhead unit with most passenger cars but leaves you managing the shutoff bar carefully on anything tall. We went clearfloor because a smooth uninterrupted floor matters enormously when you are rolling a transmission jack or a spring compressor cart from one side of the vehicle to the other. Baseplate models save vertical space and are the right call in a garage with an eight-and-a-half or nine-foot ceiling, but you are stepping over a floor plate forever. Doing Suspension Work Right on a Two-Post

Once it was in, the workflow changed completely. Pulling a set of front struts that used to be a full Saturday became a two-hour job. The wheels hang free, the strut tower is at chest height if you set the lift correctly, and you are not crawling. But suspension work does introduce a specific risk on automotive two post lifts that owners need to understand: you are removing weight from one end of the vehicle while it sits on four contact pads.

Pull both front subframe components, an engine cradle, or a heavy differential and the center of gravity moves. A car that was balanced when you raised it may not be balanced after you take four hundred pounds off the nose. We drill this into every owner at handover — set the vehicle on the pickup points with the balance point roughly between the columns, use the manufacturer’s lift point diagram rather than eyeballing a pinch weld, and if you are removing serious weight from one end, support it with a jack stand rated for the load before you start unbolting. Our collector added a set of tall stands specifically for this and used them on every drivetrain job after the first time a car got noticeably nose-light on him. It is a five-minute habit that prevents the one incident nobody recovers from.

The First Year of Maintenance

Twelve months in, we came back out for an inspection. Cable tension had settled slightly, which is completely normal on a new unit as the cables seat and stretch — we adjusted both equalizer cables back to spec and rechecked lock synchronization. Anchor bolts were still at torque. No cylinder weep, no leaks at the fittings, hydraulic fluid clean and at level. The arm restraint gears showed light wear on one side, which told us he was consistently loading slightly off-center, and we corrected his positioning habit.

The maintenance load on automotive two post lifts in a home shop is genuinely light. Grease the carriage slide surfaces and column channels a couple times a year, check cable tension quarterly, inspect the locks by cycling them and listening for clean engagement on every notch, keep the hydraulic reservoir topped, and re-torque anchors annually. That is the whole list. What kills lifts is neglect over years — cables that were never adjusted, locks packed with dust and never lubricated, a slow leak nobody addressed until a seal blew. What We Would Do Differently Next Time

Two things. First, we would have run a second dedicated circuit to the lift location for accessories at the same time the electrician was pulling the main feeder. He now has a work light, an underhood drop, and a small parts washer all sharing an extension cord because adding a circuit later meant opening a finished wall. Wire more than you think you need while the walls are open. It costs almost nothing extra during the initial pull and is expensive to retrofit.

Second, we would have discussed arm configuration harder. He chose symmetric arms because the price was slightly better, and symmetric works fine for the older muscle cars he owns. But he has since bought a modern crossover, and symmetric arms put the door pillars right at the columns on a longer wheelbase vehicle. Asymmetric would have given him door clearance on everything. Configuration is one of those decisions that feels minor at quote time and shapes your daily experience for the next two decades.
