Every week somebody calls our shop in Ames trying to settle the same argument, and it almost always comes down to clearfloor vs baseplate two post lifts. The other partner looked at the ceiling, looked at the overhead beam height, and started doing math. What Actually Separates the Two Designs

Both styles are asymmetric or symmetric two-post lifts with the same basic guts: two columns, two carriages, four arms, a power unit, and equalization cables or chains. The difference is where the manufacturer routes that equalization hardware. A clearfloor lift — most people call it an overhead lift — sends the cables and the hydraulic hose up one column, across a header beam above the vehicle, and down the other side. A baseplate lift routes the same hardware through a low steel plate that sits on the concrete between the columns, usually covered by a ramp-shaped cover plate a couple inches tall.

That single routing decision drives everything else. The overhead style leaves you a completely open floor, which is why body shops and quick-service bays love it. The baseplate style leaves you unlimited height above the vehicle, which is why anybody working on lifted trucks, cargo vans, or box trucks in a low building gravitates toward it. You are choosing which one you can live with for the next twenty years. There is no third option that removes both, short of an inground lift and a very different concrete budget.

Ceiling Height Is the First Hard Filter

Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. We have had customers report a 14-foot ceiling and then discover the fire sprinkler main, a light fixture run, or a truss bottom chord sitting at 11 feet 6 inches directly over the intended lift centerline. That number is the one that matters. Most 10,000 lb overhead two-post lifts need somewhere around 12 feet of clear height to run full rise with the header beam in place, and taller-column versions need more than that.

We have also installed low-ceiling overhead units where the customer accepted that a tall van would kiss the beam at full lift, and they were fine with it because they only service sedans. Floor Access, Jacks, and Transmission Work

Here is where clearfloor earns its price premium. If you pull transmissions, drop rear ends, roll a tall jack stand under a frame, or push a floor jack across the bay all day, that baseplate cover becomes a daily annoyance. It is only a couple inches tall, but a caster hitting it at speed will jolt a transmission jack, and a low creeper does not cross it gracefully. Shops doing driveline work almost universally tell us they would pay the difference again for an open floor.

Baseplate defenders have a fair counterargument: the plate is low, most equipment rolls over it, and after a week you stop noticing. That is true for tire and brake work, alignments handled on a different rack, and general maintenance. It is less true for heavy repair. We had a rural Iowa shop that installed baseplate units because of a low roof, then built a small wooden ramp on each side of the cover plate to smooth out cart traffic — a homemade fix that worked fine for years. Concrete Requirements Do Not Change Much

A common misconception is that baseplate lifts need less concrete because the load is spread through the plate. That is not how it works. Both designs put nearly all of the load into the anchor bolts at each column base, so both need the same slab: typically a minimum of four inches of cured concrete at 3,000 PSI, and more for higher-capacity units. Manufacturers publish exact requirements per model and we follow them, because anchoring a 10,000 lb lift to a thin or cracked slab is how columns walk.

What does differ slightly is layout tolerance. With a baseplate unit, the columns are tied together at the floor, so the spacing between them is fixed by the plate itself and there is less room to shift one column an inch to dodge a bad spot in the slab or an existing floor drain. Overhead lifts give installers a bit more latitude there. We core-test slabs when a customer is unsure, and in older Iowa shops with a patched-in trench or a slab poured over the years in sections, that flexibility has saved a job more than once. Either way, plan on saw-cutting and repouring if the concrete under a column does not measure up.

Cost, Install Time, and Long-Term Service

Baseplate models generally land at a lower purchase price than comparable overhead models from the same manufacturer, and the gap widens as capacity climbs. Installation is a wash in most bays — the overhead beam adds an assembly step and a second set of hands, while the baseplate adds floor-plate alignment work. Neither one meaningfully changes a one-day install for a straightforward two-post.

Service is where we see a real long-term difference. Equalization cables and sheaves on an overhead lift live up in the header, out of the weather and out of the way of dropped tools, but you need a ladder or a lift to inspect them. On a baseplate unit, everything is at knee height — easier to look at during an annual inspection, but also sitting in whatever brake dust, salt brine, and washwater ends up on your floor. Which One We Recommend, By Shop Type

For a new-construction commercial bay with 13 or 14 feet of clear height, we recommend overhead almost every time. The open floor pays you back daily, resale is stronger, and you are not fighting a plate for the life of the building. Dealership service departments, collision shops, and multi-bay independents in central Iowa overwhelmingly go this direction, usually on a Rotary SPOA10 or a Challenger asymmetric model.

For home garages, pole barns, converted machine sheds, and any bay where the ceiling is under about twelve feet, baseplate is the practical winner. It is also the right call when you regularly lift tall vehicles — a dually with a topper or a Sprinter van needs every inch above the roof, and an overhead beam takes those inches away. What to Send Us Before You Order
