The owner called us because one column of his ten-year-old asymmetric unit was sitting roughly three-quarters of an inch lower than the other after a transmission job — a Silverado had been up on it for two days while the crew waited on a valve body. He assumed the hydraulics were leaking. They weren’t. One equalizer cable had stretched past its adjustment range and the other was starting to birdcage behind the sheave. What the Cables Actually Do — and What They Don’t

There is a persistent shop-floor myth that cables hold the vehicle up. On a surface-mount two-post, they don’t. Hydraulic cylinders carry the load. The cables are equalizers: they tie the two carriages together so both sides rise and fall at the same rate. That’s it. Which sounds minor until you realize an unequal carriage means an unequal load path, and an unequal load path means arms twisting, pads walking, and a truck that shifts when a tech breaks loose a subframe bolt. On overhead-style units the cables also route through the top beam and trip the safety-latch release, so a slack cable can leave latches partially engaged.

Baseplate designs run the cables and hoses through the floor plate instead of overhead, which changes the inspection access but not the physics. On automotive two post lifts of either configuration, the failure mode we see most often is not a snapped cable — it’s a stretched one that nobody adjusted. Stretch happens gradually. A cable elongates a few thousandths at a time over thousands of cycles, and the carriage it controls drifts lower until one side is riding on its latch while the other is still on hydraulic pressure. That Waukee shop had been living with a half-inch of drift for probably eighteen months without noticing, because nobody ever put a tape measure on both carriages at the same height.

The Six Wear Signs We Check Every Visit

When we open a column, we’re looking for six specific things, in order. First, broken wires — run a shop rag along the cable, and if it snags, you have a broken strand. Manufacturer thresholds vary, but as a practical rule, any broken wire near a fitting or three broken wires in one lay length means replace, not adjust. Second, birdcaging, where the strands separate and bulge outward. That’s a sign the cable has been shock-loaded or run over a worn sheave, and it never goes back. Third, corrosion. In Iowa, road salt tracked in on tires collects at the bottom of the column where the cable terminates, and we’ve pulled cables with pitting hidden under surface rust.

Fourth, flat spots and abrasion where the cable rubs a sheave flange or a column edge — that means alignment is off somewhere. Fifth, sheave condition. A grooved, dry, or seized sheave will chew through a brand-new cable in months, so we replace pulleys and bearings alongside cables far more often than shops expect. Sixth, the thread engagement at the adjuster nuts. If a technician has run the adjustment nearly out of travel to compensate for stretch, that cable is done regardless of how the strands look. Realistic Inspection and Replacement Intervals

ANSI/ALI ALOIM asks for a daily visual by the operator, a monthly check by shop personnel, and an annual inspection by a qualified inspector. That’s the floor, not the ceiling. Our own guidance for a busy tire-and-alignment shop is a quick equal-height check weekly, a cable and sheave inspection with the covers off quarterly, and a hard look at every cable end fitting annually as part of your ALI inspection. Write it on the whiteboard next to the alignment rack. If it isn’t scheduled, it doesn’t happen.

Replacement intervals are harder to pin down because duty cycle drives everything. A single-bay rural shop cycling four vehicles a day may run original cables fifteen years. A four-bay Waukee tire shop doing thirty lifts a day with a mix of half-ton trucks will typically want cables at the eight-to-twelve-year mark, and we’ve replaced sets at six. What we tell owners is this: if you don’t know the cable’s age, and the lift is older than a decade, budget for a set. A full cable set with sheaves is one of the least expensive line items in the whole lift, and it is dramatically cheaper than the alternative. Always replace cables as a set — a new cable paired with a stretched one just relocates the problem to the other column within a few months.

Why Transmission Service Is the Toughest Test

Transmission work is the single hardest duty cycle we see on two-post equipment, and it’s the reason we bring up cables so aggressively with drivetrain shops. A tire rotation is up and down in twelve minutes. A transmission R&R on a four-wheel-drive pickup is up for two days, sometimes a week, with the load sitting static on the safety latches while a 250-pound assembly comes out of the middle of the vehicle. Then it goes back in. The center of gravity moves, sometimes a lot, and the arms take asymmetric load the entire time.

Two things follow. First, that long static dwell is exactly when latch engagement matters, and latch engagement depends on cable tension being correct on both sides. If one carriage is a half-inch low, one column’s latch may be seated deep in its notch while the other rests near the edge. Second, long dwells are when hydraulic creep shows up — a cylinder that weeps slightly will let one carriage settle overnight, and the cable then takes load it was never designed to carry. We tell every transmission shop the same thing: after you lift, raise to height, lower onto the latches, and confirm both sides clicked at the same notch. What a Cable Replacement Actually Involves

Owners often assume a cable job is a two-hour swap. Sometimes it is. More often it’s a half day per lift, and it’s worth understanding why so you can schedule around it. The vehicle comes off, obviously, and the carriages get blocked or cribbed so nothing moves when tension comes off. Column covers come off. On overhead units, the top-beam covers and often the beam-mounted sheaves come apart, which means working from a ladder or a scissor lift. On baseplate units the floor plate cover comes up and you’re fighting whatever has been swept under it for a decade.

Then it’s routing. Every manufacturer runs cables a little differently — crossing routes, single-cable-per-side designs, dual crossover setups — and getting the routing wrong means the lift binds or the sheaves side-load. Once routed, both ends get terminated, then the adjustment sequence begins: raise, lower, check equal height, adjust, repeat, several cycles, because new cables seat and settle. Finish by verifying latch engagement at multiple heights and cycling the lift unloaded and then loaded. We also grease sheaves and inspect slider blocks while we’re in there, because you’ll never have better access. Documenting It So It Holds Up

The paperwork side matters more than most independent shops expect, and it costs almost nothing to do right. Keep a single binder or a shared folder per lift. In it: the serial plate photo, the original manual, the ALI inspection reports, and a dated log of every cable adjustment, cable replacement, sheave change, and latch repair. When an inspector or an insurance adjuster asks, that binder is your entire defense. When you sell the shop, it’s an asset. When a new tech asks how old the cables are, somebody actually knows.

A shop that documents thirty cycles a day on half-ton trucks gets a different replacement recommendation than one doing eight passenger cars, and both deserve a real answer rather than a generic interval pulled off a website.
