Choosing a two post lift capacity is the single decision that shapes everything else about your bay — the column height, the arm configuration, the concrete you’ll need, and whether the lift still fits your work five years from now. Start With the Heaviest Thing You’ll Ever Lift, Not the Average

The most common mistake we see is averaging. A shop owner tells us the typical car in his bay is a Camry or a RAV4, so a 9,000 or 10,000 lb rating sounds like plenty of margin. Then in February a customer shows up with a three-quarter-ton diesel pickup that needs brakes, and the lift is the reason the job goes down the street. Capacity planning is a worst-case exercise. Look at the heaviest vehicle you have serviced in the last twelve months, then assume something heavier is coming, because it is. Curb weights have climbed hard in the last decade and they are not going back down.

Here’s the reality in numbers we quote all the time. A half-ton crew cab pickup runs roughly 5,000 to 5,800 lb. A three-quarter-ton diesel with a long bed lands in the 7,500 to 8,500 lb range before you add a topper, tools, or a full fuel tank. A one-ton dually pushes past 9,000 lb empty. Full-size SUVs sit around 6,000 lb, and battery-electric crossovers and trucks add anywhere from 800 to 2,500 lb over their gas equivalents. A loaded Lightning or Silverado EV can approach 7,000 lb without trying. When you’re choosing a two post lift capacity, those are the numbers that matter — not the sedan you drove to work in.

Why 10,000 lb Is the Floor for Any Commercial Bay

We still sell 9,000 lb lifts, but almost exclusively into home garages where the owner knows exactly what will go on it and intends to keep it that way. For a commercial shop, 10,000 lb is the practical entry point and we treat it as the floor. A 10,000 lb two post handles every passenger car, every crossover, every half-ton pickup, and most three-quarter-tons in unloaded trim. Where 10,000 lb starts to feel tight is service trucks and anything with a bed full of equipment. We had a rural service outfit in north-central Iowa call us about a lift that kept stalling near the top with their own fleet trucks on it. Nothing was wrong with the lift — it was a healthy 10K unit — the trucks were simply loaded to about 9,600 lb with welders, spools, and a full tank. That’s inside the rating on paper and terrible in practice, because you’re running the hydraulics, cables, and arms at their limit on every single lift cycle. Components wear faster and the whole thing feels sluggish and unsettling. Choosing a two post lift capacity means leaving headroom for the equipment’s sake, not just for safety math. The 12,000 lb Sweet Spot for Mixed Iowa Work

If we had to recommend one rating for an Iowa general repair shop sight unseen, it would be 12,000 lb. That number covers the diesel pickups that dominate rural Iowa, the loaded service vans from contractors and plumbers, the box-body trucks that show up needing brakes, and every EV on the market right now with real margin left over. Rotary’s SPOA10 family is a workhorse, but the step up to a 12K clear-floor or two-post overhead unit is usually a modest price difference relative to the total installed cost — and it buys you a decade of relevance.

There’s a second benefit that doesn’t show up in the capacity spec. Higher-rated lifts generally come with longer, heavier arms, better adapter kits, taller columns, and more lifting height. That matters when a tech is under a dually trying to pull a transmission. We’ve had customers who bought a 12K purely for the weight rating and told us later the extra rise and the beefier arm reach were what they actually appreciated day to day. When to Go 15,000 lb or Higher

Above 12,000 lb you’re into a different category of shop. Fifteen thousand pound and 18,000 lb two post lifts exist for medium-duty work: F-450 and F-550 chassis, ambulances, shuttle buses, tow trucks, municipal and county fleet vehicles, and heavy service bodies. If any of those are in your regular mix, don’t try to make a 12K work. We get calls from fleet garages that bought too small and now have a lift they can only use half the week.

Heavy-capacity two post lifts bring real installation requirements, though, and you should know them before you commit. Column heights grow, so ceiling clearance becomes the limiting factor in a lot of older Iowa buildings. Concrete specs get stricter — we’re usually looking for a minimum thickness and compressive strength under each column, and on pre-1980 shop floors that often means saw-cutting and pouring new footings. Anchor bolt embedment goes deeper. Power requirements may shift from single-phase to three-phase depending on the model. None of this is a dealbreaker; it just needs to be part of the budget conversation up front rather than a surprise on install day. We’d rather core-test your floor before you order than after.

Asymmetric, Symmetric, and How Capacity Interacts With Layout

Capacity and configuration are separate decisions that people tend to blur together. Symmetric two post lifts place the vehicle centered between the columns with equal-length arms — great for trucks and vans, harder to get a car door open. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns and use unequal arms to push the vehicle rearward, so doors clear the posts. Most modern lifts are versymmetric, meaning the arms and column design let you do both reasonably well.

Here’s why it matters to capacity: a lift’s rating assumes the load is distributed properly across all four arms. Put a long-wheelbase dually on an asymmetric setup meant for cars and you can overload the front arms even though the total vehicle weight is under the rating. We check wheelbase and weight distribution alongside the number on the nameplate. This is also where bay width and door swing come in — a 12K or 15K lift needs more clear space around it than a 10K, and if your bays are 11 feet wide, that’s a genuine constraint. The Cost Difference Is Smaller Than You Think

We understand why people shop by rating — it’s the easiest number to compare. But the price delta between a quality 10,000 lb lift and a 12,000 lb lift from the same manufacturer is usually a small percentage of what you’ll spend total once you factor in freight, installation labor, anchors, concrete work if needed, electrical, and adapter kits. Stretching from a 10K to a 12K might move your total project cost by single-digit percentages. Buying the wrong capacity and replacing it in four years moves your cost by a hundred percent.

What we do push back on is over-buying beyond your actual work. A one-bay home shop that services a classic Chevelle, a minivan, and a lawn tractor does not need an 18,000 lb lift, and the added column height may not even fit under the garage door track. There’s a real cost to too much capacity: bigger footprint, higher install requirements, sometimes three-phase power you don’t have.
