When a small RV and trailer service shop east of Davenport called us about automotive two post lifts, they weren’t buying their first lift — they were buying their first good one. They had been dropping transmissions on jack stands and a floor jack in a bay with a 14-foot ceiling, and after the third time a tech strained his back wrestling a truck transmission out from under a Class C chassis, the owner decided he was done. Over the next twelve months we walked that shop from a bare concrete slab through model selection, an anchor-depth argument, install day, and their first scheduled service call. Why a Trailer Shop Wanted Automotive Two Post Lifts, Not a Four-Post

The first conversation was actually an argument against what they thought they wanted. The owner assumed a four-post drive-on was the safe bet because they handle trailers, and trailers roll. But almost none of their revenue came from trailer work on the lift — it came from the tow vehicles. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups, box vans, cutaway chassis, and the occasional dually. Transmission service on those platforms means you need the entire underside open: no runways in the way, no rolling jack to reposition every time you need to swing a crossmember out, and full clearance to drop a pan and get a transmission jack squarely under the case.

That’s exactly the job automotive two post lifts are built for. The vehicle hangs by its frame or pinch welds, the drivetrain is completely exposed, and a transmission jack rolls straight in from either side. We told them the honest version: if half their work were alignments or long-term storage, we’d have pushed a four-post. It wasn’t. It was fluid-and-filter services, valve body work, torque converter replacements, and rear main seals. For that mix, a two-post is not just adequate, it’s the correct tool, and buying anything else would have cost them time on every single job for the next decade.

Capacity: Why 10,000 lb Wasn’t Enough and 18,000 lb Was Too Much

Capacity is where most shops guess badly in both directions. This one started at 10,000 lb because that’s the number everybody knows. We ran the numbers on their actual vehicle list. A loaded one-ton crew cab dually with a service body and a full fuel tank can land in the 8,500 to 9,500 lb range. A cutaway chassis with a utility box on it gets there too. A 10,000 lb lift technically handles that, but you’re operating at 90 percent of rated capacity on a routine Tuesday, and that leaves nothing for the day somebody rolls in with a heavier chassis than expected.

So we moved them up. The 12,000 to 15,000 lb class of automotive two post lifts gives real margin, and the arms are built accordingly — thicker arm sections, larger swing pads, higher lifting points. We looked hard at 18,000 lb models and talked them out of it. That class typically needs more overhead height, heavier three-phase power in some configurations, deeper and thicker concrete, and the column footprint eats bay width. They had a 14-foot ceiling and a 24-foot-wide bay. Going to 18,000 would have solved a problem they didn’t have while creating three they’d feel every day. Right-sizing beats over-buying.

Clearfloor vs. Overhead: The Spec That Decided the Model

Here’s the spec comparison that actually settled the purchase. Overhead two-post designs run the equalization cables through a crossbar at the top of the columns. They’re cheaper to install in most cases, the floor stays completely clean, and the crossbar doubles as a height stop. The tradeoff is that the crossbar sets your maximum vehicle height. With a 14-foot ceiling and a lift with roughly a 12-foot overhead beam, a tall cutaway van body was going to make contact before the lift reached full rise.

Baseplate — or clearfloor, depending on whose catalog you’re reading — runs the cables through a low channel across the floor between the columns. Nothing overhead, so vehicle height is limited only by your building. The tradeoff is that you drive over that channel every time, and on a shop floor that sees creepers and transmission jacks daily, it’s a bump you learn to live with. We’ve had customers in North Dakota and Missouri land on baseplate for exactly this reason: low ceilings or tall vehicles force the decision. This shop went baseplate. Twelve months in, they’ve never once regretted it, and the only complaint is that the transmission jack occasionally catches the channel edge if you’re careless.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Part of Install Nobody Budgets For

Their slab was the problem. The building was a 1980s pole structure with a slab poured in sections, and a core sample near the planned column locations came back at roughly four and a half inches with no visible rebar. Manufacturer specs for this capacity class generally call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many models want more — some 15,000 lb units specify six inches. Four and a half inches of unknown-age concrete of unknown strength is not something we’re willing to bolt a column to and walk away from.

So they cut two pads. Roughly four feet by six feet under each column, saw-cut, broken out, doweled into the surrounding slab, and repoured at eight inches with rebar. Then it cured for 28 days before we torqued a single anchor. That added meaningful cost and a month to the timeline, and it was absolutely the right call. We tell every customer the same thing: the anchor bolts on automotive two post lifts are the only thing standing between a ten-thousand-pound truck and your floor. Install Week: What Actually Happens in the Bay

Install on a standard two-post runs a day for our crew once the concrete is right. Columns get set, plumbed, and squared to each other within tight tolerance — if the columns aren’t parallel and level, the carriages bind and you’ll be chasing that for years. Anchors get drilled, cleaned, set, and torqued to spec with a calibrated wrench, and we shim under the baseplates where the floor isn’t dead flat. Then the cables get routed and the equalization is set so both carriages rise and fall together.

The electrical is where jobs stall. This shop had a 240-volt single-phase circuit available on the wall, which covered the power unit fine, but the disconnect location needed to move so an operator standing at the controls could reach it. We coordinated with their electrician and it added a half day. After that came cycling: run the lift empty through its full travel a dozen times, listen to the locks engage at every position, verify both sides land on the same lock tooth, and bleed the hydraulic system properly. Then we loaded a truck and did it again. We walked their two techs through the safety locks, the arm restraints, and the correct lift-point locations on the chassis they see most often. That training session matters more than most owners expect.

Month One Through Six: Learning the Lift on Real Transmission Work

The first thing they noticed was speed. A transmission fluid and filter service on a heavy pickup that used to eat ninety minutes on the floor dropped to well under an hour. The second thing they noticed was that they’d been positioning vehicles wrong. Two-post lifting is all about balance — get the center of gravity too far forward or back and the vehicle wants to tip on the arms. On a pickup with an empty bed and a heavy front end, you set the arms differently than on a loaded cutaway. Their techs learned that within the first two weeks, mostly by watching the arms flex.

Around month three they called about a noise. One carriage was making a light scraping sound at about half height. It turned out to be the slide blocks needing lubrication — a completely normal maintenance item that gets skipped because nobody reads the manual. We walked them through greasing the column channels and it went away. That’s the kind of thing automotive two post lifts need periodically, and it takes fifteen minutes. By month six they’d added a weekly walkaround: check the cables, check the arm restraint pins, check the lock release, look for hydraulic weeping at the cylinder and hose fittings. Five minutes on a Monday morning.

The First Annual Inspection and What We Found

At the twelve-month mark we came back for the first documented annual inspection. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for a qualified lift inspector annually, and if you’re a commercial shop, your insurance carrier and your OSHA exposure both care about that paperwork existing. What we found was unremarkable in the best way. Cable tension had relaxed slightly, which is completely normal in the first year as the system settles — we re-tensioned and re-equalized both sides. Anchor bolts got re-torqued, and two had backed off a few foot-pounds. Also normal.

The one real finding was arm restraint wear. The gear teeth on one restraint were showing more polish than the other three, which told us the techs were consistently loading that arm at an angle instead of straight. That’s a habit correction, not a parts replacement, but we flagged it so it doesn’t become one. We also replaced a hydraulic hose that had a small weep at the crimp. Total downtime: about three hours. Compare that to what an unplanned cable failure costs and the math is obvious. If you’re running automotive two post lifts commercially and you’ve never had a documented inspection, that’s the single highest-value phone call you can make.
