Third: the CL series uses a slightly heavier gauge column steel at the entry-level 10K compared to Rotary SPO10, 5/16 inch vs. Rotary 1/4 inch on the outer column skin, though both use identical 3/8-inch inner column steel. That extra outer skin adds about 30 pounds per column and does not affect performance directly, but it does add resistance to accidental cart bumps and dolly strikes, which family-owned shops actually deal with more than you would think. Challenger Iowa parts pipeline has strengthened significantly since 2015 and now runs about as reliably as Rotary’s.

Column steel gauge and its real effect on bearing work

Column steel gauge on automotive two post lifts sounds like an obscure spec, but it directly affects how the lift performs during wheel bearing service. Thinner column steel flexes more under load. Flex is not a safety issue at any ALI-certified thickness, the engineering has huge margins, but flex is an ergonomic issue when you are doing precision bearing work. Both Rotary SPO series and Challenger CL series are ALI Gold certified at their respective column gauges, so there is no safety difference, but the Challenger slightly heavier outer skin gives the tech a marginally more solid feel during heavy bearing-press operations. On the SPOA12 and CL12 heavy-duty models, both brands step up the column steel to 3/8 inch inner and 3/8 inch outer, and both feel effectively identical under load. For a Great Lakes shop doing daily wheel bearing service, the 12K class is usually the right investment even if the vehicles average 6,000 to 8,000 lb.

Arm reach and hub access

This is a geometry question that varies by lift model and by vehicle. Where the two diverge is in the maximum reach at full extension: Rotary SPO12 rear arm reaches 55.5 inches, Challenger CL12 rear arm reaches 54 inches. That inch and a half does not matter for 95 percent of vehicles, but on a long-wheelbase crew-cab pickup with a specific frame geometry, it occasionally does. Adapters solve most edge cases in either direction. For a Great Lakes family-owned shop doing wheel bearing service across a mix of crew-cab trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars, either brand arm geometry works reliably. The bigger geometric variable is column-to-column spread, and here Rotary SPO12 at 114 inches and Challenger CL12 at 111 inches are close enough that either fits standard bay layouts.
