A restoration shop owner about ninety minutes south of us, right along the Iowa-Missouri border, called last spring asking about automotive two post lifts and got about four minutes into the conversation before the real question surfaced: how is a semi going to get a pair of thousand-pound columns down a gravel county road and off a trailer at his shop? He had a forklift. He did not have a dock. That is the part of the buying process that catalogs skip entirely, and it is the part that goes wrong most often. Start With the Budget Number, Not the Model Number

Every good decision tree for automotive two post lifts starts with what you are actually willing to spend, because that number eliminates entire branches immediately. We hear three broad tiers. Under roughly five thousand dollars, you are shopping entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb units, usually baseplate, usually no installation included, and you are doing your own unloading and assembly. A caller in North Dakota told us plainly he was willing to spend about forty-one hundred, needed baseplate because he could not do overhead, and did not want install at all. That is a coherent plan — it just puts freight and unloading squarely on him.

The middle tier, roughly five to nine thousand, opens up better commercial-grade steel, real arm restraints, better lock mechanisms, and either baseplate or overhead. Above that you are into heavy-capacity units, three-stage arms, and the kind of equipment a busy shop runs for twenty-five years. We had a Missouri caller tell us he did not feel the need to spend ten grand — and honestly, for a restoration hobbyist working on his own car, he did not have to. What we told him was the same thing we will tell you: pick the tier honestly, then let the tier tell you which configurations are on the table. Working the other direction, falling in love with a model and then trying to bend the budget to it, is how people end up with a lift that does not fit their building or their work.

Branch Two: Ceiling Height Decides Baseplate or Overhead

Once the budget sets the field, the building narrows it. Measure the lowest obstruction in the bay — not the peak of the roof. Garage door tracks, open-web trusses, HVAC runs, and light fixtures all count. If your lowest obstruction is under about 12 feet, overhead automotive two post lifts are usually off the table, and a baseplate configuration is your answer. That North Dakota shop had a hard ceiling limit of 139 inches, which is a hair over 11.5 feet. No overhead beam was going in there, and pretending otherwise would have wasted everyone’s time.

If you have 12 feet or better, overhead becomes attractive, especially for restoration and alignment work where you want a completely open floor. The tradeoff is that overhead units need more precise column alignment and a solid slab under both posts, and the top beam adds real weight and awkwardness to the install. For a restoration shop doing alignment, we also push people to think about what goes on the floor under the car. Alignment work means turn plates, slip plates, targets on wheels, and a tech kneeling with a wrench on tie rod ends. A floor ramp between the columns is a genuine nuisance in that scenario. If the building will support overhead, take it. If it will not, a good asymmetric baseplate unit still does alignment fine — you just live with the crossover.

Branch Three: Vehicle Weight, Wheelbase, and Arm Reach

The third branch is what you are lifting, and it has two halves people conflate. Rated capacity is the easy half. Add up the heaviest vehicle you realistically touch, add margin, and buy above it. A shop whose worst case is a 6,000 lb pickup can live on a 9,000 or 10,000 lb unit; a shop that occasionally sees a three-quarter-ton with a topper and a full bed should be looking at 12,000 lb or more. Restoration shops sometimes underestimate here because a stripped project car is light — but the customer truck that pays the bills is not.

The harder half is geometry. Arm reach and column spread determine whether you can get pads to the pinch welds or frame rails on a long-wheelbase vehicle, and whether a low, wide car will clear the columns at all. Low-profile arms matter more than most buyers think; a California caller who reached us specifically asked for them because he works on cars and does oil service on the lift, and standard arms simply will not slide under a lowered vehicle. For alignment work on classic cars with unusual jacking points, we go through arm and adapter options one by one. This is also where automotive two post lifts differ most between brands, and where a five-minute phone call saves you from an expensive mistake — the spec sheet numbers do not tell you how the arms swing around a real fender.

Freight: How the Lift Actually Gets to You

Now the logistics. A two-post ships as freight, not parcel. Typically that is two columns strapped to a pallet or skidded together, plus a carton with arms, a power unit, hardware, and hoses. Total shipping weight for a 10,000 lb unit commonly runs 1,500 to 2,200 pounds, and the columns are long — often ten to twelve feet. That length is why a straight truck cannot always do it and why the carrier may send a 53-foot trailer down your road whether or not your road wants a 53-foot trailer. Along the Iowa-Missouri border, that means gravel, soft spring shoulders, low limbs, and the occasional one-lane bridge with a weight posting.

We ask three questions before booking freight. Can a full-size semi physically reach your building and turn around? If not, we arrange a smaller truck or a terminal pickup, and we tell you the cost difference up front instead of surprising you with a redelivery fee. Second, is there a liftgate need? Liftgates on freight this heavy are limited and sometimes impossible, which is why forklift access changes everything. Third, who signs and inspects? Freight damage on lift columns happens — bent baseplates, crushed carton corners, a dented cylinder. You must inspect before the driver leaves and note damage on the delivery receipt. A clean signature on damaged freight ends the claim before it starts, and we cannot fix that after the fact.

Unloading: Forklift, Skid Steer, or a Very Bad Afternoon

Unloading is where the border-country shops actually have an advantage. Nearly every farm-adjacent operation we deal with has a skid steer, a tractor with forks, or a forklift, and any of those turns a two-hour ordeal into a ten-minute job. The Missouri restoration caller I mentioned had a forklift and a 16-foot door, which meant we could set the pallet down inside the building out of the weather and he could stage assembly at his own pace. If you have forks, tell us — it changes what we book and what it costs.

If you do not have forks, you have three real options and one bad one. Option one: rent a rough-terrain forklift for a half day; it is inexpensive relative to the lift and vastly safer. Option two: pick the freight up at the carrier’s terminal, where they have a dock and a forklift, and haul it home on a flatbed trailer. Option three: have us handle delivery and install as a package, which is what most commercial shops choose, because our crew shows up with the equipment and the experience to move columns without dropping one. The bad option is four guys, a couple of engine hoists, and hope. A two-post column is roughly six hundred pounds of top-heavy steel. We have seen one go over. Nobody wants to see the second.

Anchoring, Concrete, and the Step People Rush

Once the freight is inside, the slab decides your timeline. Automotive two post lifts anchor into concrete with wedge anchors, and every manufacturer specifies a minimum thickness, strength, and cure age. Four inches of 3,000 PSI is a common floor for lighter units; heavier capacities want more, and overhead units want it under both columns equally. We have had callers describe their slab as “about five inches, maybe less,” which is exactly the answer that means nobody has ever drilled it. Take a core sample or at minimum drill a test hole and measure. It costs almost nothing compared to redoing an anchor job.

If the slab is too thin, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad under each column. In an existing shop that means saw cutting, breaking out concrete, hauling debris, forming, pouring, and waiting on cure — commonly 28 days to full strength, though some high-early mixes shorten that. Plan for it. Also plan for anchor placement relative to control joints and cracks; you cannot land an anchor in a joint and expect it to hold. One more border-country reality: unheated shops. Several callers have specifically noted no heat in the floor, which is fine for the lift but matters for a winter pour and for hydraulic fluid viscosity on cold mornings. We spec fluid accordingly and tell people to cycle the lift once before loading it when the shop is below freezing.

Putting the Decision Tree Together

Walk it in order and the answer usually falls out on its own. Budget tier sets your field. Ceiling height picks baseplate or overhead. Heaviest vehicle and longest wheelbase set capacity and arm style. Road access and forklift availability set your freight plan. Slab thickness sets your schedule. Skipping steps is what produces the calls we get in July from someone whose columns are sitting on a pallet in the driveway in the rain because the ceiling is too low and the slab is too thin.
