When a municipal fleet manager in Ankeny called us about replacing three aging automotive two post lifts in a city maintenance bay, the first question wasn’t price — it was liability. His techs pull shocks, struts, and control arms off squad cars, plow trucks, and half-ton pickups every week, and every one of those jobs puts a wrenching tech under a suspended vehicle with heavy hand tools and impact guns. That’s the whole reason we walk fleet buyers through specs before we ever quote a model. We’re based in Ames, we install across central Iowa, and we’ve seen what happens when a lift gets specified on capacity alone. Here’s the safety-first walkthrough we gave him, model numbers and all.

Start With the Heaviest Vehicle, Not the Average One

Fleet shops get this backwards constantly. Somebody adds up the sedans in the fleet, sees 4,500 lb curb weights, and figures a 9,000 lb lift is plenty. Then a loaded three-quarter-ton with a service body and a tool crib in the bed rolls in and the math falls apart. Capacity ratings on two-post equipment assume balanced loading across all four arms, and a truck with a plow hanging off the front is not balanced. We tell every fleet buyer to spec against the heaviest, worst-distributed vehicle they might ever put in the air, then add margin.

For the Ankeny shop, the heaviest unit was a 8,200 lb crew cab with an upfitted bed. That ruled out the 10,000 lb class immediately in our opinion — not because 10,000 can’t hold 8,200 pounds, but because the arm reach and pad geometry on a 10K unit gets marginal on a long-wheelbase truck. We pointed him toward 12,000 and 15,000 lb models. A Rotary SPOA84 or a Challenger CL12 gives you the arm length and column strength to handle fleet trucks without the operator standing there doing arithmetic in his head every time. Buying one class up is the cheapest safety upgrade available on automotive two post lifts, and it costs a few hundred dollars more, not a few thousand.

Overhead Versus Baseplate: The Suspension Work Decision

This is where suspension and shock work changes the answer. A baseplate two-post routes hydraulic lines and equalization cables through a floor plate between the columns. That plate is maybe an inch and a half tall, and every transmission jack, every oil drain, every creeper rolls over it all day. For a shop that does mostly wheels-free suspension work, we usually push overhead instead — clear floor, nothing to trip on, nothing to catch a jack wheel when a tech is muscling a coil spring assembly out of a wheel well.

The tradeoff is ceiling height. Overhead models on 12,000 lb automotive two post lifts typically want 13 to 14 feet of clear height at the crossbeam, and city maintenance buildings built in the 1980s often don’t have it. One buyer we worked with in North Dakota had a hard 139-inch ceiling limit and a 6,000 lb max vehicle, which pushed him straight to baseplate — right call for his building. If your ceiling is under about 12 feet 6 inches, baseplate is your answer and you plan around the plate. If you’ve got the height, overhead is the better working environment for suspension jobs. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the deck: door tracks, unit heaters, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures all count.

Concrete Is a Safety Spec, Not a Detail

Every anchor bolt in a two-post installation is transferring overturning moment into your slab. Manufacturers publish minimums — typically 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for 10K units, more for higher capacities — and those numbers are not negotiable. We had a Missouri buyer tell us his slab was “about 5 inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the entire question. We core-drill or hammer-test before installation on every job where slab thickness is uncertain, and we’ve walked away from installs where the pour was 3 inches over gravel.

For fleet shops in Iowa, the other slab issue is age and reinforcement. A 1970s municipal garage floor may be thick enough but cracked through, or it may have been saw-cut for trench drains right where you want a column. Both problems are solvable — you cut out a section, form a proper footing pad, and pour to spec — but you want to know before the equipment shows up on a truck. We include a slab evaluation in every quote for automotive two post lifts because it’s the difference between a five-hour install and a two-week concrete detour. If you’re planning a new building, tell your concrete contractor where the lifts are going and have him thicken those pads while the forms are still up. It’s nearly free at that stage.

Reading Model Numbers So You Can Actually Compare

Manufacturer model numbers look like alphabet soup until you learn the pattern, and then they tell you almost everything. On Rotary two-post equipment, SPO means symmetric, SPOA means asymmetric, the number is capacity in hundreds of pounds, and suffixes flag column height and arm style. An SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric overhead; an SPO12 is a 12,000 lb symmetric. Challenger uses CL followed by capacity, with letters for configuration. Once you can read them, cross-shopping is straightforward instead of guesswork.

Symmetric versus asymmetric matters more than most buyers realize. Symmetric arms are equal length and the vehicle sits centered between the columns — great for trucks and long wheelbases, but the doors open into the columns. Asymmetric rotates the vehicle back so the driver’s door clears, which is what you want if techs are getting in and out to run the parking brake or start the engine. Fleet suspension work usually means doors open a lot, so we lean asymmetric for car-heavy fleets and symmetric for truck-heavy ones. If your bay sees both, some models split the difference with adjustable-reach arms. Spec sheets on automotive two post lifts also list rise time, minimum pad height, and maximum lifting height — check minimum pad height against your lowest vehicle before you commit.

The Daily Safety Inspection Nobody Actually Does

ANSI/ALI standards call for a daily walkaround and an annual inspection by a qualified inspector. In practice, we find shops that haven’t looked at their equalization cables in six years. On automotive two post lifts, those cables don’t carry the vehicle — hydraulics do — but they keep the carriages synchronized, and a stretched or frayed cable means one side climbs faster than the other. That’s how a vehicle walks off the pads.

Here’s the ninety-second version we teach fleet techs: with the lift down, look at both cables for broken strands, kinks, and corrosion at the sheaves. Check that both carriages sit at the same height. Cycle the lift up a foot and listen for the safety latches clicking on both columns in sync — if one column’s latches are silent or lagging, stop and call us. Look under the power unit for weeping fluid and check the reservoir level. Grab each arm and try to rotate it; the arm restraint should hold it. Finally, eyeball the anchor bolts for rust streaks or a visible gap under the base plate, which means the anchor is pulling. Write it on a clipboard by the door. A fleet manager who can show a documented inspection log has a much better week when a safety audit lands.

What Suspension and Shock Work Demands From the Equipment

Suspension jobs are hard on lifts in ways oil changes aren’t. You’re applying big torque loads laterally — breaking loose a rusty strut nut, hammering a ball joint, pressing a bushing — while the vehicle hangs on four pads. That means arm restraints have to actually work, pad adapters have to be the right height and not worn round, and the lift needs to be rock-solid on its anchors. A lift that shudders when a tech hits a stubborn nut with a 3/4-drive impact is telling you something.

We spec truck adapters and stackable pad extensions for any fleet doing suspension work on pickups, because reaching a proper frame lift point on a 4×4 without extensions means putting pads on pinch welds that were never designed for it. We also push wheels-free access hard: with a two-post, the wheels hang free by design, which is exactly why these are the right tool for shocks, struts, and brakes versus a four-post that traps the wheels on runways. The Ankeny shop ended up with two 12,000 lb overhead units and a set of adapters, and their strut replacement time dropped because techs weren’t fighting for room. Budget, Lifecycle, and Getting Parts When It Matters

Fleet budgets run on capital cycles, so let’s talk honestly about tiers. Entry-level imported 10,000 lb two-post equipment lands in the low four figures. Mid-tier units with better arm hardware and real support run in the mid-to-high four figures. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger models in the 12,000 to 15,000 lb class sit in the five-figure range once you include install and adapters. Used equipment exists and we sell it when we have it, but for a municipal shop with liability exposure, we generally recommend new with documented certification.

The number that actually matters over twenty years isn’t purchase price — it’s downtime. A city garage with one hoist down is a city garage that can’t service plow trucks in February.
