When a tire and alignment shop owner in Waterloo asked us to look at his automotive two post lifts, he did not want a sales pitch — he wanted somebody to tell him honestly whether the three units in his bays were safe to keep running. Two were pushing nineteen years old. One had a cable that had been “adjusted” so many times the threads were nearly out of the take-up. He had been quoted new equipment by a phone rep who had never seen the building. We drove up from Ames, put hands on all three, and walked the bays with him for two hours. That inspection is the framework for this article, and it is the same walkthrough we would do in your shop.

Start With the Anchors, Not the Arms

Every safety walkthrough we do begins on the floor. Get a flashlight down at the base plate of each column and look at the anchor bolts. You are checking three things: whether every anchor hole is actually filled, whether the nuts are torqued to the manufacturer’s spec, and whether the concrete around the anchors shows radiating hairline cracks or spalling. Spalling around an anchor means the concrete is failing under load, and that is a stop-work condition.

At the Waterloo shop, the middle bay had two empty anchor holes on the offside column. Somebody had snapped bolts years back and simply never replaced them, which meant the column was carrying its overturning moment on fewer fasteners than the engineer designed for. That is exactly how a column starts to walk. We also found the base of one column sitting on a stack of four shims that had never been grouted, so the load path was compressing shim steel rather than bearing evenly. Neither problem was expensive to fix — new anchors, proper torque, and a grouted base — but both had been invisible to a shop owner who had been walking past them daily for years. If you own automotive two post lifts and have not put a torque wrench on the anchors since installation day, that is where to start this week.

Cables, Sheaves, and the Nineteen-Year Problem

Equalization cables are the component that ages most predictably and the one owners most often ignore. They do not carry the vehicle’s weight — the hydraulic cylinders do — but they keep the two carriages synchronized, and a failed cable lets one side drop out of step with the other. On a vehicle with the wheels off for an alignment or tire job, that is not a small event.

Inspect the full run of each cable with a rag and a gloved hand. You are feeling for broken strands, which will snag the rag, and looking for corrosion, flat spots, and kinks. Check the sheaves at the top and bottom for grooving and for bearings that no longer spin freely. Then look at the threaded adjustment rod at the terminations: if it is nearly bottomed out from years of taking up stretch, the cable has already elongated past its useful service life and adjusting it further is not maintenance, it is denial. That was the situation on one of the Waterloo units. We quoted a complete cable set, both sheaves, and new sheave pins for a figure in the mid hundreds — cheap next to a replacement lift. Across the automotive two post lifts we service in northeast Iowa, cables typically want replacement somewhere between years seven and twelve depending on cycle count and whether the shop is heated in the winter.

Locks, Pawls, and the Sound You Should Hear

The mechanical locks are what actually hold the vehicle once it is up. Hydraulics raise the load; locks hold it. Every lift should be raised into its locks before anyone works underneath, and every tech in the building should know what a healthy lock engagement sounds like — a crisp, evenly spaced series of clicks on both columns as the carriages rise.

What you do not want is silence on one side, a mushy single click, or clicks that do not match column to column. Silence usually means a pawl spring has broken or the pawl is gummed with old grease and road salt. Mismatched clicks mean the carriages are out of sync, which loops back to cable adjustment. At the Waterloo shop, the oldest unit had a pawl on the driver’s column that would engage only intermittently, and the tech using that bay had gotten so used to it he no longer noticed. That is the dangerous part — familiarity. Pawls, springs, and the air-release cylinders that retract them are inexpensive stocked parts for nearly every brand, and swapping them takes a technician under an hour per column. We also check the automatic arm restraints in the same pass, since a worn restraint gear lets an arm swing out from under a pickup during a tire rotation.

Alignment Work Puts Different Loads on the Equipment

A tire and alignment shop is a harder environment for a two-post than a general repair shop, and it is worth understanding why. Alignment work means wheels are frequently off the ground and off the vehicle, techs are pushing and pulling on tie rods and cam bolts, and lateral force is being applied to a load that is fifty-plus inches in the air. Two-post equipment is engineered for that, but the safety margin depends on everything below being in spec.

Practically, this means three things. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s designated lift points every single time — pinch welds and frame rails, never a control arm or a fuel tank strap. Set the arms so the load is centered between the columns front to back; on a truck, an asymmetric setup with the vehicle biased rearward keeps the center of gravity where the engineers intended. And confirm the lift is in its locks before a wrench touches a suspension component, because a tech leaning hard on a breaker bar is applying real horizontal force. We also strongly recommend true alignment-rated equipment for shops doing volume alignment work rather than trying to make general-purpose automotive two post lifts do a job better suited to a four-post rack with slip plates and turnplates. The Waterloo owner ended up keeping two-posts for tire and brake work and adding dedicated alignment capacity, which was the right split.

What Twenty Years Actually Costs

The number that surprises people is how cheap a good lift is over its life. Put realistic figures against a twenty-year run. A quality 10,000 or 12,000 lb two-post from a major brand lands in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on capacity and configuration. Professional installation adds roughly a thousand to two thousand. If the slab needs a pad pour, add a few thousand more, once.

Then maintenance. Annual inspection and lubrication is a modest per-visit charge, call it two to four hundred a year if you have us out. One cable set somewhere around year eight to twelve, mid hundreds in parts plus labor. A power unit or seal kit maybe once in twenty years, another several hundred. Assorted pawls, springs, restraint gears, and hoses across two decades, a few hundred more. Total lifetime cost lands in a range most shops recover inside the first two years of billable hours from that bay. Divide it across twenty years and well-chosen automotive two post lifts cost less annually than a single decent scan tool subscription. The expensive path is the other one: buying the cheapest unit available, skipping inspections, and replacing it at year eight with a bent column and a slab that has to be repaired anyway.

Repair, Rebuild, or Replace

We get asked to make this call constantly and there is a reasonably clear line. Repair when the structure is sound. Columns straight and plumb, carriages tracking smoothly, base plates solid on good concrete, no cracked welds — in that case cables, pawls, restraints, hoses, and even a full power unit are all routine parts jobs. We have brought twenty-five-year-old units back to fully serviceable condition for a fraction of replacement cost.

Replace when the structure is compromised. A visibly bowed column, cracked welds at a base plate, elongated anchor holes, carriage rollers that have worn grooves into the column channel, or a discontinued model with no parts support — those are replacement conditions and we will say so. Age alone is not a reason. At the Waterloo shop the verdict was mixed: two units got a full parts refresh and are still working today, and the third, which had a column with visible deformation from an old drive-into incident, got replaced. That is the honest answer most of the time. We are a parts distributor as well as an installer, so we make money either way, and we would rather keep serviceable equipment running.
