A baseplate configuration ties the columns together through steel plates bolted to the slab, with no overhead structure at all. The overhead style is the one most shops picture when they think of a classic alignment rack, because it’s been the standard in dealership service departments for decades. Overhead units take slightly longer to set because of the top beam assembly and additional leveling checks at height, while baseplate units go together a bit faster since there’s less to align vertically.

Either way, we tell every shop the same thing about return to service: plan to stay off the lift for several hours after grouting so it sets up properly. Shops that need the bay back in production fast sometimes push us to skip this, and we don’t, because a lift that isn’t level costs more in redone alignments than the wait ever does.
