Why Dealership Service Bays Move Toward a 4-Post for Pan Work

Techs pulling oil pan gaskets all day want a flat, stable platform where they can roll a transmission jack or pan jack underneath without fighting a swing arm or a narrow lift point. A two-post lift is fine for brake jobs and tire work, but when you’re dropping pans on trucks and SUVs with skid plates and dual exhaust, the open runway of a drive-on four-post gives techs room to work standing or kneeling without ducking around arms and pads.

The other reason dealerships lean this direction is flexibility. A bendpak 4-post alignment lift isn’t just a fluid-service platform — it doubles as an alignment rack when it’s fitted with turn plates and slip plates. For a service manager trying to get more use out of every bay, that’s the appeal: one piece of equipment covers gasket work, brake jobs, and alignments instead of needing three separate stations. Measuring the Bay Before We Talk Lift Models

Before we quote anything, we need real numbers from the bay: ceiling height, door width, floor slope, and the distance from the bay’s front wall to any support columns or drains. A typical bendpak 4-post alignment lift runway package needs roughly 20 to 22 feet of usable floor length once you account for the ramps on each end, and most configurations run somewhere in the 12-foot-wide range for the runway pair. We also ask about approach angle — how a truck or SUV enters the bay — because a runway that’s too close to a wall or a support post forces techs to creep vehicles on at an angle, which slows everything down and increases the odds of a mirror or bumper clipping something. Older shop floors, especially ones poured decades ago for lighter service work, sometimes don’t meet that without a slab supplement or a full re-pour under the runway footprint.

We core-test or at least visually inspect the slab on every install quote because anchoring a bendpak 4-post alignment lift into cracked or under-spec concrete is the single most common cause of lift instability complaints we get called out for later. It’s cheaper to find out the slab needs help before the lift ships than after it’s sitting half-anchored in a bay. Freight, Forklift Access, and Delivery Logistics

Once the site checks out, delivery is its own project. A four-post alignment package ships on a flatbed in multiple crates — runways, ramps, control tower, hydraulic components — and most freight carriers expect a forklift or loading dock on site to unload. If your shop doesn’t have a forklift, we can usually arrange liftgate delivery or coordinate with our install crew to bring equipment, but that needs to be flagged when we schedule, not the morning the truck arrives.

We always ask the same questions before scheduling: is there a pit or is this a surface-mount install, what’s the overhead door clearance for getting crates into the bay, and is there a clear path from the drop point to the install location. For the Ankeny dealership, we scheduled a two-day window — one day to confirm the slab and stage components, one day to set runways, run hydraulics, and calibrate the alignment sensors. That kind of lead time planning avoids a truck sitting on a job site with nowhere to unload.

Alignment Kit Options for a Drive-On Rack

Not every four-post drive-on lift comes alignment-ready out of the box. If you want turn plates, slip plates, and rear slip plates built into the runway, that has to be specified before the order goes in — retrofitting turn plate pockets into a runway that’s already poured and anchored is a much bigger job than building it in from day one. We walk every dealership customer through whether they need full alignment capability now or whether a straight drive-on lift with an alignment kit added later makes more sense for their volume.

For the Ankeny shop, the answer was full alignment capability from day one, since they were already sending alignment work to a competitor down the road and wanted to bring that revenue in-house. That decision changed the runway spec, the control box wiring, and where the alignment sensor targets needed clearance — all things that get locked in during the site survey, not after delivery.

Comparing Runway Length Against Vehicle Mix

Runway length matters more than most shops expect. A standard-length runway handles most cars and light trucks fine, but if your bay regularly sees extended-cab trucks, vans, or larger SUVs with long wheelbases, you need the extended-length runway option or vehicles will hang off the back ramp during pan work, which is both a safety issue and an annoyance for techs trying to access the pan bolts. We’ve seen shops order the standard-length version to save floor space and regret it within a month once a customer brings in a diesel dually.

We ask every customer to walk us through their actual vehicle mix — not what they wish they serviced, but what actually rolls through the bay day to day — before we finalize runway length. It’s a five-minute conversation that prevents a very expensive mistake, since swapping runway length after install means new anchors, new concrete work, and lost bay time.

What the Final Install Day Looks Like

On install day, our crew sets runways to the surveyed layout, anchors according to the slab spec we confirmed earlier, runs hydraulic lines to the power unit, and calibrates the alignment electronics if the kit is included. We test drive-on clearance with an actual vehicle from the shop’s own fleet before we call the job done, because a lift that looks level on paper can still have a real-world clearance issue if a mirror hits a wall or a bumper catches a ramp edge.

For the Ankeny dealership, that final walkthrough caught a minor ramp angle adjustment on one runway before we signed off — a five-minute fix that would have been a headache to discover after we left.
