Buying a used car lift can save real money over new equipment, but only if the lift you’re looking at is actually worth buying. We’ve been called out to inspect plenty of secondhand lifts sitting in Iowa garages and shops, and about half the time we find something the seller either didn’t know about or didn’t mention. Before you hand over cash for a used two-post, four-post, or scissor lift, there’s a specific checklist we walk through every time. Why the Manufacturer and Model Number Matter First
Before you even look at the physical condition, find the manufacturer’s data plate and model number. This single step separates a smart purchase from a headache. If the plate is missing, painted over, or the seller can’t tell you the exact model, that’s already a red flag when buying a used car lift. Parts availability varies enormously by brand, and some older or off-brand lifts were built by companies that no longer exist, meaning cables, cylinders, and control boards may be impossible to source.

If you’re buying a used car lift and the seller says “it’s a generic two-post, brand unknown,” walk away or plan on it being a parts donor rather than a working investment. A lift with a clear model number and a healthy parts ecosystem is worth more, even if it looks a little rougher, than a mystery brand in showroom condition.
Check the Cables, Chains, and Hydraulic Lines Closely
Cables and chains are the wear items that fail most often, and they’re also the cheapest thing to check and the most dangerous to ignore. Look for fraying, kinks, rust, or uneven wear across the cable’s length, especially near the pulleys and anchor points. On chain-style lifts, check for stretched links or visible rust pitting. These are consumable parts, so finding worn ones isn’t automatically a dealbreaker, but it should factor into your offer.
Hydraulic lines and cylinders tell a different story. Look underneath for any sign of oil weeping around fittings, seals, or the base of the cylinder. A little surface grime is normal on a used lift; active fluid leaks are not. Ask the seller to run the lift up and down a few times while you watch the cylinder and hoses closely. If it hesitates, drifts down on its own, or makes grinding noises partway through the cycle, budget for cylinder or seal work on top of the purchase price. Inspect the Posts, Arms, and Structural Welds
The steel structure is what actually keeps a vehicle in the air, so this is where you spend the most time. Walk around each post and look for rust-through, especially near the base where moisture collects. Surface rust is cosmetic; flaking rust that reveals pitted or thinned steel underneath is structural and should end the conversation. Check every weld joint on the arms and carriage for cracks, and look at the arm restraint pins and locks to confirm they engage properly at every height notch.
Also check that the posts are still straight and that the carriage doesn’t wobble excessively side to side when unloaded. A little play is normal on an older lift; a carriage that rocks noticeably usually points to worn rollers or bushings inside the post, which is a repairable but not free fix. When we do a written inspection on a used car lift for a customer, this structural section is where we spend the most time, because it’s the one category you genuinely cannot fix cheaply if it’s bad.
Test the Safety Locks and Arm Restraints Under Load
Every functioning lift has some form of mechanical safety lock that engages automatically as the lift rises, so it can’t free-fall if hydraulic pressure is lost. Ask the seller to raise the lift, then have them release the up-pressure and confirm the locks catch and hold. On many lifts you’ll hear an audible click at each notch. If the locks don’t engage, are bent, or have been bypassed or removed, do not buy that lift until it’s repaired, or negotiate the repair cost hard into your price.
This is one of the most common issues we find when inspecting a used car lift before a customer buys it, because previous owners sometimes disable a sticky lock rather than fix it. It’s a cheap fix for us to correct, but it’s also exactly the kind of thing an untrained seller will gloss over during a walkthrough. Ask About Age, Usage History, and Prior Repairs
Age alone doesn’t disqualify a lift, but usage history matters a lot. A twelve-year-old lift from a low-volume home garage that changed oil and rotated tires occasionally has led an easy life. A twelve-year-old lift pulled out of a busy commercial shop that ran three shifts a day has seen a completely different amount of wear cycles, even if it looks similarly clean on the outside. Ask directly how the lift was used and how often.
Also ask whether it’s ever been serviced, moved, or had major components replaced, and ask for any paperwork if it exists. A seller who has receipts for cable replacements or cylinder rebuilds is usually telling you the truth about the rest of the lift’s condition too. One thing we always tell people buying a used car lift: a seller’s willingness to let you inspect it thoroughly, or to have someone like us come look at it, tells you almost as much as the inspection itself.
Confirm It Matches Your Ceiling Height and Bay Space
A lift that’s mechanically perfect can still be the wrong purchase if it doesn’t fit your space. Measure your ceiling height with the vehicle you actually plan to lift factored in, not just the bare lift height, since a raised SUV or truck adds real clearance needs. Also measure floor space for post spacing and swing-arm reach, and check your slab thickness and condition, since older commercial lifts often need a specific minimum concrete depth that a typical home garage slab doesn’t meet.
Used lifts are frequently sold precisely because someone bought the wrong size for their space, so don’t repeat that mistake to save some money upfront. Factor In Installation, Permits, and Delivery Costs
The purchase price of a used car lift is never the full cost. Moving a multi-thousand-pound lift requires the right equipment and know-how, and improper transport can bend a frame or damage a cylinder before it’s even installed. Factor in delivery, and if you’re not confident doing the disassembly and reassembly yourself, factor in installation labor too. Many municipalities also require permits or inspections for lift installations, especially for commercial bays.
