What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies
The Automotive Lift Institute Gold label is third-party validation, not self-certification. To carry it, a lift model has to be tested by an independent lab — historically ETL/Intertek — against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard. That testing covers structural load capacity with a substantial safety factor, hydraulic and pneumatic system integrity, the load-holding devices, electrical safety, operator controls, and the completeness and accuracy of the installation and operating manuals. The manufacturer’s plant is also audited on an ongoing basis, so certification is not a one-time event. If a model is decertified, the label goes away.
What that means in practice is that a Gold-labeled unit has been physically loaded past its rating and did not fail, its locks were verified to hold, and its instructions were reviewed by someone with no financial stake in selling it. That is a meaningfully different claim from “meets or exceeds ANSI standards,” which is marketing language anyone can print. We give every commercial customer the same short routine, and it takes under two minutes per lift per day. Before the first vehicle: walk the lift, look under the power unit for fresh fluid, glance at the cables where they enter the columns, and cycle the lift empty to full height listening for the locks to click evenly on both columns. With a vehicle loaded, the discipline is equally simple. Raise to just above working height, lower onto the locks, and shake the vehicle before anyone gets under it. Installation Details That Decide Long-Term Safety
A Gold-certified lift installed badly is an unsafe lift. Concrete comes first: most commercial two-post units require a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength, typically four to six inches of 3,000 PSI or better depending on model and capacity, fully cured, with anchors kept a specified distance from any edge, seam, or control joint. In a lot of older Urbandale and Des Moines metro buildings, the slab is thinner than advertised or has a joint exactly where you want a column. We core-test when there is any doubt rather than guess, and when the slab is inadequate we cut and pour footings sized to spec.
