A Collector’s First Year With a Car Lift: Automotive Bay Layout for Alignment Work

A car lift automotive project we finished in eastern Nebraska last year turned into one of the better teaching stories we have, so we are going to tell it. The customer is a collector — eleven vehicles, mostly 1960s and 70s American iron, a couple of British roadsters, and a modern daily driver he uses to haul parts. He built a new 40×60 shop with in-floor heat and wanted one bay dedicated to real work: alignments, suspension rebuilds, brake jobs, and the endless fiddling that collector cars demand. What he learned in his first twelve months about bay layout, workflow, and lift selection is worth more than any spec sheet, and we watched most of it happen.

Why He Chose Four-Post Over Two-Post

His first instinct was a two-post, because that is what he had used in a friend’s shop for years. We talked him out of it, or more accurately we talked him into thinking harder. His use case was heavily weighted toward alignment work and long-duration projects — a car sitting in the air for three weeks while he rebuilt a front end. A two-post is superb for wheels-off service and it gives unmatched underside access, but it does not hold a vehicle at ride height, and it is not ideal for leaving something suspended by the frame for a month.

A four-post with an alignment package solved both problems. Runways support the car on its own suspension, which is exactly what alignment requires. Slip plates in the rear and turnplate pockets in the front give the geometry you need, and a rolling bridge jack lets him lift the wheels off the runway for brake and suspension work when he wants that. He also gained storage capability — the lift doubles as a parking spot for the roadster in winter. The tradeoff is underside access; you are working between runways rather than in open air, and on a low car that is a real constraint. He accepted it. A year in, he says the alignment capability alone justified the choice, and the storage was a bonus he now uses constantly.

Bay Layout: The 18 Inches That Mattered Most

We spent nearly two hours on the floor with chalk before a single anchor hole was drilled. The temptation with a big shop is to center everything, but centering a lift is usually wrong. What you want is a working perimeter: room on the driver’s side for a tool cart and a creeper stool, room at the front for the alignment head cabinet and a rolling bench, and room at the rear for the rolling jack to store out of the traffic path.

We ended up shifting the four-post 18 inches off center toward the north wall. That gave him a genuinely usable eight-foot aisle on the work side and just enough on the other side to walk through with a wheel in his hands. Those 18 inches changed the whole feel of the bay. We also oriented the runways so the drive-on approach faces the overhead door directly, with a straight shot of about 30 feet — enough runout that he is not fighting the steering wheel on approach, and enough room to open a door fully once the car is parked. When you plan a car lift automotive bay, think about the path of the car and the path of your body, separately. Most bad layouts are bad because someone only planned for the car. We chalked the door swing arc, the compressor line route, and the drain locations too, all before drilling.

Install Day and the Concrete Surprise

New construction usually means good concrete, and his slab was spec’d at 6 inches with rebar on 18-inch centers. It mostly was. Two of the sixteen anchor locations landed within a few inches of a control joint, which is a problem — anchors near a free edge or joint lose a significant portion of their pullout strength. We shifted the entire lift footprint four inches south to clear both.

The install ran about six hours with two techs. Layout and drilling took the first two; standing and squaring the columns took another hour; runways, cables, hydraulics, and the power unit filled the rest. Then came the part most people skip: leveling. On a four-post, the runways have to be dead level to each other and reasonably level front to back, or your alignment readings are garbage and the car wants to roll. We shimmed at the column bases, checked with a laser, and re-checked with the runways loaded. We also set and verified the cable tension so all four corners lift together — uneven cable tension is the number one cause of a four-post that racks and clunks. A car lift automotive install that skips the leveling step will haunt the owner for years, and it is nearly impossible to fix properly after the fact without dropping the whole assembly. Setting Up for Alignment Work

Alignment on a home-shop four-post is absolutely doable, and it is one of the biggest reasons collectors buy this equipment. Sending a freshly rebuilt front end out to a chain shop that does not understand a 1967 A-body’s adjustment procedure is a good way to get a car back with the caster set wrong and a scuffed fender.

What he needed: front turnplates with a pocket cut into the runway so they sit flush, rear slip plates so the rear axle can settle without binding, a level lift surface, and an alignment measuring system. He went with a camera-based system and mounted the cabinet at the front of the bay on a rolling base. The critical detail is repeatability — the lift has to return to the same level position every time, and the turnplates have to be pinned during drive-on and unpinned before measuring. He forgot the pins twice in month one and got readings that made no sense. Also worth knowing: a lot of collector cars have shim-adjusted upper control arms, which means you are up on the lift with a pry bar and a shim pack, not turning a tie rod from the floor. Plan working height accordingly. He runs his car lift automotive setup at about knee-to-waist rise for alignment work rather than full height, which puts the upper control arms right where his hands are.

Workflow Changes Nobody Predicts

The thing he did not anticipate was how a lift reorganizes the entire shop. Before, he worked wherever the car happened to sit. After, everything gravitates to the bay. His tool boxes migrated. His parts washer moved. He added a second air drop and two more outlets on the column because he was running extension cords constantly.

He also discovered a bottleneck: with one lift and eleven cars, the bay became the constraint on everything. A project car parked on the lift for three weeks meant no oil changes, no brake work, no tire swaps on anything else. His fix was a second, simpler four-post storage lift at the far end of the shop — no alignment package, just runways and a jack — so long-term projects could sit there while the main bay stayed available. That is a pattern we see a lot with collectors. If you own more than four or five vehicles, budget mentally for two lifts eventually, even if you only buy one now, and lay out the shop so the second one has a home. The other workflow lesson: drip pans. In-floor heat plus a leaky 1970s transmission equals a stained slab in about six weeks. Runway drip trays are cheap and he wishes he had bought them on day one.

First-Year Service and What Wore

At the eleven-month mark we came back for the first annual inspection, and the findings were normal but instructive. Cable tension had relaxed slightly, as it always does in the first year as the cables seat and stretch — we re-tensioned all four and re-verified level. Hydraulic fluid was down a touch from initial air bleed settling, topped off. The lock ladders showed clean engagement on all four columns with no galling.

What did show wear was the rolling jack. He used it constantly and the jack’s roller wheels had picked up debris from the runway surface, which had started to score the runway edges slightly. Easy fix — clean the runways more often and wipe the rollers — but it is the kind of thing you only learn from a year of use. We also replaced one air line fitting on the lock release that had developed a slow leak. Total service visit: under two hours, and the parts cost was trivial. That is the argument for buying a car lift automotive package from someone who stocks parts and shows up. Annual inspection on a properly installed four-post is genuinely cheap insurance, and ALI recommends it regardless of how light your usage is. What He Would Do Differently

Three things, in his words. First, he would have gone longer on the runways. He specced for his longest car at the time, then bought a long-bed pickup eight months later and now the rear tires hang past the end. Extra runway length costs a little more and takes a little more floor, and it is almost always worth it. Second, he would have run the electrical and air in conduit under the slab during construction instead of surface-mounting after. That ship sails the day the concrete cures.

Third, and this is the one we hear most often, he would have bought the rolling jack up front rather than adding it six months later as a retrofit. Buying it with the lift means it is matched to the runway spacing and the install crew sets it up and tests it as part of the job. Adding it later means measuring, ordering, and hoping. None of these are disasters. All of them are the kind of thing you only see clearly in hindsight, which is exactly why we tell other collectors his story before they order.
