A body shop foreman in Cedar Falls called us in the middle of an oil pan gasket job — engine drained, pan bolts out, technician under the vehicle — because his car lift automotive hydraulic cylinder had started weeping fluid down the column and the platform was creeping down about an inch every twenty minutes. Nothing dramatic, nothing that dumped the vehicle, but absolutely not something you work under for the four hours an oil pan gasket takes on a modern transverse V6. He wanted to know whether to order a seal kit, a whole cylinder, or a new lift. This guide is the answer we gave him, expanded into the decision tree we use on every leaking cylinder call.

Diagnose the Leak Before You Order Anything

Hydraulic fluid on a column tells you almost nothing by itself. There are four common sources and only one of them is the cylinder rod seal. Start by wiping everything dry, cycling the lift twice with no load, and then looking with a flashlight while the platform is up. If fluid appears at the top of the cylinder around the rod as it retracts, that’s the rod wiper and primary rod seal — the classic rebuild-kit scenario. If fluid weeps from a threaded port fitting, you may just need a new O-ring or a properly torqued JIC fitting, which is a fifteen-minute fix and no kit at all.

If fluid is coming from the hose crimp or a chafed spot on a hose routed over a sharp edge, replace the hose and stop chasing the cylinder. And if the leak is inside the cylinder body — the lift drifts down under load but nothing appears externally — you have a bypassing piston seal, which is a different part of the kit and sometimes a scored bore that no seal will save. On the Cedar Falls job, the weep was clearly at the rod, and the rod itself showed no pitting. That’s the best case for a car lift automotive cylinder: seals wear out, the hard parts are fine, and a kit and an afternoon puts it right.

What’s Actually Inside a Rebuild Kit

A proper cylinder seal kit is more than one rubber ring. Expect a rod wiper or dust seal that keeps grit out, a primary rod seal that holds pressure, a rod bushing or gland O-ring, a piston seal or seal set, backup rings, and often a new snap ring or gland retainer. Some manufacturers include a replacement gland nut. What kits generally do not include is the rod, the bore tube, the piston, or the velocity fuse — those are hard parts sold separately. Material matters more than people expect: polyurethane rod seals hold up better against the fine metal dust and concrete grit in a body shop than plain nitrile, and Viton is worth it if the lift runs hot or sees synthetic fluid.

Kit availability is the real variable. For current-production Rotary and Challenger two-post and four-post models, seal kits are stocked and cross-referenced cleanly by serial number. For lifts from defunct brands, or Chinese imports sold under a name that no longer exists, kits are often unavailable and you’re measuring rod diameter, bore diameter, and gland depth to build a kit from generic seal stock. We do that regularly, but it takes measurements, not guesses. Ordering a car lift automotive seal kit off a photo alone is how shops end up with three wrong kits in a drawer and a lift still down.

The Serial Tag Is the Whole Ballgame

Every parts conversation we have starts with the data tag. On a two-post it’s usually on the powerside column near the power unit; on four-posts it’s often on the inside of a runway or a leg. You want manufacturer, model, capacity, and serial number. Same model designation across different serial ranges frequently means a different cylinder — manufacturers change bore diameter, rod diameter, or gland design mid-run without renaming the product. We’ve had two 10,000 lb lifts of the identical model number, built four years apart, take entirely different seal kits.

If the tag is painted over, missing, or unreadable — extremely common on a twenty-year-old lift that’s been repainted twice — we work from measurements and photographs instead. Rod outside diameter with a caliper, bore inside diameter, overall retracted length, stroke length, port thread type and size, and clear photos of both ends of the cylinder including how it mounts. That package gets us to the right part nearly every time. The Cedar Falls foreman sent us three photos and a rod measurement from his phone and had the correct kit in hand in two days. Rebuild or Replace? The Honest Math

Seal kits are cheap — typically low to mid two figures for a common two-post cylinder, sometimes into the low three figures for large heavy-duty units. A complete replacement cylinder generally lands in the mid three figures to low four figures depending on capacity and brand. So the kit wins on price every time, but price isn’t the only input. Rebuild when the rod is smooth and unpitted, the bore is unscored, the cylinder mounts and clevis are true, and you have a technician who’s comfortable with hydraulics and a clean bench to work on.

Replace when the rod shows pitting or chrome flaking, when the bore has visible scoring you can catch a fingernail on, when the cylinder has been rebuilt once already and failed again, or when your shop simply cannot afford a bay down for a day of trial and error. On a busy body shop schedule, four hours of a tech’s time plus the risk of a second teardown often costs more than just bolting on a new cylinder. There’s also a safety dimension — a resealed cylinder still relies on the original velocity fuse and lock system, and if those are original 1998 hardware, that money might be better spent on a broader overhaul. When somebody asks us whether the whole car lift automotive unit is due for retirement, we look at structure, cables, locks, and anchors, not just the leak.

Doing the Rebuild Right: Cleanliness and Torque

Hydraulic work fails for two reasons: contamination and improper reassembly. Before you crack a cylinder open, fully lower the lift, block it mechanically, relieve pressure, and cap the lines. Work on a clean bench with clean rags — not shop towels that have wiped brake dust. When you pull the gland, note the exact orientation of every seal; rod seals are directional and installing one backwards produces a leak that looks identical to the one you just fixed. Lubricate new seals with the same fluid the system uses, never with grease, and never force a seal past a sharp snap ring groove without a seal installation sleeve or a smooth taper.

On reassembly, torque the gland to spec and no more. Overtightened glands distort the seal and score the rod, which turns a seal job into a cylinder purchase. Refill with the correct fluid — most lifts want ISO 32 or AW-32 hydraulic oil, and some older units specified ATF, so check the manual rather than assuming. Bleed thoroughly by cycling the lift several times through full travel with no load, watching for spongy movement. Then load-test at a fraction of capacity before you put a real vehicle overhead. Finally, verify the safety locks engage on every notch and that the lift holds position for at least fifteen minutes with load. A rebuilt car lift automotive cylinder that hasn’t been load-tested is not a finished job.

Preventing the Next Leak

Cylinder seals in an Iowa body shop die from contamination and neglect far more often than from hours of use. Sanding dust, primer overspray, and road salt carried in on vehicles all end up on the exposed rod, and every cycle drags some of it past the wiper. Wiping the rods down with a clean rag once a week costs nothing and roughly doubles seal life in our experience. Keeping the fluid clean matters just as much: check the reservoir level monthly, look for milky discoloration that means water intrusion, and change the fluid every few years rather than never.

The other big one is alignment. A four-post with uneven cable tension or a two-post with columns out of plumb puts side load on the cylinder rod, and side load kills seals. If you’re replacing seals every eighteen months, the seals aren’t the problem — go check plumb, cable equalization, and cylinder mount condition. We see this constantly on lifts that were installed by whoever had a hammer drill that day. An annual inspection catches all of it.
