Start With the Work, Not the Brochure
Every bad lift purchase we’ve been called out to fix started the same way: somebody picked a model off a spec sheet before mapping out what the bay actually does all day. If your shop lives on brake service and rotor swaps, your priorities are different from a transmission shop’s. Brake work means constant up-and-down cycling, techs standing under the vehicle at chest height for twenty minutes at a stretch, and wheels coming off — which means you want unobstructed access to all four corners and a lift that raises fast enough that nobody’s standing around.
That pushes most brake-heavy shops toward a clear-floor asymmetric two-post in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range. The asymmetric arm layout lets the tech open the driver’s door without banging the column, which matters when you’re pulling a wheel-speed sensor connector or setting a parking brake. We had a northeast Iowa shop insist on a 4-post because they liked the drive-on convenience — then discovered that wheels-free brake work meant buying rolling jacks on top of it and adding thirty seconds of setup to every job. They ended up adding two-posts the next year. Match the equipment to the ticket you write most often, and the rest of the decision gets easier.
Capacity Math for Brake and Chassis Work
Rated capacity is not a suggestion, and it’s not the curb weight of the heaviest truck you’ve ever seen in the lot. The rule we give shops: take your heaviest realistic vehicle, add payload, add a safety cushion, and buy the next tier up. A crew-cab three-quarter-ton diesel with a topper and a bed full of tools is pushing 9,000 lb before anybody sits in it. A 10,000 lb hoist handles it, but it handles it at the top of its range every single time — and the pads, cables, and cylinders wear accordingly.
We had an email come through with nothing in the body but “7,000 lb. Lift” and two photos of a hoist in a small independent shop. That number told us the whole story: the shop had bought light years ago and was now servicing vehicles the equipment was never sized for. Anything at 7,000 lb is a passenger-car hoist, and passenger cars aren’t what rolls into an Iowa shop anymore. For a general repair or body shop doing brakes on everything from Civics to F-250s, 12,000 lb is the sweet spot in today’s market — the price gap over 10,000 lb is smaller than most owners expect, and the extra headroom in the arms and columns pays for itself in service life. If you’re regularly seeing one-tons and duallies, look at a heavier column or a four-post rated above 14,000 lb.
Ceiling, Floor, and the Two Numbers Nobody Measures
Before we quote anything, we ask for two measurements: finished ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, and concrete thickness. Shops guess on both and it costs them. A standard clear-floor two-post overhead model needs roughly 12 feet of clearance to run a truck to full rise; if your building tops out at 10 feet 6 inches, you’re looking at a baseplate model where the crossbar runs along the floor instead of overhead. That’s a perfectly good hoist, but it changes how you sweep the bay and where you route air lines.
Concrete is the one that bites people. Most two-post manufacturers spec a minimum of 4 to 4-1/4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of older northeast Iowa buildings have 3-1/2 inches poured over questionable base with control joints in exactly the wrong place. We core-test when there’s doubt. If the slab won’t hold, the fix is cutting out a pad section per column and pouring proper footings — a day of work and a real line item, but far cheaper than an anchor pulling out with a loaded truck overhead. Get this settled during the buying conversation, not the morning the freight truck shows up. Our installers would rather pour concrete in advance than reschedule an install because the floor failed a pull test.
Financing Terms: How Shops Actually Pay for This
Very few of the shops we work with write a single check. Most use one of three routes, and understanding them ahead of time gives you leverage. Equipment financing through a lender that specializes in shop tools is the most common — terms usually run 36 to 60 months, with the equipment itself serving as collateral, so you’re not pledging the building. Rates track your credit and time in business, and a shop with three-plus years of returns and clean paper generally lands in the reasonable range. Watch for documentation fees and prepayment penalties buried in the back page.
The second route is a lease with a dollar buyout at term end, which some owners prefer because payments may be treated as an operating expense — talk to your accountant, not to us, on the tax side. The third is a local bank line of credit, which northeast Iowa shops with long banking relationships often get cheaper than any national equipment lender. On our end, we structure payment on a schedule that maps to the job: a deposit that covers the freight and the hardware, the balance due at commissioning after the hoist has been cycled, tested, and signed off. We don’t ask for the full amount before a lift is bolted to your floor and lifting a vehicle. That’s how a car lift automotive purchase should be paid for, and if a supplier wants everything up front before you’ve seen the equipment work, that tells you something.
What a Car Lift Automotive Quote Should Actually Include
A quote with one line and one number is a red flag. When we price a job, the sheet breaks out the hoist itself, freight to your dock or door, anchors and hardware, installation labor, and any concrete or electrical work we’ve identified. Electrical is the item most often left off by online sellers: a two-post typically wants a dedicated 208–230V single-phase circuit, and your electrician’s bill for a new run across the shop is real money that belongs in the budget from day one.
Also ask what happens after the install. Our number includes the initial ANSI/ALI-style inspection and cycle test, the operator walkthrough with your techs, and the documentation you’ll want on file if OSHA or your insurance carrier asks. Ask whether the seller stocks parts for what they’re selling you — arm pins, cable assemblies, lock ladders, cylinders, and slider blocks. We stock those, and that’s the difference between a two-day repair and a three-week wait for a container. New, Used, and the Trap in the Middle
Used hoists come through northeast Iowa constantly — dealership remodels, shops closing, auctions. Some are genuine bargains. Most aren’t, and here’s how to tell the difference. A used Rotary or Challenger from a known shop, with the data plate intact, model and serial legible, and all original safety components present, is worth looking at. We can pull parts for those all day and we know the geometry. Budget for new cables, new arm restraint gears, fresh anchors, and a full hydraulic service — call it a meaningful chunk of what you saved.
The trap is the mid-tier import with no legible data plate and no importer still in business. We’ve been asked to service those, and there’s nothing to service with: no parts, no torque specs, no lock geometry documentation, no ALI certification on record. Insurance carriers have started asking questions about uncertified equipment, and a body shop foreman does not want to explain to an adjuster why the hoist that dropped a customer’s car has no traceable paperwork.
