Start With the Job, Not the Brochure
Everybody starts by shopping capacity. We would rather you start by describing the work. A weekend mechanic doing exhaust and driveline access has a completely different requirement than someone who mostly wants winter storage. Exhaust work means you need the whole underside open from the manifold flange back to the tailpipe hanger, and you need to be able to swing a cutoff wheel and a welder without a runway in your face. Driveline work — U-joints, carrier bearings, dropping a transmission crossmember — has the same demand. That pushes almost every hobbyist toward a two-post configuration, because the underbody is genuinely clear.
A four-post has real advantages: no slab anchoring drama, drive-on convenience, great for storage stacking. But the runways sit right where your exhaust pipe lives, and a rolling jack adds cost and complexity. We had a hobbyist in the south metro who bought a four-post from a big-box catalog because it was on sale, then called us four months later asking what it would take to swap. The answer was a lot of money he did not need to spend. So the first line on any car lift automotive checklist is honest: write down the five jobs you actually plan to do in the next two years, and let those choose the configuration for you.
Measure Your Ceiling Before You Measure Anything Else
Ceiling height kills more garage projects than budget does. A standard two-post with an overhead beam wants roughly twelve feet of clear height to give you full rise on a truck. Most attached garages built in the Des Moines metro in the last thirty years give you somewhere between nine and ten feet at the truss bottom, and a fair number of older homes in Beaverdale or the East Village give you eight. That does not mean you are out of luck — it means you need to know the number before you shop.

The Slab Is the Part Nobody Checks
We will not anchor a two-post to concrete we have not verified, and neither should any installer you hire. Manufacturer specs for a 10,000 lb two-post typically call for four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, unreinforced-but-sound, cured at least 28 days, with adequate distance from any control joint or slab edge. A lot of residential garage slabs in central Iowa were poured at three and a half inches over a questionable base, with wire mesh that ended up on the bottom instead of the middle. Some were poured with a drainage slope that puts one column half an inch lower than the other.
Checking it is not exotic. We core or hammer-drill a test hole, measure the actual thickness, and look at what comes out of the hole — good aggregate versus sandy junk tells you a lot. If the slab comes up short, the fix is a cut-out and a reinforced footing pad under each column, usually a weekend of work and a manageable cost compared to replacing the whole floor. Skipping this step is how you end up with anchor bolts that pull under load, and that is the failure mode nobody walks away from casually. Anyone selling you a car lift automotive package who does not ask about your concrete is not thinking about your safety.
Power, Air, and the Boring Utilities
Most single-phase two-post power units in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range run on 208-230V single phase and want a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Your garage probably has a 20-amp 120V circuit shared with the freezer and the door opener. Budget for an electrician. In the Des Moines metro that is typically a few hundred to just over a thousand dollars depending on panel distance, whether you need a subpanel, and how much drywall has to come down. Get that quote before you commit to the lift, not after.
Also think about placement relative to your compressor and your lighting. Once a vehicle is at chest height, the overhead fixtures that lit your floor beautifully are now shining on the roof of the car and leaving the underside in shadow. Cheap LED shop lights on the column sides or a couple of magnetic work lights solve it for very little money, but plan for it. Same with air: a quick-connect mounted at column height beats dragging a hose up from the floor every time. And leave yourself a clear path for the power unit hose routing so you are not stepping over it a hundred times a week. Financing Terms and Payment Schedule
Here is the part most articles skip. A quality two-post from a real manufacturer with real parts support lands in the mid four figures for the equipment, plus install, plus electrical, plus whatever concrete work is needed. Cheap imports exist for less, and we service enough of them to tell you honestly that parts availability three years out is where they hurt you. When a cable or a cylinder fails on an orphan brand, you are hunting eBay. When it fails on a Rotary or a Challenger, we have it on the shelf.
On payment structure: we typically take a deposit at order — commonly a third — with the balance due at delivery or on completion of the install, and we spell that out in writing before anything ships. Manufacturer-backed financing through equipment lenders is available and generally runs 24 to 60 month terms, though hobbyists buying under a personal name rather than a business will see different underwriting than a shop does. Some of our residential customers do better with a home equity line or a 0% promotional card and a hard plan to pay it off inside the promo window. What we tell everyone is the same: do not stretch the term so far that you are still paying on the lift when it needs its first cable set. Get the total installed number — equipment, freight, install, electrical, concrete contingency — before you sign anything.
Installation, Inspection, and Who Actually Signs Off
Self-installing is legal and plenty of capable people do it. What we see go wrong is not the assembly — it is the plumb, the shimming, the anchor torque sequence, and the cable and equalizer adjustment. A two-post that is a quarter inch out of plumb will bind in the carriage tracks and chew through slide blocks. Anchors torqued to feel instead of spec either do not seat or crack the concrete around them. Equalization cables set loose let one carriage drift, and that is exactly the complaint we get on service calls: “one side comes up faster than the other.”
Whether we install it or you do, get it inspected. ANSI/ALI standards call for annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and while nobody is issuing citations at a residential garage, the inspection is genuinely useful — it catches worn slide blocks, frayed cable, weeping cylinder seals and cracked arm pins before they become incidents. Check whether your homeowner’s policy has anything to say about the equipment too; most do not care, but a few have exclusions worth reading. And keep the manual. What to Ask Before You Hand Over a Deposit
Print this and take it to whoever is selling you the lift. What is the exact model and capacity, and is that capacity per vehicle or per arm pair? Are the arms asymmetric or symmetric, and which one suits how you will park? Then the support questions. Who stocks parts for this brand, and are cables, cylinders, slide blocks and lock ladders available off the shelf or on order from overseas? Who in Iowa services it if the power unit dies in February? Is there a written warranty on structure, on the power unit, and on labor, and how long is each? What is the deposit and payment schedule in writing? Getting straight answers to those questions tells you more about a supplier than any spec sheet.
