Decision Node One: What Service Does Your Building Have
Before you shop any car lift automotive product, walk to your electrical panel and read the label. If it says 100-amp or 200-amp with a single main breaker and two hot legs, you are on single-phase 240V (nominally 220V for older nomenclature). This is the standard residential and light-commercial service across Iowa. If it says three phases, or if you see three main breakers and three hot legs, you are on three-phase, either 208V or 480V. Read the exact voltage off the panel label; do not guess.
Ninety percent of Waterloo-area restoration shops are on single-phase 240V. That is fine, and every major lift brand makes a 240V single-phase 2-post. Ten percent, usually shops in older commercial buildings or shops that grew out of a Cedar Valley industrial building, are on three-phase 208V or 480V. Those shops have more options and slightly cheaper motor cost per horsepower. If you are on 480V three-phase, most lift motors run 208V or 240V, so you need a transformer or a lift that accepts 480V direct. That is a spec question we ask on every quote.
Decision Node Two: Motor Sizing and Amp Draw
A 10,000 lb 2-post lift typically runs a 2 or 3 HP motor. On single-phase 240V, that draws roughly 15 to 22 amps at full load. On three-phase 208V, the same motor draws around 9 to 14 amps because the three-phase power delivery is more efficient. For a restoration shop lifting the same vehicle a hundred times over the course of a restoration, the three-phase advantage is real but not huge. If you have three-phase, use it. If you do not, do not spend eight thousand dollars adding a phase converter just to save a couple amps on lift cycles.
The circuit you need to install is not the same as the motor’s full-load amps. NEC code requires the circuit to be sized at 125 percent of the motor’s continuous load, which for a 22-amp lift motor means a 30-amp breaker on 10-gauge wire minimum. Talk to your electrician; do not eyeball this. When we deliver a car lift automotive setup to a shop, we confirm the circuit is in place and correctly sized before we energize the motor. Under-sizing the circuit is the number-one cause of motor failures we see in the first two years.
Decision Node Three: Rotary Phase Converter, Yes or No
Some shops without three-phase service want to run a three-phase lift because they already own three-phase equipment (a rotary phase converter for a lathe, a mill, or a compressor). If that is your situation, you can absolutely use the same converter to run a three-phase lift motor. Sizing the converter is straightforward: use a rotary phase converter rated at least 1.5 times the lift motor’s horsepower. A 3 HP lift wants a 5 HP converter minimum.
However. If you do not already own a phase converter, do not buy one just for the lift. The convert-to-run-three-phase route costs more than buying a single-phase-native lift, and single-phase 2-post lifts perform identically in day-to-day use for a restoration shop. Only go three-phase if you already have the service running. Otherwise, single-phase is the answer and it costs less to install.
Decision Node Four: Budget Tier Meets Configuration
Now the money side. Restoration shops usually spend more per lift than a general repair shop because the lift will hold the same 1968 Camaro for six months and the shop wants a lift that is a pleasure to work under, not a lift that is barely adequate. Entry tier restoration lifts run around the price of a used pickup. Mid tier around the price of a new sub-compact car. Premium tier around the price of a new mid-size sedan. These are honest ranges and we do not publish exact dollars because they change quarterly with steel pricing.

That gets you the reach for tucking a Mustang II front subframe up close to the column, the capacity for a full-frame Chevy Suburban, and a lift the tech will still be proud of in year ten. Decision Node Five: Cable-Driven or Chain-Driven Equalization
Restoration shops care about the equalization system because they will spend more time under the lift than any general repair shop. Equalization is what keeps both columns rising at the same rate so the vehicle stays level. Cable-driven lifts use two hydraulic cylinders and a steel cable to sync the columns. Chain-driven lifts use two cylinders and a roller chain. Direct-drive lifts use two independent cylinders with no equalization. Direct-drive is cheap and drifts.
Cable-driven is the industry standard and what we recommend for restoration work. Cables are inspected annually and replaced every five to seven years depending on cycle count. Chain-driven is common on some Chinese-import 2-posts and works but stretches over time. Decision Node Six: Suspension and Shock Workflow
The Waterloo restoration shops we work with spend a lot of hours on suspension and shock replacement. Springs come off, shocks come off, control arms come off, sometimes the entire subframe comes off. Two things about the lift matter for this workflow. First, arm reach and the ability to spot the vehicle so the front wheels hang free at the correct spot for spring compressor work. Second, lift height. If you cannot get the wheels up to eye level, you are compressing springs on your knees, which is slow and hard on the body.
Restoration lifts want a maximum lift height of at least seventy-two inches to the top of the pad. That puts the pinch weld at about eighty inches and gives a six-foot tech clear standing room underneath. Cheap 2-post lifts often top out at sixty-seven or sixty-eight inches, which is a real ergonomic problem for a tall tech. The car lift automotive spec that gets suspension work right is a full-rise 2-post, not a mid-rise. Ask for the max lift-to-pad height number and compare it against your tallest tech’s comfortable working posture.
Decision Node Seven: Getting the Install Right in Northeast Iowa
Once you have followed the decision tree, the last node is install execution. For northeast Iowa, we roll a truck from Ames the day of install and complete a 2-post in six to eight hours on a prepared site. Prepared site means concrete is confirmed adequate, the 240V circuit is in place, the ceiling clearance is checked, and the bay is cleared of clutter. If any of those four are not in place, the install slips and we go home for the day. That is a real cost we build into our quotes because sending a crew home is expensive.
