Why the Building Came Before the Equipment
The single best decision this owner made was calling before the concrete truck showed up. He had a set of pole-building plans, a rough idea of where the overhead door would land, and no lift picked out yet. That order of operations is backwards from what most people do, and it’s the right way around. Slab thickness, mesh or rebar layout, control-side clearance, and the location of floor drains all get locked in the day the concrete cures. Changing them afterward means saw-cutting and pouring footings, which is a real expense and a bad look in a finished garage.
We told him what we tell everyone building new: pour a minimum of four inches at 3,000 PSI for a four-post, and go thicker if there’s any chance a two-post ends up in the same building later. He went with five inches across the whole floor and six under the two bays he’d flagged. Ceiling height mattered just as much. He wanted to store a lifted pickup over a low sports car, and that stack needs more room than people assume once you account for the runway height, the vehicle on top, and a little breathing space so nobody scrapes a roofline pulling out. We measured backward from the tallest vehicle he owned and told him where to set the trusses. He added eight inches to our number. Choosing Between Storage and Service Duty
He started the conversation wanting a pure storage lift, then talked himself into service duty halfway through, then almost talked himself back out. That’s normal. A storage-focused four-post is optimized for parking: closer runway spacing, simpler deck, and a price that reflects it. A service-oriented four-post has wider runways, a rolling bridge jack option, drip trays, and a caster kit so you can move it if the building layout changes.
His actual use case settled it. He wanted to do his own oil changes and fluid service, which means getting under the car with a drain pan and a filter wrench, and he wanted to pull wheels occasionally. Pure storage decks make that awkward. Adding a rolling jack later is possible, but retrofitting one onto a deck that wasn’t spec’d for it usually means buying a jack that doesn’t quite match the runway. It’s also slow and hard on the motor over time, and we’d rather see a dedicated 220V single-phase drop on anything doing regular duty cycles.
He had an electrician out the following week to add the 220 line, and the difference in lift speed was immediate enough that he mentioned it unprompted a year later. If you’re sequencing a garage build, run that circuit while the walls are open. Pulling wire through finished drywall costs more than the wire is worth. The other install-day surprise was smaller but worth flagging: his floor had a slight slope toward the overhead door for drainage, which is good building practice and a mild nuisance for a four-post. We shimmed the low-side columns to bring the runways level, which is completely standard, but it’s the kind of thing a DIY installer discovers at 4 p.m. with no shim stock on hand. The First Six Months of Oil Changes and Fluid Service

Drain plug access on a runway lift means you’re working between the rails, and depending on the vehicle, the pan may sit close enough to a runway that a standard drain pan doesn’t fit cleanly underneath. Filter access was the second lesson. Cartridge filters on the top of the engine are easy either way, but spin-on filters tucked behind a subframe are much easier from underneath at chest height than from a creeper. That’s the whole reason he bought the thing, and he says it delivered. What he underestimated was how much time he’d spend on fluid service that isn’t oil — differential fluid on the older cars, transfer case on the truck, brake bleeds. All of that got dramatically easier. By month six he’d stopped taking anything to a shop except tire mounting and alignments. The one habit we pushed him to adopt: check the lock engagement audibly on every cycle before you go underneath. Not visually, audibly. Four locks should click. If you only hear three, come back down and figure out why before you put a wrench in your hand.
Maintenance, Cables, and the 12-Month Check
We came back at the one-year mark for an inspection, which is what we recommend on any residential four-post that sees regular use. Storage-only units can stretch to eighteen months. Anything doing service work should be on an annual cycle, and shops running commercial hours should be on ANSI-schedule inspections more often than that.
What we found was unremarkable and that’s the point. Cable tension had settled slightly, which is completely normal in the first year as the equalizer cables seat and the sheaves wear in. We re-equalized so all four corners lift together, checked the cable ends for broken strands at the terminations where they almost always show up first, greased the sheaves, and topped the hydraulic reservoir. Total time on site was under two hours. What He’d Do Differently on a Second Building
We asked him straight out: if you built the shop again tomorrow, what changes? Three answers came fast. First, more ceiling. He added eight inches over our recommendation and still wishes he’d added twelve, because he’s since bought a taller vehicle. Ceiling height is the one dimension you can never add later without a crane and a contractor.
Second, he’d run the 220V circuit during framing instead of after. That’s a couple hundred dollars of wire and an hour of an electrician’s time when the walls are open, versus a real project once the drywall’s up and painted. Third — and this one surprised us — he’d have poured a wider apron outside the overhead door. Not a lift issue directly, but backing a car onto a four-post requires a straight approach, and his approach angle is tight enough that he does a three-point turn every time.
