An RV and trailer service shop near Dubuque brought us in two winters ago because their seasonal storage business had outgrown jack stands. What followed was a first year with a few surprises, one genuinely avoidable mistake, and a lift that has now been through two Iowa winters without complaint. Month Zero: Surveying an Old Building’s Electrical Service

The first visit was ninety minutes with a flashlight and a phone camera. The building had a 200-amp single-phase service, which sounds like plenty until you inventory what is already hanging off it: a two-stage compressor, a parts washer, a welder that gets used more than anyone admits, and fluorescent lighting the length of a forty-foot bay. Three-phase was available at the street, but bringing it in meant a utility coordination job with a transformer and a new service entrance. The quote for that alone was more than the lift.

So single-phase it was, and honestly that was the right answer. A four-post lift running a 220V single-phase power unit on a dedicated 30-amp circuit does not tax a 200-amp service in any meaningful way, because the motor only runs during the raise — maybe forty seconds. It is the duty cycle, not the peak draw, that determines whether a panel is stressed, and a storage-and-service operation raises vehicles a handful of times a day, not fifty. We had the electrician confirm spare capacity with a load calculation rather than eyeballing it, which cost the shop a small service fee and eliminated the question permanently. That calculation is the single best money any car lift automotive buyer in an older building can spend.

The Mistake: Guessing the Power Unit Location

Here is the one we would do differently. During planning, the shop assumed the power unit would go on the driver’s-side column because that is where the wall was. When the crate arrived, the lift shipped configured for the opposite side, and the hydraulic hose routing plus the electrical stub-up had already been set in the trench. We made it work — hoses can be rerouted and a junction box can be relocated — but it cost most of an afternoon and some conduit.

The lesson is small and dumb and extremely common: confirm the power unit side in writing on the order, then have the electrician stub up on that side and nowhere else. Same goes for the disconnect. Code wants a means of disconnect within sight of the equipment, and if you put it behind where the vehicle parks, you have created an annoyance you will live with for a decade. We now walk the bay with tape on the floor marking columns, power unit, disconnect, and air drop before anyone breaks concrete. It adds twenty minutes to a site visit. It has saved us far more than that on every install since, on both service and storage-focused equipment.

Install Week: Concrete in a 1950s Slab

Old Dubuque commercial slabs are a coin flip. This one core-tested at just over five inches of decent concrete in most of the bay, but the section closest to the overhead door had been cut and patched years earlier for a drain, and the patch was thin and poorly bonded. We shifted the lift layout four feet north to land all four columns on original slab, which was possible only because we tested before we drilled.

Four-post lifts are more forgiving than two-posts on concrete because the load spreads across four base plates rather than concentrating in two columns fighting a tipping moment. Some four-post models are even rated for use on adequate slab without anchoring at all, though we anchor anyway when the lift is going to live in one place — it eliminates walking and keeps the runways square over time. Anchors go in at the manufacturer’s specified embedment and torque, with a torque wrench, not a rattle gun and a feeling. Seasonal Storage: What the Lift Changed

The business case here was storage. Between October and April, the shop stores customer boats, small trailers, and a handful of collector vehicles. Before the lift, everything sat on the floor and they were capacity-limited by square footage. With a four-post and a caster kit, they can park a vehicle on the runways, roll another underneath, and effectively double the footprint of one bay for the storage season.

Two things they learned. First, ceiling height is the real constraint, not lift capacity. Their clear height allowed a compact car or small trailer underneath a raised vehicle, but not a truck under a truck. Measure your actual clear height to the lowest obstruction — sprinkler heads, conduit, the garage door track when it is open — and subtract before you fantasize about stacking. Second, a stored vehicle sitting on the locks for six months is fine mechanically, but tires flat-spot and batteries die. They now put a tender on anything stored more than a month. None of that is a car lift automotive problem, but it is the kind of thing you only learn in year one.

The First Service Call: A Rolling Jack and a Lock Adjustment

About eight months in, we got the call. Two symptoms: the rolling jack was not lifting evenly, and one corner of the lift was dropping onto its lock with a noticeable clunk while the other three settled quietly. Both turned out to be adjustment rather than failure, which is typical of first-year service calls on a four-post.

The rolling jack needed bleeding — air had worked into the air-over-hydraulic circuit, which happens with intermittent use and is a fifteen-minute fix once you know the procedure. The lock timing was a cable equalization issue. Four-post lifts use cables to keep the runways level, and cables stretch during the first months of service. Re-tensioning brought all four locks into simultaneous engagement, which is what you want because uneven lock engagement means one corner is carrying more than its share. We tell every four-post owner to expect one cable adjustment in the first year and to check tension annually after that. What Year One Cost, In Ranges

Because people always ask, here is the shape of the spend. A quality 9,000 to 14,000 lb four-post from a name we stock lands in the mid-four-figure to low-five-figure range depending on capacity, runway length, and height. The rolling jack and caster kit added a meaningful but not shocking amount — think low four figures combined. Electrical came in modest because single-phase was already available: a dedicated circuit, a disconnect, and conduit, all under a thousand in most of eastern Iowa unless the run is long.

Freight and installation are the two line items people underestimate. A crated four-post is heavy and awkward, delivery to a Dubuque address needs a liftgate or a forklift on site, and installation labor for a properly leveled and cable-tensioned four-post is a full day for two people. Concrete testing was a few hundred dollars and, in this case, saved them from anchoring into a bad patch — the best money in the whole project. Overall, plan on the equipment being roughly seventy percent of the total and the remainder going to site work, freight, and labor. Shops that budget that way finish on plan. Shops that spend it all on the equipment stall out halfway through.

What We Would Tell the Next Dubuque Shop

Start with the panel, not the catalog. The single most useful hour you can spend is with an electrician doing a real load calculation and telling you whether a dedicated 30-amp 220V circuit is available and where it can land. If three-phase is already in the building, use it — the motors last longer and start easier. If it is not, do not chase it. Bringing in new three-phase service for one lift almost never pencils out for a small shop.

Then confirm three physical things before anyone drills: clear ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and quality where the columns land, and which side the power unit lives on. Get all three in writing. After that, a car lift automotive install is a fairly boring process, which is exactly what you want. The Dubuque shop is heading into its third winter now with a lift that has needed one adjustment visit and nothing else, and their storage capacity effectively doubled in one bay.
