A trailer and RV service shop in Waukee called us in late winter with a problem we hear constantly from that side of the industry: they were doing CV axle and half-shaft replacements on tow vehicles, Sprinter-based motorhomes, and customer pickups entirely on jack stands, in a building with a tall overhead door and a ceiling that looked plenty high until you actually measured it. They wanted a car lift automotive install that wouldn’t compromise the door they use every day to roll fifth-wheels through. What followed was a full year of install, adjustment, and first-service lessons that we think are worth writing down, because ceiling height and door swing kill more lift projects in west Des Moines metro shops than budget ever does.

The Measurement That Changed the Whole Plan

The shop owner told us he had “about fourteen feet.” We showed up with a laser and measured 13 feet 2 inches to the underside of the steel at the location he wanted the lift — but only 11 feet 4 inches to the bottom of the overhead door track, and the sectional door panels stacked back another eight inches below that when open. His planned position put one column directly under the open door stack. That’s the single most common miss we find. People measure ceiling and forget the door lives in that space for most of the workday.

The other constraint was a sprinkler main running crosswise about nine feet up, roughly where a clearfloor two-post overhead beam would have gone. So a standard clearfloor was out at that spot. We ended up siting the lift one bay over, out from under the door stack, and specifying a shorter-column configuration with the overhead crossbar set below the sprinkler line. Total rise dropped a few inches from the tall version, which for CV axle work is completely irrelevant — you need the wheels off the ground and a comfortable working height, not maximum reach. Getting the geometry right on any car lift automotive project starts with three numbers: finished ceiling, lowest obstruction, and door-open stack height. Measure all three at the exact intended column locations.

Clearfloor vs Baseplate for RV and Trailer Bays

For shops rolling long trailers in and out, the baseplate-versus-clearfloor decision is not academic. A clearfloor two-post keeps the floor completely open — nothing to roll a trailer jack or tandem axle over — but puts a beam overhead. A baseplate model moves the hydraulic and cable runs into a low crossover at floor level, which frees up all the vertical space but leaves a raised strip roughly two to three inches tall between the columns.

In RV and trailer service, that strip is a real annoyance. Tongue jacks, dollies, and floor jacks all hate it, and if you drag a fifth-wheel pin box across it you’ll damage something. But when the ceiling truly won’t accommodate an overhead beam, baseplate is the honest answer, and plenty of shops live with a ramp fabricated over the crossover. For this Waukee shop, the clearfloor worked once we relocated the lift, so they got the open floor. We generally recommend clearfloor whenever ceiling and obstructions allow, and we’ll say so even if the baseplate is a cheaper install. The wrong choice here doesn’t fail — it just irritates your techs eight hours a day for fifteen years, which is arguably worse.

Install Week: Anchors, Shims, and Getting Columns Plumb

Install itself took two days. Day one was layout, core-testing the slab (5 inches, good pour, no rebar conflicts at the anchor locations), drilling, setting anchors, and standing columns. Day two was overhead assembly, cable and hose routing, hydraulic fill, bleed, and cycling. The part nobody photographs is shimming. Almost no shop floor is level enough for a two-post to go up plumb without shims under a baseplate, and getting the columns plumb is what makes the carriages travel smoothly and the arms stay put under load.

We use manufacturer-supplied shim plates, never random washers, and we don’t exceed the stack limit in the manual — beyond that the anchor loses effective embedment and you’ve created a hazard. Once plumb, we cycled the lift a dozen times empty, checked equalization cable tension, verified both locks engaged audibly at every position, and then loaded it with a real vehicle and cycled again. Torque on anchors gets rechecked after that load cycle, which is a step some installers skip. Anchors seat and relax. If nobody comes back to retorque, you get a column that walks a fraction over the next few months. A properly commissioned car lift automotive install includes that second torque pass, and we document it so the shop has a record for their insurer and OSHA file.

Why CV Axle Work Rewards Arm Geometry

Half-shaft and CV axle replacement is a job where lift geometry matters more than capacity. You’re working directly at the wheel with the suspension hanging free, wrestling an axle out of a hub and an intermediate shaft or transaxle. You want unobstructed access at the wheel wells and nothing between you and the inner joint. That means asymmetric arms with three-stage front arms and telescoping rears, positioned so the arm bodies sit well behind the front wheel opening.

On the Sprinter-chassis motorhomes this shop sees, the front lift points are close together and the vehicle is nose-heavy, so arm reach and pad height became the deciding spec. They ended up needing tall stack adapters for a couple of chassis and low-profile pads for lowered tow vehicles — both cheap accessories that nobody thinks about until the first awkward vehicle rolls in. Buy the adapter set with the lift. It costs a fraction of the equipment and saves you from stacking wood blocks, which we’ve seen more times than we’d like. Nine months in, the shop’s tech told us the CV work that used to eat three hours on stands was down to about seventy minutes, and they stopped turning those jobs away. That’s the actual return on a car lift automotive purchase — not the lift, the jobs you can now say yes to.

Door Swing, Traffic Flow, and the Bay Layout Nobody Plans

Once the lift went in, the shop discovered a second-order problem: their bay traffic pattern was built around dragging trailers straight through, and a two-post in the middle of a bay changes that. Columns are fixed. A trailer that used to swing through now needs a two-point turn, and the tech door on the north wall swung open into the drive path of the lift’s approach.

They rehung that door to swing the other way — a forty-dollar fix that should have been part of the original plan. We now walk through door swings, air drop locations, and tool cart paths during the site survey, because we’ve watched too many shops put a lift exactly where the manual said and then fight their own building forever. Think about where the tech stands, where the parts cart lives, where the drain pan goes, and whether the compressor line reaches. Also consider column side: put the columns on the side where the power unit won’t block a walkway. In a mixed RV and automotive shop where some vehicles are 40 feet long and some are 15, mock the whole thing up with tape on the floor before you drill. An hour of tape saves a year of annoyance. We’d rather spend that hour with you than come back and move anchors.

First-Year Maintenance and the Rolling Jack Question

At the six-month mark we came back for the first service. Findings were typical and undramatic: hydraulic fluid slightly low from initial bleed settling, one arm restraint gear needing adjustment, lock latches lubricated, cables checked for tension and broken strands, anchors retorqued. Total time about ninety minutes. That’s what an annual inspection looks like when the install was done right, and ANSI/ALI guidance calls for annual inspection by a qualified inspector — something insurers increasingly ask about.

The rolling jack question came up too, which is common. On four-post lifts a rolling jack is essential for wheels-off work, and we field plenty of Challenger four-post rolling jack and lift adjustment calls from shops that bought the lift and skipped the jack. On a two-post you don’t need one, but this shop did add a portable mid-rise for quick tire and brake jobs on tow vehicles, which turned out to be their best second purchase. If you’re building out a bay, the sequencing we’d recommend is: get the primary two-post right, run it for a season, then add capacity based on what actually bottlenecks. What We’d Tell the Next Waukee Shop

And buy a brand with a parts pipeline — on the commercial side that means Rotary or Challenger for us, and for lighter-duty and home applications BendPak or Atlas. We say that not as brand loyalty but because in fifteen years someone will need a cable or a cylinder seal kit, and orphaned equipment becomes scrap. The Waukee shop’s first year went smoothly not because the equipment was exotic but because the three constraints got measured before anything was ordered. That’s genuinely the whole trick.
