A collector living near the Iowa-Nebraska border called us with a garage he’d just finished building and a car lift automotive plan that was mostly right but a little wrong. He’d sized the building around a lift he thought he wanted and hadn’t quite thought through the bay layout. Twelve months later, after one install, one layout revision, and his first differential fluid service on the new lift, he has a bay he’d rebuild the same way. This piece is his first-year story: install day, layout choices, differential service on the new setup, and what he’d change if he did it again. Why bay layout matters more than model choice

Most collectors focus on which car lift automotive brand and model they want and skip the harder question: where in the shop does it go, and what does the workflow around it look like? Model choice is important. Bay layout is more important. A great lift in a bad bay is annoying to use every day. A good lift in a great bay is a joy for twenty years. The collector near the Iowa-Nebraska border learned this the moderately-hard way. He’d put the lift too close to the side wall in his initial layout, and while it worked, it wasn’t ideal for loading his longer cars. Six months in he had us return, unbolt the lift, move it eight feet toward the center of the shop, and reset. That’s a real thing to plan around before your first install. Install day and the first layout

Install went cleanly. His shop had a 6″ engineered concrete pour with in-floor radiant heat (we mapped the heat lines carefully before drilling anchors — that’s a whole separate skill). Columns went up, hydraulics ran, cables tensioned, and he loaded his lightest car (a 60s British roadster) for the first cycle. The lift ran perfectly. What didn’t run perfectly was his workflow around the lift. He’d placed the car lift automotive setup with 30 inches of clearance to the west wall, which was fine for the roadster but tight for a full-size car with the door open on the driver’s side. He noticed it the first week. He lived with it for six months before calling us to move it. That’s the layout lesson: think about how you’ll approach the lift with a full-size vehicle, doors open, before you commit to a location. 60 inches of clearance side-to-side is comfortable. 30 inches is not.

The layout revision

Six months after install, we came back and moved the car lift automotive setup. That process is not free but it’s not catastrophic either. We removed anchors, pulled columns, patched the old anchor holes with high-strength grout, drilled new anchors in the new position, reset columns, re-ran hydraulics, and cycled the lift. Total time on-site was about six hours. The lift lost nothing structurally and the shop floor lost nothing structurally. The collector gained 30 inches of side clearance on the driver’s side, which changed his experience of using the lift every day. First differential fluid service on the new setup

Eight months in he did his first differential fluid service on one of the collection cars, a 90s SUV with a solid rear axle. He’d never done a diff service before at home because on jack stands the geometry is miserable — you’re on your back trying to angle a wrench past exhaust and driveshaft with no leverage. On a car lift automotive rig at full height, the diff sits at chest level. He walked up to it, cracked the fill plug, cracked the drain plug, caught the fluid in a pan, cleaned the case, and refilled through the fill plug with a hand pump. Total time was about an hour. He called us mid-job to confirm fill volume (his shop manual disagreed with a forum) and we walked him through checking the fill level to the plug lip rather than trusting a spec sheet. Simple job, made straightforward by the lift, and a service he’ll now do routinely on every car in the collection.

The airflow and lighting layout he got right

One thing the collector nailed from day one was airflow and lighting around the lift. He installed LED shop lights on separate switched circuits above and to the sides of the car lift automotive bay so he can light the underside from the sides when the lift is raised. Overhead-only lighting is the classic mistake — when you raise a car, the light disappears into shadow above the vehicle. Side-angled lights fix that. He also installed a ceiling fan directly above the lift for airflow during long service jobs; when he raises a car and works underneath for an hour, air moves. In the summer near the Iowa-Nebraska border, that matters. Small choices. Big impact on daily use of the bay. He didn’t spend a fortune on either. He spent maybe a few hundred on lights and a fan. He gets the benefit of both every time he uses the lift.

What he’d change if he did it again

Twelve months in, what would he change? Three things. First, he’d have gotten the layout right on install day rather than moving it at month six. That’s the biggest one. Second, he’d have installed an air-line drop from the ceiling right at the car lift automotive control column so he doesn’t drag hose across the shop every time he grabs an impact. Air is cheap; running the drop is easy at install and annoying later. Third, he’d have added a slide jack tray at initial purchase rather than as an add-on later. He uses it constantly now for brake work and tire rotations, and it would have been a small percentage of the total lift cost bundled at purchase versus a real percentage bought separately after freight. What year two looks like

Year two on this collector’s car lift automotive setup is about routine, not surprises. Quarterly cable walk-arounds. Annual full inspection. Fluid services on the collection cars as they come due. He’s added a second, smaller mid-rise scissor lift for quick jobs like tire rotations that don’t need full lift height. The 4-post remains the storage and heavy-work platform.
