A car lift automotive delivery is not a UPS box on the porch — it is a two-crate freight shipment weighing north of 2,000 pounds that arrives on a 53-foot dry van with no lift gate unless you specifically pay for one. A family-owned garage in Davenport, third generation, called us last fall wanting a 4-post lift to store the Corvette and Model A project through Iowa winter. He had a great bay, a fresh slab, and no forklift. Freight was our problem to solve, not his. We drove our forklift over from Ames, met the truck at his shop, and walked the whole family through the unload. This is the technical deep-dive we wish more buyers got before their freight arrives.

What a 4-post car lift automotive freight shipment actually looks like

A typical 4-post lift ships as two banded crates on wood pallets. The tall crate holds four columns, two rails, four sheaves, and the cable set — roughly 96 inches long, 30 inches wide, 24 inches tall, and 2,800 to 3,200 pounds depending on capacity. The second crate holds the runways, cross tubes, ramps, wheel stops, and the power unit — roughly 100 inches long, 40 inches wide, 22 inches tall, and 2,400 to 2,900 pounds. Total shipping weight for a 9,000-lb 4-post is generally in the 5,200 to 6,100 pound range.

Both crates arrive on the same truck, but the freight carrier will not unload them for you. Their driver is contracted door-to-dock, not to-your-slab. On a residential-style shop with no dock, you either need a lift-gate service (rare on freight this heavy, and adds cost and a shorter truck), or you need a forklift on-site. This is where the majority of first-time car lift automotive buyers hit a wall. They assume the freight company drops it off. It does not. Our Davenport customer had a fantastic space but no forklift and no dock. That is why we drove ours over — a job we do routinely for buyers in eastern Iowa when the logistics do not line up on their end.

Dock-height vs ground-level delivery

Freight semis sit at truck-bed height, roughly 48 to 52 inches off the ground. A commercial building with a dock has a raised platform matching that height, and a pallet jack rolls the crates straight off. A residential garage or independent shop almost never has that. That means one of two things: the driver drops the crates onto the pavement using a lift gate (only offered on shorter trucks with smaller crates — most car lift automotive freight is too heavy for a standard lift gate), or you unload with a forklift.

Ground-level delivery is what most Iowa buyers actually need. We coordinate that by requesting a non-lift-gate freight class and arranging our own forklift on the delivery day. Our forklift reaches into the trailer, gets tines under a crate, backs out, and sets the crate on the driveway. From there we walk the crate down the driveway on the forklift and set it inside the bay next to where the lift will land. This takes about 20 minutes per crate. If a buyer tries to skip the forklift and roll a 2,800-pound crate on pipes across a driveway — we have seen this — it usually ends with a rolled ankle or a scarred slab. Forklift capacity and reach dimensions

A 4,000-lb rated forklift is the minimum we recommend for 4-post lift unloading. A 5,000-lb Cushion or pneumatic-tire yard forklift is ideal. The tines need to reach at least 48 inches deep to safely support the crate’s center of gravity, and 60 inches is much safer. The forklift’s mast height matters less than reach — you are not lifting the crate high, just enough to clear the trailer deck and back it out.

If you are renting a forklift for the day, request a 5,000-lb pneumatic-tire outdoor rig. Cost in eastern Iowa is generally $180 to $260 for a half-day delivered and picked up. Some rental yards will send a driver too — worth it if you have not run a forklift in a while. Our Davenport shop chose to have us do the whole thing, which is what most buyers pick. We rolled our forklift onto our trailer, drove it out, unloaded both crates and the power unit, and rolled it back on. The customer never touched a tine. For a car lift automotive shops build where you are already coordinating slab prep, electrical, and install day, adding forklift logistics on top is one detail too many. We just do it.

Column weight breakdown and handling

Once the crates are inside the bay, they get broken down. Each column of a 9,000-lb 4-post weighs about 220 to 260 pounds. Two people can handle a single column at a time, walking it upright to its slab position. The runways are heavier — 340 to 410 pounds each — and we always use a forklift or an engine hoist to set them on top of the columns during assembly. Trying to lift a runway by hand is how people hurt their backs.

The power unit is a compact box, usually 60 to 80 pounds, mounted to the front-left column during assembly. Cross tubes, ramps, and wheel stops are all one-person lifts. Cables come coiled in bundles and get run through the sheave assemblies during the final assembly step. For our Davenport customer we broke down both crates, staged the components in the order they would install, and set the four columns in their approximate slab positions before starting the anchor drill. That staging step is what makes a smooth install. A car lift automotive shops do well with is the one where the crate-to-slab handoff was planned, not improvised. Owners who try to do this alone spend a whole day just moving parts around before they even start assembly.

Slab, electrical, and site-readiness checks

For his 4-post storage build we needed a minimum 4-inch reinforced slab at 3,000 PSI cured. His slab was fresh — poured 45 days out — and cured to 3,900 PSI on our test. That is above spec and he was clear to anchor. If the slab had come back below 3,000, we would have delayed anchoring by 30 days and let it cure longer, or in worst cases recommended saw-cutting and pouring a thicker pad. This is not something you want to find out on delivery day.

Electrical was 220V single-phase at a 30-amp breaker, which is the standard for a home or small-shop 4-post car lift automotive. We ran a hardwired feed from the panel to a dedicated wall outlet 4 feet from the front-left column. Total run was 18 feet in EMT conduit. His electrician handled the panel side, we handled the whip and the connection to the power unit. Before the freight arrived we walked through a punch list: slab depth verified, PSI verified, electrical run stubbed, ceiling clear, no obstructions in the bay footprint. Nothing on delivery day was a surprise. That is the point of the site survey. A car lift automotive shops build should feel boring on install day, not exciting.

Assembly sequence and manpower

A 4-post assembly is a two-person job for six to eight hours. Four for our team, four for the customer would be faster, but two is enough. Sequence: set columns plumb at anchor points, hand-drill anchor pilot holes, drive wedge anchors and torque to spec, install cross tubes between columns, lift runways onto column tops with the forklift or engine hoist, thread cables through sheaves in the correct wrapping order, connect the power unit, prime and bleed hydraulics, cycle the lift empty three times, then load-test with a vehicle.

Skipping the load test is the single biggest install shortcut we see when a buyer installs themselves. Every reputable manufacturer requires a load-cycle test before service. On our Davenport install we ran the lift empty three times, then his Corvette went up and back down twice under our observation before we handed him the keys. Total time from freight-off to first-vehicle-raised was about seven hours. Not fast, but done right. The car lift automotive shops we install stay running because the initial assembly was done in sequence and load-tested before anybody trusted their weight to it.

What to plan before your freight arrives

Three weeks before your delivery date, verify slab cure and PSI, get electrical stubbed, and confirm ceiling clearance with a laser. One week before, confirm freight ETA, forklift arrangement, and driveway accessibility for a 53-foot truck (if your driveway does not fit that, we can arrange a shorter box truck at extra cost). Delivery day, have the bay clear, the slab clean, and a signed delivery receipt ready. If we are doing the install, we arrive at the same time as the freight.
