A two-post lift depends on its cables to keep both sides of the carriage moving together and locked at the same height. When a cable stretches, frays, or corrodes unevenly, the two sides of the lift can drift out of sync — and that’s when a vehicle starts to tilt on the arms instead of sitting level. This isn’t a slow, obvious process most of the time. It can look fine on a Monday and show a broken strand by Friday, especially in a shop that runs multiple lift cycles a day. That’s exactly why car lift cable inspection signs are something you should be checking on a set schedule, not just when something feels off.

We’ve been called out to shops where the owner assumed a slight lean in the vehicle was normal, or thought a little rust on the cable was just cosmetic. Run a shop rag along the length of each cable during your walk-around. If the rag catches or snags, you’ve found a broken strand even if you can’t see it clearly. Pay extra attention to the sections that pass over pulleys and sheaves, since that’s where bending stress concentrates and fraying tends to start first. We also recommend checking the cable ends near the swage fittings, where corrosion and stress often combine. Rust, Corrosion, and Kinking

If one side of the carriage sits noticeably higher or lower than the other when the lift is fully raised, or if the vehicle appears to lean to one side, that’s a strong indicator that one cable has stretched more than its partner. Carriage drift while the lift is holding a vehicle stationary is another warning sign. A properly tensioned and healthy set of cables shouldn’t allow noticeable settling once the lift is locked. If you notice drift, don’t just re-adjust the equalizer cable and move on — check the condition of the cables themselves first, because tension adjustments can mask a cable that’s actually failing.

Cable Diameter and Wear Against Pulleys

Cables lose diameter as they wear, even when they don’t look damaged. A cable that’s a size undersize from its original spec has already lost a meaningful amount of load capacity.
