What “Rated Capacity” Actually Means on a Lift Label

Rated capacity is the total vehicle weight the manufacturer certifies the lift to raise, distributed across all lifting points as the design intends. A 10,000 lb two-post lift means 10,000 lb of vehicle — not 10,000 lb plus a loaded transmission jack, not 10,000 lb plus a bed full of scrap. It also assumes the load is reasonably balanced front to rear and side to side. Each arm on a four-arm two-post lift is generally good for a quarter of the total rating, and if you park a heavily nose-loaded dually so that 70 percent of the weight sits on the front arms, you can overload two arms while the total stays under the label number.

That distinction matters because most overload situations we get called about are not gross overloads at all. They are distribution problems. A shop lifts a cargo van with a rear-mounted lift gate and shelving, or a service truck with a crane on the back, and the rear arms take far more than their share. Certified lifts carry an ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) gold label, which means the capacity claim was third-party validated rather than marketing copy. Any useful car lift capacity guide has to start here, because a number stamped on a column is meaningless if the load never sits where the engineer assumed it would.

Start With Your Heaviest Regular Vehicle, Not Your Heaviest Ever

The most common mistake we see is a shop sizing equipment around one vehicle they lifted twice in five years. A neighbor’s motorhome, a friend’s rollback, a one-off dump truck. That single memory pushes people from a sensible 12,000 lb unit into a 18,000 lb purchase that needs deeper concrete, a taller ceiling, and a bigger power drop. Meanwhile the daily reality is half-ton pickups and crossovers in the 4,500 to 6,500 lb range.

We ask customers to write down the ten heaviest vehicles they serviced last month and find the honest ceiling. A three-quarter-ton diesel pickup runs roughly 7,500 to 8,500 lb curb. A one-ton dually crew cab with a utility body can push past 10,000 lb. A Class 4 box truck lands in the 12,000 to 15,000 lb neighborhood. Full-size EVs surprised a lot of shops — battery packs added 1,000 to 1,800 lb over comparable gas models, and an electric pickup can run past 9,000 lb before you load a thing into it. If the heavy stuff shows up once a quarter, subbing it out or using mobile columns for those jobs is often cheaper than paying for capacity that sits idle. The Capacity Tiers We Actually Sell in Iowa

Practically speaking, the market clusters into a handful of tiers, and this part of the car lift capacity guide is the part most people skip to. Nine thousand pounds covers passenger cars, small SUVs, and half-ton trucks — fine for a home garage or a specialty car shop, tight for a general repair bay. Ten thousand pounds is the volume seller and handles the overwhelming majority of light-duty work, including most three-quarter-ton pickups. Twelve thousand pounds is where we point general repair shops that see diesel pickups, cargo vans, and light commercial vehicles weekly; the extra headroom costs less than most people assume.

Fifteen and eighteen thousand pound two-post lifts serve fleet shops, municipal garages, and anyone regularly under box trucks or shuttle buses. Above that you are into heavy-duty territory — 30,000 lb four-post units and mobile column sets in the 40,000 to 80,000 lb range for Class 7 and 8 trucks. Four-post lifts run their own ladder, from 8,000 lb home storage units through 14,000 lb and 30,000 lb service models, and because they carry the vehicle on runways rather than four arms, distribution is more forgiving. Safety Margins: How Much Cushion Is Reasonable

We generally recommend 20 to 25 percent of headroom above your heaviest regular vehicle. On a 8,000 lb daily maximum, that lands you on a 10,000 lb lift. The cushion is not there because manufacturers exaggerate — it is there because real shops load beds, leave tool chests in truck boxes, add plow mounts, and bolt on aftermarket bumpers that nobody weighed. It also accounts for the distribution issue we described earlier, where a nose-heavy or tail-heavy vehicle overloads half the arms.

What we do not recommend is treating rated capacity as a soft number to be pushed. Hydraulic lifts do not fail gracefully. When a shop runs at or above rated capacity habitually, we see it in the service calls: cylinder seals weeping early, cable stretch and uneven arm height, worn slide blocks chewing through column channels, and lock latches that no longer engage cleanly. Those failures cost more in downtime and parts than the price difference between capacity tiers ever would. If you are already running a lift you suspect is undersized, get it inspected before something breaks — and keep a log of the vehicles that make you nervous, because that log is the best data you will have when it comes time to replace it.

Concrete, Ceiling, and Power: The Constraints Capacity Brings With It

Capacity is never a standalone decision. Higher-rated lifts demand more from the building. A typical 10,000 lb two-post needs about four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete in good condition; step up to 15,000 or 18,000 lb and you are looking at six inches or more, sometimes with engineered footings poured specifically for the anchor pattern. We have cut and repoured plenty of pads in older Iowa buildings where the original slab was three and a half inches over questionable base, and that work needs to be budgeted before the lift arrives, not discovered on install day.

Ceiling height scales too. A clearfloor two-post with an overhead beam wants roughly 12 feet minimum for light-duty work, more if you are lifting tall vans or want full rise under a box truck. Baseplate models solve low-ceiling problems but put a crossover at floor level. Power matters as well: most light-duty units run single-phase 208-230V, while heavier lifts often want three-phase, which is a real conversation with your electrician and sometimes with the utility. Four-Post, Scissor, and Mobile Column Capacity Considerations

Two-post lifts dominate the capacity conversation, but they are not the only answer. Four-post lifts distribute load across runways and wheel contact, which makes them well suited to heavy or awkward vehicles, long wheelbases, and storage duty. A home enthusiast stacking two cars in one bay typically needs 8,000 to 9,000 lb; a shop doing alignments on light commercial trucks may want 14,000 lb or more with alignment-ready runways and rolling jacks.

Scissor and mid-rise lifts trade capacity and access for footprint. Most mid-rise units land in the 6,000 to 7,000 lb range, which is fine for tire and brake work on cars and crossovers but marginal for pickups. Full-rise scissor lifts reach 10,000 to 12,000 lb and work well in bays where a two-post is not practical. Mobile column sets are the true heavy-duty answer: four columns rated 18,000 lb each give you 72,000 lb total, and six-column configurations handle articulated buses and fire apparatus.
