Most shops assume the manufacturer name stamped somewhere on the lift is enough to order a matching cylinder. It isn’t. Rotary, Challenger, and other major brands have made dozens of cylinder variants over the decades, and even lifts sold under the same model number changed internally across production years. A 2005 two-post lift and a 2015 lift wearing the same model plate can use completely different cylinders with different bore diameters, rod sizes, and port locations. That’s the core problem with car lift cylinder identification from a name plate alone — the model number tells you a family of lifts, not the exact part.

On top of that, a lot of lifts on the used market in Iowa have been resold, relocated, or repaired with a cylinder that doesn’t match the original spec. A tape measure and a few minutes under the lift are usually all it takes. Measure the barrel at its widest point, not at a fitting or a mounting ear. Measure the rod where it’s exposed and clean, not where it’s worn or pitted. Round to the nearest sixteenth of an inch and write it down rather than trusting memory.
