A restoration shop owner in northern Missouri called us last spring with a question we hear constantly: should he buy a used car lift off an auction site for a fraction of the cost, or spend the money on new? He was pulling CV axles and half-shafts out of a run of 1990s all-wheel-drive project cars, and his back had finally filed a complaint. He had a budget number in his head, a 26-foot-wide bay, and no idea whether the ceiling would clear a two-post. That call turned into a forty-minute conversation, and by the end of it we had walked a decision tree that we use with almost every customer. Here it is, written down, so you can walk it yourself before you ever pick up the phone.

Start With the Work, Not the Price Tag

Everyone begins this process with a dollar figure, and that is exactly backwards. The first branch of the decision tree is what you actually do all day. Our Missouri restoration customer spends most of his hours on suspension and driveline work — CV axles, half-shafts, inner and outer boots, wheel bearings. That work demands wheels-free access. A drive-on ramp style unit puts the suspension under load and turns a two-hour axle job into a wrestling match with spring compressors and jack stands. So before he ever compared prices, the configuration was decided for him: a two-post, arms under the pinch welds, wheels hanging.

Contrast that with a collector who wants to park a Corvette over a daily driver and only occasionally change oil. That person is a four-post buyer, full stop, and the whole used-versus-new math changes because four-post storage units live an easy life. The point is that the job dictates the configuration, the configuration narrows the model list, and only then does budget enter the picture. We have watched people buy a cheap unit that was wrong for their work and replace it inside two years, which is the most expensive way to save money we know of. Spend twenty minutes honestly listing what rolls into your bay before you spend anything else.

Measure the Building Before You Shop

The second branch kills more deals than price ever does. Ceiling height, concrete thickness, and column spacing are physical facts, and no amount of wanting will change them. A clearfloor two-post with an overhead crossbar typically wants somewhere around 12 feet of clear height to run a full-size truck to full rise. A baseplate model tucks the hydraulic lines and equalization cables into a floor plate and drops that requirement several feet, which is why baseplate units are the answer in older pole buildings and converted barns across rural Iowa and Missouri.

Concrete matters just as much. Most manufacturers spec four inches of 3,000 PSI minimum for a 10,000 lb two-post, and a lot of them want more. Older shop slabs poured in the 1960s and 70s are frequently thinner than the owner believes, and they crack around anchors when a loaded arm swings out. We core-test when there is doubt, and we have poured plenty of pads in central Iowa for customers whose existing floor simply would not hold. Also measure your bay width, your door swing, and where the overhead lights and heaters live. A twelve-foot-wide bay with a garage door track running down the middle is a real constraint. Get a tape measure out and write the numbers down — that sheet of paper answers half the questions we would otherwise ask you.

What a Used Car Lift Actually Costs You

Now the money. A used car lift looks fantastic on paper. Somebody’s shop closed, the equipment is sitting in a warehouse, and the asking number is maybe a third of new. We are not going to tell you never to buy used, because we have installed plenty of secondhand units that ran another fifteen years. But you need to price the whole package, not the sticker.

Here is what gets added after the sale: rigging and freight, because these things weigh 1,500 to 2,500 pounds and do not fit in a pickup bed. New anchors, always. A fresh set of equalization cables if there is any doubt about age, and there is always doubt. Hydraulic hoses, which dry-rot whether the unit was used or not. Arm restraint gears and pins if they are worn round. A power unit rebuild or replacement if the seller cannot demonstrate it holding pressure. Add all that up and a bargain unit frequently lands within striking distance of a new entry-level model that arrives with a warranty, an install manual, and a parts catalog we can order from tomorrow. The used route makes sense when the brand is one we can still source parts for — Rotary and Challenger are the safe bets — and when you can inspect it standing up and operating. It makes far less sense when it is a discontinued import with no data plate.

The Parts Availability Question Nobody Asks

We field calls every week from people who bought a used unit with no brand name, no serial number, and a leaking cylinder. One recent caller had a car stuck in the air on a black four-post rated at 7,000 pounds and could not tell us who made it. That is a genuinely bad afternoon. When the hydraulics fail on an orphaned machine, you are into custom cylinder work or a full replacement, and the vehicle is hostage the whole time.

This is the single strongest argument for buying a known brand, used or new. Rotary has been building lifts for a century and we can pull a cylinder, a carriage slider, or a lock ladder for a thirty-year-old SPO series unit without much drama. Challenger parts are similarly available. BendPak and Atlas support their home-shop lines well. When a used machine carries one of those names and a legible data plate, the used path is genuinely viable, and we will happily inspect, install, and certify it. When it does not, you are gambling with a two-ton machine holding a car over your head. Before you buy anything secondhand, photograph the data plate and send it to us. We will tell you in about five minutes whether the parts pipeline exists. That one text message has saved our customers real money more times than we can count.

Capacity: Buy the Next Size Up

Our northern Missouri restoration customer wanted a 9,000 lb unit because his project cars are light — old sports cars, a couple of sedans, nothing heavy. We pushed him to 10,000. Here is the logic. Capacity ratings are about the whole system: columns, carriages, cables, arms, and the hydraulic circuit. Running a machine near its ceiling every day accelerates wear on every one of those parts. Running the same weight on a unit rated one tier higher means everything loafs.

There is also the reality that your work changes. Restoration shops that swore they only touch classic cars end up with a customer’s crew-cab pickup in the bay because he is a good client and it needs brakes. Fleet work creeps in. A friend needs a van looked at. The extra cost between a 9,000 and a 10,000 lb two-post is small relative to the total project, and the extra cost between 10,000 and 12,000 is not enormous either if you are already paying for freight and installation. We tell customers to buy the capacity they will need in five years, not the one that barely covers today. The one caveat: bigger capacity often means taller columns and wider column spacing, which loops you right back to the building measurements. Capacity, ceiling, and bay width have to be solved together, not in sequence.

Installation Is Not the Place to Save

We got a lead out of Indiana from a man who installed his own unit and found it would not level. He searched for repair help and found us. That is a common story and an expensive one. Two-post lifts require the columns to be plumb, the carriages synchronized through the equalization cables, and the anchors torqued to spec into sound concrete. Miss any of those and you get uneven rise, cables that fray on one side, and arm restraints that will not engage properly.

A professional install also gets you a documented anchor torque, a shimming record, and a functional test with a known load. If you ever face an insurance inspection or an OSHA visit, those records matter. If you are buying used specifically because money is tight, we would rather see you spend less on the machine and still pay for a correct installation than the reverse. Walking the Tree End to End

Put it all together and the sequence is simple. What work do you do? That picks two-post versus four-post versus scissor. What does your building allow? That picks clearfloor versus baseplate and caps your column height. What will you lift in five years? That sets capacity. Only then do you compare a new machine against a specific used one, with the full cost of the used unit written out including freight, cables, anchors, hoses, and any hydraulic work.

Our Missouri customer ended up with a new 10,000 lb baseplate two-post because his old pole barn ceiling was 11 feet 4 inches at the trusses. A clearfloor overhead model would have been useless to him, and the used clearfloor unit he had been eyeing on an auction site would have been a very expensive lesson. He does CV axle and half-shaft work all day now with the wheels hanging free and the arms out of his way, and he tells us the job time dropped by better than half.
