Buying a car lift is one of those purchases that feels enormous the week you sign for it and then becomes completely invisible six months later, because you can’t imagine working without it. We spent last year walking an RV and trailer service shop in the Des Moines metro through exactly that arc — from the first phone call where the owner was ninety percent sure he wanted to buy used, through anchor layout, through the first real job he ran on it, which happened to be a differential fluid service on a dually that had been kicked out of two other shops. Why the shop started out convinced used was the answer
Every buyer we talk to has heard the same story from a friend: somebody bought a twenty-year-old two-post off an auction for a fraction of retail, hauled it home on a flatbed, and it’s been running fine ever since. That story is true often enough to be dangerous. This shop had a lead on a used unit out of a closing dealership about two hours east, and the owner called us mostly to ask whether we’d install it. We said yes — we install used equipment regularly — but we also asked the questions that decide whether used is smart or expensive. Does it have a data plate with a model number? Are the arms all original and matched? Are the cables and chains original, and does anyone know how old they are? Is there a manual, or at least a manufacturer still in business who can supply one?
On this particular unit the answers came back thin. The data plate was painted over, two of the arm pads were mismatched replacements, and nobody could say when the equalization cables had last been changed. That doesn’t automatically kill a deal. But it does mean you’re budgeting for cables, a hydraulic hose set, possibly a power unit reseal, and a full safety inspection before the first vehicle goes up. By the time we penciled that out against a new Rotary two-post with a warranty and a certified install, the gap was small enough that the used route stopped making sense. He went new. Other customers in the same conversation have gone the other way and been right to.
The used-versus-new framework we actually use
Here’s the framework we walk people through, because it isn’t really about price. It’s about what you know and what you can’t know. A used unit from a shop you can visit, that you can watch cycle under load, with a legible data plate and a brand still supporting parts — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak — is a reasonable buy. You’re inheriting known equipment with a known service path. A used unit from an online listing three states away, unbranded, disassembled by someone who didn’t label the hydraulic lines, is a project. We’ve had customers spend more restoring one of those than a new comparable model would have cost, and they were still chasing a slow drift eighteen months later.
The second question is duty cycle. A collector who raises a vehicle twelve times a year has a completely different risk profile than a production shop cycling a lift thirty times a day. In a commercial bay, downtime costs real money, and the warranty and parts availability on new equipment pay for themselves the first time a power unit fails on a Friday afternoon. For light home use, the math tilts the other way. The third question is whether you’re already spending on the install regardless — concrete evaluation, anchors, electrical drop, and our labor are roughly the same whether the equipment is new or forty years old. That fixed cost compresses the savings on a used unit more than most buyers expect. Install day in a Des Moines metro service bay
Install day on a working RV and trailer shop is a scheduling problem before it’s a mechanical one. This shop runs long jobs — a trailer can sit in a bay for three days — so we coordinated for a Monday when the affected bay was clear. We showed up, cored a test plug to verify slab thickness and confirmed we had solid concrete well past the anchor depth, then laid out column positions against the actual traffic pattern in the shop rather than the drawing. That matters more than people think. A perfectly centered installation that puts a column exactly where the parts cart has to pass is a bad installation.
Setting the columns, plumbing the hydraulics, running the equalization cables, and getting the electrical tied in took most of the day. Then comes the part that separates a real install from a drop-and-go: cycling the unit under load, checking synchronization at multiple heights, verifying every safety lock engages audibly and simultaneously, and adjusting until the carriages are dead even. We also walked the owner and his two techs through the daily and monthly checks — cable tension, lock function, hydraulic level, arm restraint engagement — because a car lift that nobody inspects becomes a hazard on a timeline you can’t predict. Before we left, we tagged the unit with our contact info and the model and serial, which sounds trivial until you get the call two years later from someone who has no idea what they own. We field that call constantly, including from people whose vehicle is stuck in the air with a leaking cylinder and who can’t tell us the brand.
The first real job: differential fluid on a dually
The first job that genuinely justified the purchase was a differential fluid service on a one-ton dually that had come in with a whine the owner had been ignoring since fall. Before the lift, that shop did diff services on jack stands, which meant a technician on his back with a drain pan balanced on his chest, fighting the fill plug at an angle that guaranteed a mess. With the truck up at chest height on the new two-post, the whole job took one tech about forty minutes, and he did it standing up.
That’s the part nobody puts in the brochure. The return on a car lift isn’t measured in the jobs you couldn’t do before — it’s measured in the jobs you did badly, slowly, or grudgingly. Fluid services, exhaust work, u-joints, brake lines, trailer axle bearings on the RV side. This shop found that their per-job labor time on undercar work dropped enough in the first quarter that the equipment was carrying itself. It also changed what they were willing to quote. Jobs they used to turn away — the kind of dirty, awkward undercar work that eats a bay for half a day on stands — became routine. The whine on that dually turned out to be a chewed-up ring and pinion, which they caught early because they could actually see it. On stands, in the dark, with fluid running down your forearm, you drain, fill, and hope.
What went wrong in year one
Two things. First, about four months in, one of the arm restraints stopped engaging reliably. That’s a common wear item and an easy fix, but the shop ran it for a couple of weeks before mentioning it to us, which we don’t love. Safety hardware that works most of the time is safety hardware that fails at the worst moment. We swapped the restraint gear and pin under warranty on a routine service visit.
Second, and this is the one we see everywhere: they let the daily lock check slide once the novelty wore off. By month eight, nobody was listening for all four locks to click on the way up. We caught it during an annual inspection when one lock was engaging a half-second behind the others — a symptom of cable stretch, which is completely normal in the first year and completely fixable with an adjustment. Left alone, cable stretch turns into an unlevel carriage, and an unlevel carriage turns into the kind of call we get from people who installed their own equipment and can’t figure out why it won’t sit flat. What a car lift costs to own after the purchase price
Purchase price gets all the attention, and it’s the smaller half of the conversation. Installation on a two-post in an existing building with good concrete typically runs in the low-to-mid four figures depending on travel, electrical work, and whether we need to core or pour. If your slab is thin or cracked, add a saw-cut and pour, which is a real expense but a non-negotiable one. Electrical is its own line item — most commercial two-posts want a dedicated 220V circuit, and if your panel is already loaded, an electrician is part of the project.
Then there’s the ongoing side, which is modest but not zero. Annual ALI-certified inspection. Hydraulic fluid changes on the schedule in the manual. Cables and chains as wear items — figure a replacement interval measured in years, not decades, in a busy commercial bay. Pads and arm restraints wear. None of that is expensive individually, and all of it is cheaper than the alternative. The shop in this story budgets a small annual line for lift maintenance and hasn’t had an unplanned outage. Compare that to the leads we get from people whose equipment has been in service a decade with no inspection, no fluid change, and a set of original cables. Those calls are always more expensive, and occasionally they’re urgent in a way nobody wants — a vehicle in the air, a leaking cylinder, and no way to bring it down safely. Would we recommend the same path to the next buyer?
Mostly, yes — with one adjustment. If we were doing that first year over, we’d have pushed harder on capacity. This shop bought a 10,000 lb two-post, which handles every passenger vehicle and light truck that comes through the door. But they’re an RV and trailer operation, and the heaviest things they touch are at the edge of that number or past it. Six months in, they were already turning away work they’d have liked to take. Capacity is the one spec you can’t retrofit. Buy for the heaviest vehicle you want to service in five years, not the one sitting outside today, and pay attention to how weight distributes — a long-wheelbase dually loads a two-post very differently than a sedan.
On the used-versus-new question, we’d give the same answer we gave then. Used equipment is a legitimate option when you can identify it, inspect it, and get parts for it. When any one of those three is missing, the discount is an illusion. And whichever way you go, the install is not the place to save money — the difference between a properly anchored, correctly synchronized car lift and one somebody bolted down over a weekend shows up in year three, not week one.
