Choosing a car lift on spec sheet numbers alone is the most expensive mistake we watch shops make, and European-marque specialists get burned by it more than anyone. We took a call from an independent Porsche and Audi shop in eastern Nebraska whose imported two-post had a leaking cylinder with a 911 stuck five feet in the air. Nobody could tell us the model. The badge on the column belonged to a brand that had changed importers twice and stopped supporting that generation years earlier. Getting that car down took a day. Getting a replacement cylinder took six weeks. The spec sheet on that unit had looked great — capacity, lifting speed, arm reach, all competitive. What it did not list was whether a seal kit would exist in 2025.

Why Brand Lineage Actually Matters
The automotive lift industry looks crowded but the real manufacturing base is narrow. A lot of what shows up under different names on trade show floors comes out of a handful of overseas factories, gets a paint scheme and a badge, and lands here through an importer who may or may not still be in business in five years. That is not a knock on imported equipment as a category — plenty of it is well built. The problem is the support chain behind it. When an importer folds or drops a line, every unit they sold becomes an orphan, and the parts you need are no longer stocked anywhere in North America.
Rotary has been building lifting equipment in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s and effectively invented the modern two-post design. Challenger has been running out of Louisville since the late 1970s. Those companies have institutional memory — engineering drawings, part number continuity, and dealers who have been ordering from them for decades. When a shop calls us about a Rotary SPO9 from the 1990s, we can usually source what they need. That is not brand loyalty talking, that is a practical observation from doing warranty and out-of-warranty work every week. For European specialists in particular, where a single bay might hold a customer’s car for three days waiting on parts anyway, the last thing you want is the equipment adding to the delay.
The Exhaust And Driveline Bay Is The Hardest Duty Cycle
People assume heavy vehicles are what wears equipment out. In our experience it is cycle count and dwell time. A shop doing exhaust fabrication and driveline work runs a vehicle up, holds it at working height for two or three hours with a tech leaning, prying, and pushing against it, brings it down, checks a fit, and sends it back up. Repeat four times on one job. That pattern loads the locks, the equalization cables, and the carriage slide blocks far harder than a quick tire rotation ever will.
European driveline work compounds it. Pulling a rear subframe or dropping a transaxle means the load center shifts as components come off, and it shifts unevenly. We tell exhaust and driveline shops to spec above their nominal need — a 10,000 or 12,000 lb unit even if nothing they service weighs more than 5,000 — because the extra capacity buys you thicker steel in the arms and beefier lock hardware, and that is what survives the duty cycle. It also means paying attention to arm design. Three-stage front arms with good low-pickup reach matter enormously when you are trying to get pads under the reinforced jacking points on a car with side skirts and an aero underbody. A car lift that cannot reach the correct pickup points on the vehicles you actually service is worthless no matter what the capacity number says.
Reading The Data Plate Before You Need It
Here is the single most useful thing a shop can do this week, and it takes ten minutes per bay. Find the data plate — usually on the inside of a column near the base, sometimes on the power unit bracket — and photograph it. Model number, serial number, manufacture date, capacity. Write the same information on a card and tape it inside your parts cabinet. Then photograph the power unit tag separately, because motor and pump assemblies are frequently sourced from a third party and carry their own part numbers.
We ask for this information on almost every service call and roughly half the time the shop cannot produce it. When someone calls with a car stuck in the air, every minute spent identifying the equipment is a minute not spent fixing it. The eastern Nebraska shop we mentioned had a black four-post in another bay and could tell us nothing about it except that it was rated somewhere around 7,000 lb — which describes about forty different products. Photographing plates also tells you something before you have a problem. If the plate lists an importer address rather than a manufacturer, or if there is no serial number at all, you have learned something important about how easy parts are going to be. Do it for every piece of equipment in the building, including the alignment rack and the mobile columns, and keep the photos somewhere your service writer can find them at 4:30 on a Friday.
What A Real Parts Pipeline Looks Like
A parts pipeline is not a website with a search box. It is inventory sitting on a shelf plus somebody who can identify what you have from a blurry phone photo. We stock the wear items that actually fail: equalization cables, cylinder seal kits, arm restraint gears and pins, lock ladders, hydraulic hoses, power unit motors, and the small hardware that nobody thinks about until it shears. Those items cover the large majority of the calls we take.
Lead time is the whole game. A cable set that ships same day from a domestic warehouse means one afternoon of downtime. The same cable ordered from an overseas factory on a container schedule means your bay is dark for a month or more. We have had shops fabricate temporary fixes to limp through, and we understand why, but running a car lift with a compromised cable or a bypassed lock is genuinely dangerous and we will not help anyone do it. The better answer is to keep a small on-shelf inventory yourself. The Myth That Capacity Is The Only Number That Matters
Shops shop by capacity because it is the number printed largest. It is also the number least likely to be your limiting factor. If you service passenger cars, almost anything on the market clears the weight requirement. What actually determines whether a piece of equipment works in your shop is rise height, arm reach at minimum and maximum extension, pad height at the lowest setting, column width, and overall footprint.
Low pad height is the one European specialists get caught by. A lowered Golf R or a 911 with factory aero sits close enough to the floor that standard pads will not slide under, and now every one of those cars needs ramps or a floor jack just to get started. Ask for the minimum pad height spec and compare it against the lowest car you routinely see, and budget for the correct low-profile adapter set up front rather than discovering the problem on delivery day. Rise height matters differently for exhaust and driveline work than it does for brakes — you want the vehicle high enough that a tech can stand fully upright under a transaxle, which for most people means 72 inches or better of rise, not the 66 that some economy models offer. Bending under a car for three hours ruins backs and slows work. We would rather see a shop buy fewer bays with the right geometry than more bays that fight the work. Installation And Service Support Is Part Of The Purchase
Buying from a marketplace listing with free freight sounds economical until the truck arrives. Freight lifts get delivered curbside on a semi with no liftgate, you unload two 900-pound columns yourself, and then you are on your own for anchoring, hydraulic priming, cable tensioning, and the initial lock synchronization. We get calls from people who did it themselves — one came from a shop where the carriages would not level and the owner had found us through a search for lift repair. Every one of those is fixable, but you paid twice.
What we look at during an install is whether the concrete will actually hold, whether the bay geometry works for the vehicles the shop sees, and whether the anchors are torqued and re-torqued after the first load cycle. Then we come back for annual inspection, which for a commercial shop is not optional under most insurance and ANSI guidance. Having an installer who is a couple hours’ drive away and stocks the parts for what they sold you changes the math on downtime completely. Start with an inventory of what you already own and what its parts situation is. If you have an orphaned unit in a bay, you are not necessarily replacing it tomorrow, but you should know now whether seal kits and cables exist for it so you are not finding out with a customer’s car in the air. Then decide what your bays need to do for the next decade rather than what they do today. European specialty work is trending toward heavier vehicles with hybrid and EV variants carrying significant battery mass low in the chassis, and pickup points are moving. Capacity headroom and adaptable arm geometry are worth paying for now. For commercial two-post work we lean toward Rotary and Challenger; for a home shop or a small side bay, BendPak and Atlas both make sensible equipment.
