A car lift changes the way a shop works long before it ever changes the balance sheet, and we watched that play out over twelve months at an RV and trailer service outfit on the edge of Cedar Rapids. They came to us because they were tired of crawling under tow vehicles and dually pickups on jack stands to chase exhaust leaks and driveline vibration. We handled the site walk, the concrete evaluation, the anchor layout, and the install, then came back for the first annual service. This article is that whole year, start to finish — what surprised them, what we’d do differently, and how the equipment held its value.

Why an RV and Trailer Shop Wanted Overhead Access
Most people assume an RV shop doesn’t need anything but a big flat floor and a creeper. That’s true right up until you’re diagnosing a driveline vibration on a three-quarter-ton tow vehicle, or replacing a rotted exhaust section on a truck that’s been pulling a fifth wheel through six Iowa winters. Both jobs live under the vehicle in a narrow band between the frame rails, and both are miserable at floor height. The shop’s lead tech told us he was spending more time repositioning jack stands than turning wrenches, and that a driveshaft U-joint replacement he could do in forty minutes with clear access was eating half a day.
Their trailer work still happens on the floor, and it always will — a 30-foot bumper-pull isn’t going on any hoist. But the tow vehicles, service trucks, and customer daily drivers that come through alongside the RV work made up a real share of billable hours. That’s the case for putting in a lift even in a shop that isn’t a traditional automotive bay. They didn’t need a fleet of hoists. They needed one good one in the bay closest to the parts room, sized for the heaviest pickup they’d ever see, with arms that could reach a long wheelbase without getting cute about it. That narrowed the shopping list fast.
Choosing the Capacity and Configuration
We spent more time on capacity than on anything else. The temptation is always to buy the number that covers the biggest thing that has ever rolled into the shop, but that number is usually a trailer, not a vehicle. Once we sorted out what would actually be lifted — crew cab diesels, some duallies, the occasional cargo van — a 12,000 lb class asymmetric two-post covered it with real margin. Going to 15,000 or 18,000 would have added cost and, more importantly, height. Their ceiling had usable clearance but not unlimited clearance, and a taller column with a taller overhead beam would have eaten into the room they needed to swing a tailgate open at full lift.
Configuration mattered just as much. Asymmetric arms let a long pickup sit far enough back that the doors clear the columns, which matters when a tech is climbing in and out to check a driveline angle. We also talked through clearfloor versus floorplate. Clearfloor won, because the shop moves floor jacks, transmission jacks, and rolling exhaust hangers across that bay constantly, and a floorplate would have been a permanent trip point for the rolling equipment. Small choices like that are the difference between a car lift you love in year three and one you tolerate. We laid all of it out on paper before anyone ordered a thing, which is how we prefer to work.
Install Day and the Concrete Question
Concrete is where good intentions go to die. The building was a 1990s pole structure with a slab poured in sections, and the bay they wanted had a control joint running almost exactly where one column wanted to land. We core-tested and found adequate thickness across most of the footprint, but we shifted the layout about eighteen inches to keep both anchor patterns fully in sound concrete with proper edge distance. That shift cost them nothing except a slightly different approach angle from the overhead door, and it saved them from anchors that would have loosened within a season.
The install itself ran a single day. Columns plumbed, overhead beam set, hydraulic lines run and bled, electrical tied into a dedicated circuit, then a full cycle test with a loaded vehicle and a torque check on every anchor. We walked the owner and both techs through the safety lock engagement sound, the manual release procedure, and how to spot a cable that’s out of adjustment before it becomes a problem. That last part matters more than the paperwork. Roughly half the emergency calls we field are from people who bought a car lift online, bolted it down themselves, and never learned what normal sounds like — including a homeowner out of state who installed his own hoist and called us months later because it wouldn’t level. Somebody has to teach you the equipment.
What Changed in the First Ninety Days
The productivity change showed up fast, and not where they expected. Exhaust work was the obvious win — a cat-back replacement on a diesel went from an awkward floor job with three repositions to a clean single-setup repair with both hands free above shoulder height. But the bigger surprise was diagnostic speed. Being able to put a truck in the air, spin the driveshaft by hand, and watch the U-joints and carrier bearing under load turned a lot of “we think it’s the driveline” guesses into confirmed findings. Confirmed findings mean fewer comeback visits and fewer refunded labor hours, which is the part that actually shows up on a P&L.
They also started taking work they used to turn away. Brake jobs on tow vehicles, fuel tank straps, transfer case seals — all things they’d previously punted to a shop across town because doing them on the floor wasn’t worth the labor time. Within three months that overflow work was filling gaps between RV appointments, which is exactly the schedule-smoothing an independent shop needs in a seasonal business. RV service in eastern Iowa is brutally seasonal. Having a bay that can bill in February is not a small thing. The equipment didn’t create new customers so much as it let them say yes to customers already standing in the lobby.
The First Annual Service Visit
We came back at the eleven-month mark for the first inspection. Findings were unremarkable in the best way. Anchor torque had settled slightly on three of eight bolts, which is normal and exactly why you re-torque. Both lifting cables were within spec but one had picked up about a quarter inch of stretch, so we adjusted for equal arm height. Hydraulic fluid level was fine, no weeping at the cylinder rod seal, no chafe marks on the hose runs. Safety locks engaged crisply on both columns. Total visit was under two hours.
What we did flag was housekeeping. Exhaust work is filthy work, and there was enough carbon dust and road salt packed into the carriage slides that we cleaned and relubricated them on the spot. Salt is the silent killer on Iowa equipment — it wicks into slide surfaces and cable ends and quietly eats them. How a Car Lift Holds Its Value
The resale conversation came up because the owner is five or six years from selling the business to his son-in-law, and he wanted to know whether this was an expense or an asset. The honest answer is that a properly installed, documented, brand-name hoist is one of the few pieces of shop equipment that holds value like real estate. Used commercial hoists from Rotary and Challenger trade actively, and a well-kept unit with service records commonly brings a meaningful share of what it cost new — far better recovery than a scan tool or an alignment rack of the same age.
Three things drive that number. First, brand and parts availability: if a buyer can order a cylinder, cable set, or lock dog for it next week, the equipment is worth real money. Orphan imports with no parts channel are worth scrap plus freight. Second, documentation. A folder with the install certification, the anchor torque record, and every annual inspection turns a used car lift from a gamble into a known quantity, and buyers pay for known quantities. Third, condition of the wear items — cables, slide blocks, and the cylinder rod finish tell an inspector everything about how the previous owner treated it. Skip maintenance and you’re not just risking downtime, you’re spending your own resale value. That reframing landed harder than any safety argument we made.
What We’d Tell the Next Shop
If you’re an RV, trailer, or truck-adjacent shop in eastern Iowa thinking about your first hoist, a few things from this project are worth stealing. Buy for the vehicles you’ll actually lift, not the trailers you’ll never lift. Measure your ceiling before you fall in love with a taller column. Assume the concrete needs to be verified rather than trusted, especially in a pole building where the slab was poured in stages by whoever was cheapest that year. And plan the bay location around workflow — being near the parts room and the compressor drop saved that crew hundreds of steps a week.
Finally, treat the install as part of the purchase rather than an afterthought.
