A farm shop in southeast Iowa is one of the best places on earth to put a car lift, and one of the easiest places to buy the wrong one. We get the call every spring: a grain farmer with a 40×60 machine shed, a gravel-dust floor, a pile of half-shafts on the bench, and a CV axle job on the family Suburban that has been waiting three weekends for a free jack stand. The equipment itself is the easy part. What separates a purchase that lasts twenty years from one that fights you is the checklist you run before the truck shows up — slab thickness, ceiling height, power, and honest expectations about hydraulic cylinder seals. Start With the Slab, Not the Brochure

Every farm shop conversation should begin under your boots. A two-post needs a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, and most manufacturers want more than that for anything over 10,000 pounds. Pole buildings are where this gets interesting. Plenty of the shops we walk into in southeast Iowa were poured in two or three pours across different years, sometimes with a control joint running right where you want an anchor. Anchoring within six inches of a joint or an edge is how you end up with a spalled column base and a lift that leans a degree or two out of plumb forever.

Bring a hammer drill and pull a test core, or at minimum drill a pilot hole in three spots and measure your depth. If you find three and a half inches of slab over sand, you are not out of luck — you cut and pour a pad. We have specified plenty of them: typically an 8-inch-thick, 4×4-foot pad per column, tied into the surrounding slab with rebar dowels. It adds a weekend and a couple of yards of concrete, and it means your car lift is anchored to something that will not move when a 6,000-pound crew cab is 60 inches in the air with a CV axle hanging out of it. Skipping this step is the single most common regret we hear about.

Ceiling Height, Sidewall Height, and the Truss Problem

Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you remember that pole buildings put their trusses on top of that measurement, and the low point is usually a purlin, a light fixture, or a bottom chord that dips right over your bay. Measure to the lowest obstruction over the exact footprint where the columns will stand, not to the peak. A standard clearfloor two-post with an overhead crossbar wants roughly 12 feet of clear height, and you also need the vehicle’s own height plus rise. A baseplate model routes the hydraulic line and equalizer cables through a low channel in the floor and drops your ceiling requirement to about 10 or 11 feet, which is why we sell so many of them into older Iowa shops.

Four-post units are a different math problem because you are usually stacking. If the plan is to park a pickup underneath and store a project car overhead, you need runway height plus the top vehicle’s height plus a few inches of margin, and you need to accept that anything with a stack is a storage machine first and a service machine second. A rolling jack tray gets your wheels off, but you will be working around runways all day. For a farm shop where CV axle and half-shaft work is the main event, a two-post that leaves the underside wide open is almost always the better tool, and it costs less to anchor.

Sizing for the Actual Fleet, Not the Heaviest Thing You Own

Most people overbuy capacity and underbuy reach. A 10,000-pound two-post handles essentially every passenger vehicle, half-ton, and three-quarter-ton you will roll into a farm shop. Where you need to be careful is arm configuration and drive-through width. Asymmetric arms let you open the doors of a sedan; symmetric arms are friendlier to long-wheelbase duallies and vans. If your fleet is a mix — and on a farm it always is — a three-stage front arm and two-stage rear on a symmetric or versymmetric column gives you the widest usable range.

Do not forget the one-ton service truck or the flatbed. If a dually with a utility body is a regular guest, look at 12,000 or 15,000 pounds and check the arm pad reach against the frame width, because capacity means nothing if the pads cannot get under the pinch weld or frame rail. We also ask about tractors and skid steers, and the honest answer is that a car lift is not the right tool for those — mobile column lifts or a good set of jack stands and a loader are. Buy the machine for the vehicles you service weekly, then rent or improvise for the outliers. That single reframe saves people real money.

Power, Air, and the Wiring Nobody Budgets For

Power surprises more buyers than concrete does. Most residential and farm-shop units run a 220-volt single-phase motor drawing roughly 20 to 30 amps at startup, which means a dedicated circuit, correct wire gauge for the run length, and a disconnect within sight. Pole buildings often have long runs from the panel, and voltage drop over 120 feet of undersized wire will make a pump sound weak and run hot. If your shop is fed by a small subpanel already loaded with a welder and a compressor, plan on an electrician visit before delivery, not after.

You also need air if your unit uses air-actuated lock releases, which most two-posts do. A small compressor is fine — the locks need pressure, not volume — but a dead compressor means you are pulling locks by hand with a pry bar, which is miserable and unsafe. And think about where the power unit lives. On a farm, dust and chaff are relentless, and a pump sitting at the base of a column in the path of the shop door gets coated. We like a mounting position that keeps the reservoir breather up out of the worst of it and gives you room to pull the motor without moving the vehicle. These details cost nothing at the planning stage and a lot later.

Half-Shaft and CV Axle Work: What the Lift Actually Needs to Do

CV axle replacement is the job that exposes a poorly chosen lift. You need the suspension hanging free, you need to swing a hub 90 degrees, you need room for a slide hammer and a big pry bar, and you need the vehicle high enough that you are standing, not kneeling. A two-post with 69 to 72 inches of rise puts the subframe at chest height for most people, which is exactly where you want it when you are torquing an axle nut to 180 foot-pounds.

On a farm, half-shaft work is not limited to cars. Front axles on side-by-sides, utility vehicles, and light trucks all take the same abuse from field driveways and frost heave. The advantage of a proper car lift over ramps and stands is that you can spin a wheel freely to check for a bad inner joint, and you can see the boot from underneath before it throws grease all over the inner fender. We tell customers to add a set of stands or drop-lock supports anyway — not because the lift needs them, but because you will occasionally want to load a suspension while it is up, and a jack tray or bottle jack against a control arm is how you do that safely. Plan tool storage within arm’s reach of the bay, because every trip across the shop for a 32mm socket is a trip you take twenty times a day.

Hydraulic Cylinder Seals: The Wear Item Nobody Mentions at Purchase

Here is the part the sales brochure skips. Every hydraulic cylinder on every lift has seals, and seals are consumables. On a farm-shop unit that cycles a few times a week, you might go fifteen or twenty years. In a busy commercial bay, five to eight is common. The failure mode is gradual: the platform or arms settle an inch over an hour, then two inches, then you notice a film of oil weeping down the ram. That weeping is the packing nut or rod seal telling you it is done.

We took a call from a homeowner in the South with a black 7,000-pound four-post, a car stuck in the air, and a cylinder leaking badly enough that he could not get it down safely — and he did not know the brand or model. That is the situation you want to avoid. Photograph the data plate the day your lift is installed, save the serial number in your phone, and know that a rebuild kit for a common cylinder is an inexpensive part compared to a new cylinder or a service call. Most kits include rod seal, wiper, O-rings, and backup rings. The labor is mechanical, not mystical: support the load properly, depressurize, back off the packing nut, extract the rod, replace seals, hone lightly if scored, reassemble. If the rod itself is pitted from years of humid storage, a rebuild will not hold and you replace the cylinder. That is the one honest exception.

Installation, Inspection, and Who You Call at 7 A.M.

The last item on the checklist is the least technical and the most important: who is going to install it, and who will answer the phone when it stops working during harvest. We have picked up a lot of business from folks who installed a unit themselves, discovered it was not level, and then searched for lift repair near them. Self-installation is legal and plenty of people do it well, but the difference between shimming columns to plumb within a sixteenth of an inch and “close enough” shows up as uneven arm lock engagement and cable wear five years later.

Ask any supplier three questions before you buy. First: do you stock seal kits, cables, locks, and pump parts for this exact model, or do you order them from a warehouse two states away? Second: will someone come out to do an annual ANSI/ALI inspection, and what does that cost? Third: if this thing is stuck in the air with a vehicle on it, how fast can you be here?
