Rural farm shop owners around the Quad Cities call us for a car lift for house or farm use more often than any other single customer type. It is almost always the same profile: forty-by-sixty pole building, a couple of tractors, a bunch of trailers, a pickup that needs constant wheel bearing service because it runs gravel every day, and a slab of unknown age and thickness. Before we take an order, we walk every one of these buyers through a pre-purchase checklist. This article is that checklist in written form, so a farm-shop buyer in the Quad Cities can gather the information we need before the first phone call and shave a week off the timeline.

Slab Thickness and Reinforcement

The number-one question for any car lift for house install on a farm shop is the concrete. Two-post lifts need four-and-a-half inches minimum, five is safer, and rebar or fiber mesh is a real plus. Four-post lifts are more forgiving because they distribute load across a wider footprint, but we still want four inches of 3,000 PSI or better. Farm shops built in the 1970s or 1980s often have three-and-a-half-inch slabs with no reinforcement, which is a problem for two-post anchoring, and we have to see that data before we quote.

The fastest way to prove slab thickness is a small core sample at the anchor location. A masonry contractor with a wet-core drill can pull a plug in twenty minutes. If a core is not practical, we will accept the original build spec if you have it, or we can run non-destructive testing on install day and adjust the anchor plan if the pour is thinner than expected. For four-post buyers with an old slab, we sometimes recommend adding wider load plates under the columns to spread the footprint further, which is cheaper than a repour.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Obstructions

A car lift for house install on a farm shop usually has plenty of ceiling but plenty of obstructions. Trusses, purlins, overhead doors, and light fixtures all live in the raise path. On a two-post overhead-cable design we need enough clearance from slab to the underside of the shutoff bar to lift your tallest vehicle to a working height plus the bar itself. For most Quad Cities pole barns with twelve-foot sidewalls, that math works for anything under about seventy-six inches tall.

Overhead door tracks are the sleeper problem. If your shop door opens right where the front columns want to sit, the arms will foul the track when raised. We ask for a photo of the door tracks from inside the shop before we spec column placement. On four-post lifts the ceiling constraint is different because the load platform sits low. What matters instead is whether the lift can extend to its full raised height without hitting a purlin or a light. A five-minute measurement with a tape at the intended column locations solves it.

Wheel Bearing Service and Why Access Matters

Farm-shop customers do a lot of wheel bearing service because gravel roads eat wheel bearings. That job is what pushes a lot of them from jack stands to a car lift for house use in the first place. On a two-post lift, you can pull all four wheels at once and re-pack or replace bearings in about the time it takes to pull one at a time on jack stands. That is the payoff, and it justifies the price of the lift over a couple of pickup seasons.

Bearing service also drives the choice between symmetric and asymmetric arm geometry. For a farm-shop customer whose fleet is mostly pickups and one-tons, we spec symmetric arms because the vehicle center of gravity is close to centered and the swing-arm reach is longer than asymmetric. Symmetric gets a wrench between the frame rail and the tire cleanly. If the buyer’s fleet is car-heavy, asymmetric is better. On a strict farm shop, symmetric wins nine times out of ten.

Site Survey Before the Car Lift for House Order

We do a site survey either in person or by video call before we lock a car lift for house order for a farm shop. In person is better when the shop is within a hundred miles of Ames because we can put a laser on the slab and eyeball the roof structure ourselves. Video works fine when we have a customer who is comfortable walking us around with a phone. Either way, the checklist we run is the same: slab thickness and reinforcement, sidewall height and truss layout, overhead door location and track, electrical panel capacity and phase.

The single thing we ask farm-shop buyers to do before the survey is clear the intended install area. We cannot measure a slab with a Bobcat parked on it or a stack of pallets in the corner. Ten minutes with a broom and a forklift makes the survey twice as fast and lets us walk out with real numbers instead of estimates. Bring the shop insurance policy too if you have it handy, because some carriers have opinions about hydraulic equipment installed in an accessory building.

Electrical and Air for a Car Lift for House

Every two-post lift and most four-post lifts want 220-volt single-phase, which is standard in nearly every farm shop with a welder outlet. We need a dedicated 30-amp circuit within reasonable cable-run distance of the power unit, and the panel needs the amperage to support it. Older 100-amp services can be tight if the shop also runs a compressor and a MIG welder simultaneously, and we will flag that during the survey so you can size a subpanel if needed.

Air is not required for a car lift for house install, but a locking-arm two-post uses air to release the arm restraints, and air is convenient for tire work and impact tools. If you are running a fifteen-gallon pancake compressor, expect it to fall behind on impact-gun work. A sixty-gallon two-stage in the corner solves it and costs less than a decent set of shop stools. Freight and Delivery to Rural Quad Cities Addresses

Freight into rural farm shops is easier than freight into city driveways because the drivers can get a semi within twenty feet of the door. We coordinate with a common carrier who knows the Quad Cities lanes, we call the day before delivery, and we ask the farm-shop owner to have a skid steer or tractor with pallet forks ready to lift the columns off the trailer. If you do not have forks, we bring them on the install trailer for a small surcharge.

We can also crate everything on a single pallet with a hydraulic-tail liftgate truck if the customer prefers a curbside drop, but that adds cost and it makes moving the crated columns from the driveway to the shop harder. Farm shops with room for the truck to back in and forks on-site get the cheapest freight quote, every time. What Happens After the Checklist Clears

Once the checklist clears, the order-to-install timeline is usually three to five weeks depending on the manufacturer and freight lane. We schedule the install day, we ship the crate to your shop or hold it in our Ames yard until we drive over, and we send a two-person crew for a one-day install on standard two-post or four-post configurations. On install day we torque anchors, bleed hydraulics, adjust cables, do the drop test, and hand you a walk-through that covers daily use and maintenance intervals.
