Start With the Slab, Not the Lift

A lot of older farm shops were poured decades ago for tractors and grain trucks to sit on, not to anchor a two-post lift rated for a loaded pickup or a skid steer. Thickness, rebar or mesh, cure age, and any cracking all factor into whether a given lift can be anchored safely where you want it.
We ask for slab thickness and age before we ever talk lift models. In a lot of cases a 4-post lift is the better call for a farm shop specifically because it distributes weight across ramps and runways instead of concentrating it at four small anchor points, which matters on a slab that’s seen forty years of loaders and augers rolling across it. For shops with limited overhead, a low-rise scissor or a mid-rise lift often makes more sense than a tall two-post, since it lifts a vehicle to comfortable working height without needing 16-plus feet of clearance. If the shop was built or expanded with lift height in mind, a two-post or 4-post gives full underside access for driveline, transmission, and undercarriage work that’s common on farm trucks and equipment. Either way, this gets settled before we order anything — nobody wants a lift crated up in the shop that won’t clear the header.
Power: Single-Phase Reality on Most Farms
Most farm shops run on single-phase power, and that’s fine — the majority of lifts we install run on single-phase 220V without issue. Where farm shop lift installation gets tricky is when a shop’s electrical panel is already loaded up with grain dryers, augers, welders, and shop heaters, and there isn’t a clean 220V circuit left to run to the lift location. Distance from the panel to the lift location also matters more in a farm shop than in a typical garage, since these buildings tend to be larger and lifts often go at the far end near the equipment doors. Voltage drop over a long run can affect motor performance, so wire gauge needs to match the run length, not just the amperage. We factor this into every quote rather than leaving it as a surprise line item once the electrician shows up.

The right lift for a farm shop depends entirely on what rolls through the door. A shop that mostly services pickups, half-tons, and light trailers can run comfortably on a mid-capacity two-post or 4-post. A shop that also handles heavier trucks, skid steers being serviced on ramps, or grain trucks needs to size up to a heavier-duty capacity from the start — undersizing a lift for farm equipment is one of the most common mistakes we see, and it’s not something you fix later without buying a new lift.

Farm shops often double as parts storage, welding bays, and tool staging areas, which means lift placement has to account for more than just the vehicle footprint. We walk every shop before installation to make sure there’s enough swing room for doors to open fully, enough clearance for a jack to roll under a raised vehicle, and enough distance from workbenches or storage racks that the lift doesn’t box in daily operations.
