A car lift changes how you take care of vehicles, and nobody learns that faster than a collector who finally gets one bolted to the floor. Within a month he told us he’d never crawl under a car again. Within eleven months he called us about a cylinder that was weeping fluid down the post. Month One: Sizing the Lift to a 30×40 Shop
The conversation started the way most collector conversations start — a pole building, concrete floors, and twelve-foot sidewalls. That’s a common central Iowa shop spec, and it’s workable, but twelve feet is the number that decides everything. A drive-on 4-post with a car stored on top and a second vehicle underneath needs roughly 84 to 90 inches of clearance below the runways to be genuinely useful, plus the height of the vehicle on top, plus a few inches of headroom for the crossbar. On a twelve-foot wall you can store a sedan over a sedan without drama. Store a lifted truck over anything and the math falls apart fast.
We measured the slab thickness too, because that’s the part people skip. Most pole-barn pours in this area come in at four inches with fiber or light mesh, which is adequate for a 7,000 to 9,000 lb 4-post because the load spreads across four base plates rather than concentrating on two. A 2-post would have meant core samples and possibly footings. He wanted storage anyway, so the decision made itself. We also talked about where the power unit would sit relative to his air lines and where the drip trays would go, because once the vehicle on top starts leaking on the vehicle underneath, nobody enjoys the shop anymore. Small details, decided in an afternoon, that made the next eleven months uneventful.
Install Day and the Things We Changed On Site
Install day on a 4-post is usually a half-day job for two people, and this one was — but not without adjustments. His overhead door track ran lower than the drawings suggested, so we rotated the whole assembly ninety degrees from his original plan and set it along the long wall instead. That put the power unit on the wrong side of his outlet, which meant a short run of conduit and a new receptacle. This is normal. Nearly every install we do involves at least one change made with the pieces sitting on the floor, and it’s why we don’t quote installs sight-unseen when we can help it.
Leveling took the longest. A drive-on unit has to sit dead level across both runways or the vehicle rolls when you release the brake, and the slab had about three-eighths of an inch of fall toward the door — normal for a building designed to drain. Steel shims under two of the base plates fixed it. We bled the hydraulic system, cycled it a dozen times empty, then loaded his heaviest vehicle and cycled it again while watching every fitting. Then we walked him through the locks: how they sound engaging, why you always lower onto locks before going underneath, and why the lock release is a two-hand operation on purpose. He’d been ready to start using it the second we left, so we spent an extra twenty minutes on that part.
Oil Changes and Fluid Service, Reimagined
The whole reason he bought the equipment was fluid service. Five vehicles, a couple of them driven only in summer, means a lot of oil changes that come due by calendar rather than mileage — and a lot of transmission and differential fluid that gets ignored because reaching it on jack stands is miserable. At full height on a 4-post you’re standing upright under the drain plug with a light and a wrench, and the job goes from forty-five minutes of contortion to fifteen minutes of actual work.
He bought a low-profile drain pan that rolls between the runways and a rolling seat he never uses anymore. The real change was frequency: he started doing the services he’d been skipping. Brake fluid flushes, coolant drain-and-fills, rear differential fluid on the older truck that hadn’t been touched since it left the dealer. That’s the part collectors underestimate about a car lift — it doesn’t just make the same jobs easier, it makes you willing to do more of them. Meanwhile, drive-on runways mean the suspension stays loaded, which is exactly what you want for fluid work but not what you want for anything involving the wheels. He bought a pair of rolling bridge jacks in month four for brake and tire work, and those turned the setup into something close to a full service bay. What Storage Actually Requires From a Car Lift
Storage duty is different from service duty, and it wears equipment differently. A service lift cycles up and down ten times a day and spends most of its life at rest on the ground. A storage lift goes up in October and comes down in April, sitting under continuous load for months on mechanical locks. That’s fine — locks are designed for it — but it changes what fails first. The hydraulic system holds pressure only briefly during the raise, so pump wear is low. Cables, however, sit under static tension for months at a time, and the cylinder seals sit compressed in one position long enough to take a set.
We told him to cycle the unit fully at least once a month even during storage season, and to lower it completely a couple times a winter so the cables relax and the seals move. He did, mostly. We also had him check cable tension every few months by hand — all four cables should feel equally taut, and equalization drifting out is the earliest warning that something needs attention. Chalk marks on the posts at the four corners of the platform give you a dead-simple visual reference; if one corner starts sitting lower than the others over a season, you’ve found a problem before it becomes a failure. That kind of five-minute habit is worth more than any annual inspection, and it’s free.
Month Eleven: The Cylinder Started Weeping
The call came in late winter. He’d noticed a thin film of hydraulic fluid on the post below the cylinder, and a small stain on the concrete. The unit still lifted, still held, but the reservoir level was creeping down. This is the single most common hydraulic complaint we get on a car lift of any configuration, and it’s almost always the rod seal.
Here’s what’s happening: the piston rod extends and retracts through a gland at the top of the cylinder, and that gland holds a rod seal, a wiper, and usually a backup ring. The wiper keeps dirt out. When it hardens or gets nicked by a fleck of grit, dirt gets past it and scores the rod, and once the rod is scored, the rod seal has no chance. Fluid weeps out on every stroke. We see it earlier on units in dusty shops, on units that sat outdoors before installation, and on units where somebody wiped the rod with a shop rag full of grinding dust. In his case the rod had two faint vertical scratches — enough to leak, not enough to condemn the cylinder. That’s the good outcome, and it’s why we always want to inspect the rod before ordering anything. A leaking cylinder is a fifteen-minute diagnosis and either a cheap fix or an expensive one depending entirely on the condition of that chrome surface.
Seal Kits vs. Full Cylinder Replacement
We had two paths. A rebuild kit — rod seal, wiper, O-rings, backup rings, sometimes a new gland nut — is the inexpensive route, and on a cylinder with a clean rod and a clean bore it’s the right call. Rebuilding takes an hour or two: support the platform on stands or locks, relieve pressure, disconnect and cap the line, pull the cylinder, unthread the gland, replace the seals, reassemble with clean fluid and no grit anywhere near the work. The seals themselves are inexpensive. The labor and the cleanliness are what matter.
Full replacement makes sense when the rod is deeply scored, pitted from rust, or bent, or when the bore is scratched. At that point new seals will fail again in months and you’ve spent the labor twice. What We’d Tell the Next First-Year Owner
Twelve months in, the honest summary is that the equipment did everything he wanted and needed one repair that was entirely predictable. That’s a normal first year. The things that mattered most weren’t the brand or the capacity — they were slab thickness, ceiling height, and whether he cycled it during storage season. The things that didn’t matter at all were the features he agonized over before buying.
If you’re about to buy your first car lift, do three things. Measure your ceiling to the lowest obstruction, not the peak, and write that number down. Find out what your slab actually is — thickness, reinforcement, and whether there’s a control joint where you want to anchor. And budget a couple hundred dollars a year for wear parts, because cables, seals, and lock components are consumables on a machine that holds thousands of pounds overhead.
