Last fall an overlanding builder in West Des Moines called us because his four-post wouldn’t hold height overnight, and there was a lifted Tacoma sitting on it with the transmission pan already dropped. He builds and services expedition rigs out of a converted pole building — roof racks, drawer systems, regeared axles, and a steady stream of transmission and transfer-case work. His car lift had been fine for three years and then started sagging an inch or two per hour, which turns a two-day trans job into a hazard. What we found, what we replaced, and how we reconfigured his bay is a decent roadmap for anybody doing driveline work on a lift that’s starting to show its age.

The Symptom: Slow Sag With a Transmission Half Out

Drift-down is the diagnostic starting point, and it narrows fast. If a lift settles with the locks disengaged but holds solid on the locks, you have an internal leak — cylinder seals, a bad check valve at the power unit, or a lowering valve that isn’t seating. If it settles even on the locks, you have a mechanical problem and you stop working immediately. His unit held on the locks, which is the good news, but he’d been running it off the locks between height changes because he was chasing shift-linkage clearance, and that’s how you end up with a driveline hanging on a jack stand at an angle nobody likes.

We got there and watched it for twenty minutes. Roughly an inch and a half of drop with the ram loaded, no visible puddle under the power unit, and a faint wet film down the cylinder body under the runway. That pattern — no external puddle at the pump, weeping at the rod end — points at rod seals rather than a valve. Fluid was also dark and smelled cooked, which happens when a unit runs low and the pump cavitates. Before we touched a wrench we cribbed the vehicle, put the lift on its lowest available lock, and told him to pull the trans the rest of the way onto a table instead of leaving it swinging. Diagnosing under load is fine; working under a suspect lift is not.

Teardown: What Hydraulic Cylinder Seals Actually Fail

A lift cylinder is a simple assembly with a few consumable parts. There’s a rod seal that keeps fluid inside, a wiper or dust seal that keeps grit out, a piston seal or cup that separates the pressure side from the return side, an O-ring at the gland, and a bearing or bushing that keeps the rod centered. On a single-acting lift cylinder — which is what most four-post and two-post lifts use — the piston seal is the one that causes drift-down, because when it’s worn, fluid bypasses the piston and the ram sinks under load even with the valve closed.

His was a textbook case. The wiper seal had hardened and cracked, which let three years of pole-building dust and blast media into the bore. That grit scored the rod and chewed the rod seal, and the abrasive fluid that resulted wore the piston cup edge until it stopped sealing. That’s the usual failure chain: dust seal first, then everything downstream. It’s also why a leaking lift almost never comes back to life with a top-off of fluid. On teardown we measured the bore for scoring. Light honing marks are acceptable; deep vertical scratches mean the bore will cut new seals in a few months and you’re better off replacing the cylinder outright. In this case the bore was serviceable, the rod had one scored band we could polish, and a rebuild kit made sense. Roughly half the cylinders we open on Iowa lifts are rebuildable and half get replaced — it depends entirely on how long the owner ran it after the first drips.

The Rebuild: Kit, Fluid, and Getting Air Out

Rebuild kits are brand and bore specific. We matched his by the cylinder’s stamped part number and bore diameter, pulled a kit from stock, and had the unit back together the same afternoon. The order of operations matters more than the parts: clean everything in solvent, inspect the gland threads, install the piston seal with the lip facing pressure, lubricate the rod seal with clean fluid before it goes over the rod, and torque the gland to spec instead of guessing with a pipe wrench. A cocked gland is the most common reason a fresh rebuild leaks within a week.

Fluid choice trips people up. Most lift manufacturers call for AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or in some cases ATF — check your manual, because using the wrong viscosity makes a unit sluggish in an unheated Iowa shop in January and mushy in August. We flushed his reservoir, replaced the suction screen, and filled with fresh AW-32. Then we bled it: raise to full height, lower fully, repeat five or six times with the reservoir cap loose, topping off between cycles until the ram moves smoothly with no shudder. Trapped air is why a rebuilt cylinder sometimes feels jerky on the first lift and fine on the fifth. When we finished, drift-down over an hour with a loaded vehicle was zero. We also handed him a spare wiper seal and told him to swap it the next time it looked crusty, which costs almost nothing and prevents the whole chain from starting over.

Why Transmission Work Is Hard on a Car Lift

Driveline work punishes a lift in ways brake jobs don’t. You cycle the height constantly — up to unbolt crossmembers, down to line up a jack, up again to clear the tunnel — and every cycle puts the seals through another stroke. You load and unload the lift asymmetrically as several hundred pounds of transmission comes off the vehicle and goes onto a jack. And you leave the car in the air for a long time, sometimes days, waiting on a torque converter or a set of solenoids.

All of that argues for two habits. First, always rest on the mechanical locks, not on hydraulic pressure, any time you’re not actively moving the lift. Locks are steel; seals are rubber. Second, respect the load center. On an overlanding rig with a rear bumper, a swing-out tire carrier, and a drawer system full of tools, the weight distribution is nothing like the factory spec, and pulling a transmission shifts it further rearward. We’ve seen guys get away with it for years and then have a bad afternoon. Third — and this one is specific to trans work — get a proper transmission jack rated for the weight. Using a floor jack with a chunk of two-by-four is how oil pans get bent and how somebody’s hand ends up where it shouldn’t be. If you’re doing this weekly, a telescoping trans jack pays for itself in the first month.

Reconfiguring the Bay: Runways, Jacks, and Access

Once the hydraulics were sorted we spent an hour on layout, because half his frustration wasn’t the lift at all. He had a four-post with no rolling jacks, which meant every wheels-free task involved a bottle jack balanced on a runway. We added a rolling jack bridge — a pair of jacks that ride the runways and lift the axles or frame clear of the deck — which turned the same unit into something that handles suspension and driveline work without a fight.

We also moved the lift. It had been set with the drive-on end facing the small overhead door, which forced a three-point turn every time a long-wheelbase rig came in. Repositioning it eight feet and rotating the approach gave him a straight shot from the big door, plus room to open a rear hatch at full height. For transmission service specifically we recommended an air drop near the driver’s-side column, a work light on a retractable reel over the tunnel area, and a low bench for holding valve bodies. None of that is exotic; it’s just the difference between a bay you fight and a bay that works. Parts Support Beats Brand Loyalty on an Older Car Lift

The single most useful thing about this job was that we could identify the parts. A surprising number of the urgent calls we take are from owners who don’t know what they own — one out-of-state caller had a car stuck in the air on a black four-post rated at 7,000 pounds and couldn’t name the brand or model. That makes everything slower. So the first thing we tell every owner: photograph the serial tag and the power unit label, save it somewhere you can find it from your phone, and write the model number inside the electrical box cover with a paint pen.
