The math is different, the usage pattern is different, and the financing conversation is different too. We install and service lifts across Iowa, Nebraska, and the surrounding states, and over the years we have walked a lot of collectors from the first phone call through install day, through their first alignment job, and out to that first annual service visit. What a Collector Actually Needs From a Car Lift
The collector we are describing here — a composite of several customers, since we do not publish names — had a 30×40 pole building with twelve-foot sidewalls and a four-inch slab. Five vehicles, two of them driven regularly and three that come out on weekends when the weather cooperates. His stated goal was simple: stack two cars in one bay and still be able to do his own maintenance. That combination narrows the field fast. Storage means four posts. Maintenance means he wants wheels-free access at least some of the time, which means rolling jacks. And alignment work, which he mentioned almost as an afterthought, means the runways need to be flat and the deck needs slip plates and turnplate pockets.
Capacity was the next question. He kept saying seven thousand pounds because that is the number he had seen online, and for passenger vehicles that number is honest. But we walked him through what happens when he buys a three-quarter-ton pickup in two years, because collectors always buy something heavier eventually. Going up to a 9,000 or 12,000 lb four-post costs a bit more up front and almost nothing in floor space. That single decision is the one we see people regret most often. Undersizing a lift to save a few hundred dollars is a false economy when the replacement cost is the entire unit plus a second install. We told him to buy the capacity he will need in five years, not the capacity he needs on delivery day.
Sizing the Building Before the Order Goes In
Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you do the arithmetic. A four-post storage lift with a car on the runways needs the height of the vehicle on top, plus the runway thickness, plus the vehicle underneath, plus a few inches of daylight so nobody scrapes a roof. Two mid-size sedans stack comfortably under twelve feet. A lifted pickup on top of an SUV does not. We ask for the actual height of the tallest vehicle in the collection, not a guess, because the difference between a car and a crossover is often the difference between the top locking position working and not working.
Slab thickness matters just as much. Four-post units distribute load across four base plates and are far more forgiving than two-post columns, but we still want to see a minimum of four inches of concrete at 3,000 psi with reasonable cure time behind it. On the Nebraska side of the river we run into a lot of newer pole buildings with beautiful slabs and no rebar documentation, so we core-check or at minimum drill a test hole before install day. We also look at door swing, overhead lighting, and where the power drop lands. A 220V single-phase circuit within reach of the power unit saves an electrician trip. None of this is exciting, but every one of these details has delayed somebody’s install at some point, and we would rather find them on the phone than in the driveway with a trailer.
Financing Terms and the Payment Schedule
Most collectors are not financing because they have to. They are financing because the money is better used elsewhere for a season. The programs we have offered over the years have included twelve months no interest with no payment due for the first ninety days, and that structure works well for someone who is also paying for concrete, electrical, or a building addition in the same quarter. You take delivery, you get through the winter, and the first payment lands after the expensive part of the project is behind you.
What we tell people to watch is what happens at month thirteen. Deferred-interest promotions are genuinely free money if the balance is cleared inside the window, and genuinely expensive if it is not, because the interest is often calculated retroactively from day one. So the real planning question is not the monthly payment, it is whether the full balance can be cleared before the promotional period closes. We ask customers to divide the total by ten rather than twelve, which builds in a two-month cushion for a bad month. Beyond the promo programs, standard equipment financing over thirty-six to sixty months exists too, and for a collector who wants the payment to be small and permanent that is sometimes the better fit. We are not a bank and we do not pretend to be one, but we have watched enough of these deals go through that we will tell you honestly which structure fits your situation. Install Day on the Iowa-Nebraska Border
A four-post install in a clean, empty pole building is one of the more pleasant jobs in this trade. Two of our people, a morning, and the unit is standing. The truck arrives with the posts, the crossbeams, the runways, and a pallet of hardware. We square the base positions to the building rather than to the slab joints, because slab joints are almost never where you want them and a lift squared to a control joint looks crooked in a building forever. Then we set posts, install crossbeams, run the cables, hang the power unit, and start the leveling process.
Leveling is where DIY installs go wrong. We took a call from an owner in Indiana who had put his own unit in and could not get the runways to sit level; he found us searching for lift repair and we ended up walking him through cable equalization over the phone. On a four-post, the four lifting cables all have to be tensioned so the runways rise together, and a quarter turn on one adjuster nut changes the whole geometry. Getting that right takes a feel for it. Once it is level, we cycle the unit ten or fifteen times unloaded, then load-test it, check every lock engagement, verify the slack-cable safety trips, and hand over the manual. Then we spend twenty minutes teaching the owner how to use the locks properly, because more people get hurt trusting hydraulics than trusting steel.
Doing Alignment Work at Home
Alignment was the surprise upgrade for this customer. He initially wanted a plain storage unit and talked himself into an alignment-ready deck about a week before the order went in, and a year later he says it was the best money he spent. An alignment-capable four-post has recessed pockets for front turnplates and rear slip plates built into the runways, plus a flatness tolerance the manufacturer actually certifies. You cannot reliably add that to a storage-only deck later.
What he does with it is not full shop-grade work. He is not running a Hunter rack in a pole building. But with a set of turnplates, a quality string setup or a consumer-grade camera system, and a level deck, he can set toe and camber on the collection himself and check it after every suspension change. For a guy who swaps springs, changes bushings, and puts different wheels on a car twice a year, that capability pays for itself in the first three visits he does not make to a shop. The other thing an alignment deck gets you is confidence in the flatness of the runways generally, which matters for brake work, exhaust work, and anything else where a twisted deck introduces error. The First Six Months of Real Use
Nothing dramatic happens in the first six months of owning a car lift, and that is the point. The pattern we see with collectors is a burst of enthusiasm — everything gets lifted, inspected, and photographed — followed by settling into a rhythm of a couple of cycles a week. During that first stretch, the things worth watching are cable stretch and hydraulic seepage. New cables stretch a little as they seat. It is normal, it is expected, and it means the runways drift slightly out of level after the first month or two. A quick re-equalization fixes it.
Hydraulic weeping around fittings is also common early on and usually just means a fitting needs another quarter turn. What is not normal is a cylinder that leaks past the seals, and that is the failure mode we get emergency calls about. We once took a call from Florida from a homeowner with a vehicle stuck in the air on a black four-post 7,000 lb unit — he did not know the brand or model — because the cylinder was leaking down and he could not safely lower the car. That is a bad afternoon. The lesson is not that four-post units are dangerous; it is that the mechanical locks exist for exactly that reason and should be engaged any time a vehicle is parked in the air. The First Annual Service and What It Costs
At the twelve-month mark we come back out. The annual service on a four-post storage unit is short: inspect all four cables end to end for broken strands, corrosion, and flat spots; check sheave wear; verify cable tension and re-equalize; test every lock and the slack-cable safeties; check fluid level and top off; inspect the hoses and fittings; and look at the base plates and anchors for movement. On an alignment deck we also re-verify flatness. The whole visit runs an hour or two on a healthy unit.
Cost-wise, a routine annual inspection on a residential four-post is in the low hundreds for most of our service area, with travel factored in for the longer runs out west toward the border. Cables, when they eventually need replacing, are the biggest recurring parts expense — figure a set every eight to twelve years on a home unit depending on cycle count and humidity, sooner in an unheated building where condensation is constant. We stock cables for every major brand and can usually cross-reference by measuring the old one if the model tag has faded off, which happens more than you would think.
