Picking a car lift for a municipal fleet shop is a different exercise than picking one for a hobby garage, and we got a reminder of that last spring when a public works director in northern Missouri called us about replacing two worn-out columns in a building with low steel and a very tight budget cycle. His techs were pulling wheel bearings on half-ton pickups and a couple of patrol cars every month, and the old equipment fought them the entire time. The question on the table was overhead versus baseplate. We drove down, measured, and walked the crew through the tradeoffs honestly. What Overhead and Baseplate Actually Mean
Both designs are two-post units, and both raise a vehicle by the frame. The difference is where the equalization cables and hydraulic hose run. An overhead model routes them through a crossbeam that bridges the tops of the columns, which usually carries the shutoff bar that stops the lift before a tall vehicle contacts the ceiling. A baseplate model routes everything through a low channel bolted to the floor between the posts, leaving the space above the vehicle completely open.
That single routing decision drives almost everything else. Overhead units keep the floor clean, which matters when techs are rolling transmission jacks and parts carts across the bay all day. Baseplate units give you unlimited height for a raised box truck or a lifted pickup, but you are stepping over a plate every time you walk through. In the northern Missouri shop, the building had roughly eleven feet of clear steel with conduit hanging lower in spots. That measurement did most of the deciding for us. A twelve-foot overhead crossbeam simply was not going to fit without relocating electrical, and the city was not funding that. Baseplate it was. We still walked the crew through what they were giving up, because a lift you regret in six months is not a bargain.
Ceiling Height Is the First Measurement, Not the Last
We ask for three numbers before we quote anything: clear height to the lowest obstruction, column-to-column floor width, and slab thickness. Shops get burned when they measure to the peak of the roof and forget the sprinkler heads, the unit heater, the air lines, or the pull-down door track. On a two-post overhead configuration you need enough room for the crossbeam plus the tallest vehicle you plan to raise, plus a little margin so the shutoff bar is a backup instead of a daily bumper.
In this Missouri building, the door track was the real ceiling. It sat at about ten feet ten inches, and it ran directly over where the bay wanted to go. A baseplate car lift solves that problem cleanly because nothing spans the top. Their tallest regular vehicle was a service body pickup with a light bar, and even fully raised for wheel bearing work it cleared the track with room left over. We also measured the slab. Four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete is the floor for most 10,000 lb models, and anything thinner or cracked means cutting and pouring pads. Their slab came back at five and a half inches, good news that saved a few thousand dollars and a week of downtime. Measure first. Every time.
Wheel Bearing Work Changes What You Need
Wheel bearing service is not gentle work. Techs are hanging on a breaker bar, running an impact at full torque, and sometimes swinging a slide hammer at a hub that has been seized for eleven Missouri winters. All of that force goes sideways into the arms and columns. A fleet shop doing bearings weekly will notice arm slop and pad wear years before a general repair shop will.
That pushed us toward a heavier arm set and asymmetric arms with a proper restraint system rather than the lightest thing that met the capacity number. We also specified truck adapters up front, because reaching a frame pinch weld on a three-quarter-ton with stacked blocks is how people get hurt. The other detail that matters for bearing work is arm reach. Short front arms that will not swing under a long-nose pickup force techs into bad lift points, and a bad lift point on a vehicle that is about to get hammered on is the setup for a drop. Safety Systems You Should Not Compromise On
Every reputable two-post has mechanical locks in the columns, a hydraulic velocity fuse, and an equalization cable system. Those are not optional and they are not marketing. The locks are what hold the vehicle. Hydraulics only raise it. If your techs are working under a vehicle that is resting on hydraulic pressure instead of seated locks, you have a bad habit that will eventually cost somebody.
We train every fleet crew we install for on the same three-step routine: raise past the lock you want, lower onto it, listen for both sides to seat. Then shake the vehicle at the bumper before anyone goes under. On the northern Missouri install, one tech admitted he had never been shown the lower-onto-locks step at his previous employer. That is common and it is exactly why we do a hands-on walkthrough at handoff rather than leaving a manual on the bench. We also covered ALI certification, the annual inspection requirement, and what a frayed equalization cable looks like before it lets go. Cables stretch and corrode, especially in road-salt country, and a baseplate design puts them right where slush and brine collect. We told them to expect cable inspection every six months and replacement somewhere in the five-to-eight-year window depending on use. Budget for it now instead of discovering it during a failure.
Installation Realities in a Working Municipal Building
Municipal shops are rarely empty. This one ran plow trucks and ambulances out of the same building, so we could not shut the place down for three days. We scheduled the anchor drilling for a Friday afternoon, let the epoxy cure over the weekend, and came back Monday to set columns, run hydraulics, and commission. The bay was in service by Monday afternoon.
Electrical is the other coordination item people forget. Most two-post power units are single-phase 220V, though some fleet shops already have three-phase available and are better off using it. Either way, a licensed electrician needs a dedicated circuit and a disconnect within sight of the unit. We can tell you exactly what the motor needs, but we do not run the wire, and any installer who tells you they will handle the electrical as an afterthought is cutting a corner. Anchor torque matters too. Every anchor gets torqued to spec and checked again after the first week of use, because concrete relaxes. We come back for that check on installs within our territory. If you are further out, we walk your maintenance lead through it on the phone with a torque wrench in hand. That follow-up is a small thing that prevents a very large problem later on.
Cost, Lifecycle, and the Parts Pipeline Behind Your Car Lift
Purchase price is the number that goes in the budget request, but it is not the number that determines what the equipment costs the city over fifteen years. A quality two-post from Rotary or Challenger typically lands in the mid four figures for a 10,000 lb unit, with heavier capacities and specialty arm packages climbing from there. Installation, anchors, and electrical add on top. Cheap imported units can undercut that by a wide margin, and we have pulled plenty of them out.
The real difference shows up when something breaks. When a bargain unit needs a cylinder seal kit or a lock dog spring, you often cannot get the part at all, because the importer changed suppliers and nobody stocks the old geometry. We field calls constantly from people who bought an off-brand car lift and now cannot identify it well enough to order a component. One recent caller in Florida had a vehicle stuck in the air on a leaking cylinder and could not tell us the brand or model of the black four-post it was sitting on. That is a bad afternoon. Making the Call for Your Own Shop
If your building has twelve feet or more of genuinely clear height and you want an unobstructed floor, go overhead. It is the cleaner daily experience, the shutoff bar is a real safety benefit, and most techs prefer it. If your ceiling is under about eleven and a half feet, or you regularly raise tall vehicles that would kiss a crossbeam, go baseplate and accept the floor channel. Neither design is inherently safer. Both meet the same standards when installed correctly and maintained on schedule.
What actually determines whether you are happy in year seven is the install quality, the concrete, and whether you can get parts. Those are the three things we control for our customers.
