Start With The Basics Before You Chase Pressure

If your symptom is a quick initial drop followed by stability, suspect air before you suspect seals or valves.

Bleeding a lift properly means cycling it through several full up-and-down strokes, letting fluid settle in the reservoir between cycles, and checking the fluid level each time since it will drop as air works its way out. This is standard on any fresh install or after a hose replacement, and skipping it is one of the most common reasons a brand-new hose job still shows pressure trouble. If you’re still fighting this after several cycles, move on to checking the hose itself for a pinhole or a bad crimp fitting.

Hydraulic Hose And Fitting Wear

Rubber hydraulic hose degrades from the inside long before it fails visibly on the outside. Iowa’s temperature swings between summer heat and winter cold are hard on hose material, and we replace more hose in this climate than shops in milder states. A hose that’s starting to fail internally can let pressure bleed slowly without ever showing a wet spot, which sends a lot of shop owners down the wrong troubleshooting path.

If your lift is more than eight or ten years old and still running its original hose, that’s worth replacing proactively even if you haven’t pinned down the exact leak yet. Pair new hose with new crimp fittings rather than reusing old ones, and make sure routing avoids sharp bends or contact with moving arms. A properly routed, correctly rated hose set solves more mystery pressure issues than almost anything else we install.

Power Unit Internal Wear

When fluid, fittings, valves, and hose all check out clean, the power unit itself deserves a look. Pump wear, a worn relief valve, or internal cross-leakage inside the manifold can all cause slow pressure loss that’s hard to isolate without disassembly. This is less common than the issues above, but on lifts running fifteen-plus years, it does happen, especially if the unit has run low on fluid for extended periods in the past.

A rebuilt or replacement power unit is a bigger investment than a seal kit or a valve, so we always rule out every cheaper cause first. If you’ve worked through fluid, fittings, cylinder seals, valves, air, and hose without finding the source, that’s the point where we recommend having a technician pull the manifold and pressure-test each valve individually rather than guessing further on your own.
