Choosing a lift for a small shop is a completely different problem than speccing equipment for a ten-bay dealership, and we say that as the crew who drives out to both. Most of the shops we install for around central Iowa are two or three bays in a building that was put up decades ago for something else entirely — a grain implement dealer, a fleet garage, an old body shop with a ceiling that stops a foot shorter than you’d like. In those buildings the right answer is almost never “whatever the catalog says is most popular.” It’s whatever fits your ceiling, your slab, your power, and the work that actually pays your bills. Here’s how we walk owners through it.

Start With the Tape Measure, Not the Catalog
Every conversation we have about choosing a lift for a small shop starts with three numbers: clear ceiling height, bay width between obstructions, and slab thickness. Clear ceiling height means the lowest thing over the lift — not the peak of the roof. Sprinkler heads, a gas heater hanging in the middle of the bay, conduit, a truss web, the open overhead door panels stacked against the ceiling. We’ve had shops swear they had fourteen feet and measure out at eleven-two once the door tracks were accounted for. That single number rules more equipment in or out than anything else.
Bay width matters just as much and gets ignored more often. A two-post lift needs room for the columns plus room for the arms to swing plus room for a door to open on both sides of the vehicle. In a 12-foot bay you can physically bolt a lift down, but you’ll be sucking in your gut every time you get a customer’s Suburban out. Fourteen to sixteen feet of usable width is where a two-post bay stops being miserable. Slab thickness is the third leg: most two-post lifts want four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, and a lot of older Iowa shop floors are three-and-a-half inches of unknown mix poured over dirt. We’d rather core-test and cut a proper pad than watch anchors pull.
Two-Post Still Wins Most Small-Shop Bays
If your work is brakes, suspension, exhaust, tires, and general repair, a two-post is almost always the right call — it gives you total wheels-free access and the smallest footprint per usable bay. The question is which two-post. Asymmetric arms let you set the vehicle back so the doors clear the columns, which is the version we recommend for shops working mostly cars and light SUVs. Symmetric handles longer, heavier trucks better because the weight sits centered between the columns. Plenty of the models we sell are configurable enough to do both reasonably well.
Then there’s clearfloor versus baseplate, which is the ceiling-height question again in different clothes. Clearfloor runs the equalization cables and hose over the top, giving you a completely flat floor to roll a jack or a transmission across — but it needs the overhead beam clearance. Baseplate runs everything through a low plate at floor level, so it works under a low ceiling, at the cost of a small bump to roll over. In a building with eleven-foot trusses, baseplate is often the only honest option. We install a lot of them. When we’re on the phone about choosing a lift for a small shop with a low roof, that’s usually where the conversation lands, and nobody has ever regretted it once they were lifting cars instead of admiring an unbolted lift in the corner.
When a Four-Post or Scissor Makes More Sense
Not every small shop should buy a two-post. If most of what you do is alignments, quick lube, detail, or storing project vehicles between jobs, a four-post is the better tool. Drive-on convenience means less time positioning, and the runways carry weight without touching frame pinch welds — helpful on unibody cars, EVs with battery trays, and anything with underbody panels you don’t want to fight. The tradeoff is footprint and wheels-free access; you’ll need rolling jack trays to get wheels off, and a four-post eats more floor than a two-post does.
Mid-rise scissor lifts are the underrated answer for tight buildings. If you’re a tire and brake shop in a strip-mall bay with a nine-foot ceiling, a mid-rise gets a car to comfortable working height, tucks away when you’re done, and doesn’t require you to reframe your roof. Low-rise pad lifts do the same for wheel and tire work. We also spec full-rise scissors for shops that want a second lift in a bay that can’t take another pair of columns. The honest version of choosing a lift for a small shop is admitting that your building may have already made the decision for you — the good news is that every one of these categories has capable equipment behind it. Capacity: Buy for the Worst Vehicle, Not the Average One
Shop owners tend to size capacity around what rolls in on a normal Tuesday. We’d rather you size it around the F-250 that shows up in November needing a fuel pump. A 10,000 lb two-post covers nearly all light-duty passenger work with margin. Step to 12,000 lb and you comfortably cover three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups, cargo vans, and the increasingly heavy crossovers and EVs coming through the door. Fifteen thousand and up starts being a genuine light-truck lift.
Capacity isn’t only about the total number, either — it’s about how that load sits. A dually with a service body puts far more weight on the rear arms than the front. Arm reach and adapter height matter as much as the rating plate: if your adapters won’t reach a truck’s frame lift points without stacking three pucks, you have the wrong arm configuration regardless of the sticker. And remember that a lift rated for 12,000 lb assumes even distribution and correct pickup points. We’ve seen more problems from bad load placement than from genuinely overloaded lifts. Power, Air, and the Stuff Nobody Budgets For
The lift is the line item people plan for. The infrastructure around it is the surprise. Most commercial two-post lifts run a 208-230V single-phase motor, which means a dedicated 30-amp circuit and, in a lot of older buildings, a panel that’s already full. Three-phase is available and efficient if you have it. We’ve had installs where the electrical work approached a meaningful fraction of the lift cost — better to know that in week one than the morning of delivery.
Air matters too, if you’re running an air-release safety lock system; you’ll want a shop air line reaching the columns. Then there’s concrete. If your slab doesn’t pass, cutting and pouring proper footings is a real project involving saw work, spoil removal, and cure time before we can anchor. Add ceiling clearance fixes — relocating a heater, moving a sprinkler head, rerouting conduit — and you can see why we push for a site visit or at least detailed photos and measurements before anyone writes a purchase order. Service, Parts, and Buying Something You Can Keep Running
A lift is a fifteen-to-twenty-five-year asset if you buy well and maintain it. That makes parts availability a spec, not an afterthought. We stock cables, cylinders, hoses, lock assemblies, arm restraints, adapters, and power units for every major brand, and we service what we sell. There’s a reason we lean on Rotary and Challenger for commercial work: the parts are there in ten years, and the engineering documentation is there when a technician needs it at seven in the morning.
What we’d steer a small shop away from is the no-name import that arrives with a photocopied manual and no clear source for a replacement equalization cable. We get those calls — someone bought a bargain lift five years ago and now can’t identify the cable end fitting, let alone order one. Add ALI certification to your checklist while you’re at it; it’s third-party verification that the equipment met a real load and safety standard, and in some jurisdictions it matters for inspections and insurance. Between capacity, clearance, and long-term serviceability, choosing a lift for a small shop is mostly an exercise in avoiding the decisions that get expensive later.

List the five heaviest and five most awkward vehicles you service. Then, and only then, look at models.
